Phosphonium-based polythiophene conjugated polyelectrolytes with different surfactant counterions: thermal properties, self-assembly and photovoltaic performances
© 2020 Society of Industrial Chemistry Phosphonium-based polythiophene conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with three different counterions (dodecylsulfate, octylsulfate and perfluorooctane sulfonate) are synthesized to determine how the nature of the counterion affects the thermal properties, the self-assembly in thin films and the performance as the cathode interfacial layer in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The counterion has a significant effect on the thermal properties of the CPEs, affecting both their glass transition and crystalline behaviour. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering studies also indicate that changing the nature of the counterion influences the microstructural organization in thin films (face-on versus edge-on orientation). The affinity of the CPEs with the underlying photoactive layer in PSCs is highly correlated with the counterion species. Finally, in addition to an increase of the power conversion efficiency of ca 15% when using these CPEs as cathode interfacial layers in PSCs, a higher device stability is noted, compared to a reference device with a calcium interlayer. © 2020 Society of Industrial Chemistry
Gemeente Hoogland : sectie E genaamd Koelhorst : derde blad
Interdiffusion and crystallization in HfO2/Al2O3 superlattices
The interplay of interdiffusion and crystallization in HfO2/Al2O3 superlattices during spike annealing at 1050 degrees C was studied using x-ray reflectivity and x-ray diffraction. A transition in thermal stability was found as a function of HfO2 thickness between 2.3 and 3.2 nm. This transition is due to a crossover of HfO2 crystallization and amorphous HfO2/Al2O3 interdiffusion kinetics. For thin HfO2, amorphous HfO2 and Al2O3 interdiffuse and subsequently crystallize as HfAlOx into a cubic-HfO2-like phase. For thicker HfO2, HfO2 layers crystallize individually into the monoclinic phase. As a consequence, interdiffusion between HfO2 and Al2O3 is suppressed because of the immiscibility of Al2O3 in monoclinic HfO2
Thermal Stability of Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2 '-phenylethoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MPE-PPV):Fullerene Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells
To improve the thermal stability of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells, a new polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-phenylethoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MPE-PPV), has been designed and synthesized, which showed an increased glass transition temperature (T(g)) of 111 degrees C. The thermal characteristics and phase behavior of MPE-PPV:[6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester ([60]PCBM) blends were investigated by means of modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry and rapid heating-cooling calorimetry. The thermal stability of MPE-PPV: [60] PCBM solar cells was compared with devices based on the reference MDMO-PPV material with a T(g) of 45 degrees C. Monitoring of the photo-current-voltage characteristics at elevated temperatures revealed that the use of high-T(g) MPE-PPV resulted in a substantial improvement of the thermal stability of the solar cells. Furthermore, a systematic transmission electron microscope study of the active polymer:fullerene layer at elevated temperatures likewise demonstrated a more stable morphology for the MPE-PPV: [60] PCBM blend. Both observations indicate that the use of high-T(g) MPE-PPV as donor material leads to a reduced free movement of the fullerene molecules within the active layer of the photovoltaic device. Finally, optimization of the PPV:fullerene solar cells revealed that for both types of devices the use of [6,6]-phenyl C(71)-butyric acid methyl ester ([70]PCBM) resulted in a substantial increase of current density and power conversion efficiency, up to 3.0% for MDMO-PPV:[70]PCBM and 2.3% for MPE-PPV:[70]PCBM
Ester-functionalized poly(3-alkylthiophene) copolymers : synthesis, physicochemical characterization and performance in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells
The introduction of functional moieties in the donor polymer (side chains) offers a potential pathway toward selective modification of the nanomorphology of conjugated polymer:fullerene active layer blends applied in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics, pursuing morphology control and solar cell stability. For this purpose, two types of poly(3-alkylthiophene) random copolymers, incorporating different amounts (10/30/50%) of ester-functionalized side chains, were efficiently synthesized using the Rieke method. The solar cell performance of the functionalized copolymers was evaluated and compared to the pristine P3HT:PCBM system. It was observed that the physicochemical and opto-electronic characteristics of the polythiophene donor material can be modified to a certain extent via copolymerization without (too much) jeopardizing the OPV efficiency, as far as the functionalized side chains are introduced in a moderate ratio
Chemical and structural modifications in a 193-nm photoresist after low-k dry etch
Wet processes are gaining renewed interest for the removal of post-etch photoresist on porous dielectrics in semiconductor manufacturing. However, specifications on material loss and k-value integrity considerably reduce formulation space for a purely wet-chemical clean. Hence characterization of photoresist degradation by etch is needed to support the selection of wet cleaning chemistries. In this work, the degradation of a DUV (deep ultra-violet) photoresist by a dielectric etch plasma is characterized by spectroscopic as well as by polymer science characterization techniques. Results show that degradation of the DUV photoresist under study does not follow the mechanisms previously proposed for etched DUV photoresist films, but is rather comparable to the degradation of PMMA under low energy radiation. Degradation is more intense in the photoresist top layer, forming a cross-linked crust that is insoluble in organic solvents. Based on FTIR and H-1 NMR analysis of isolated crust samples, a cross-linking mechanism is proposed that is based on the reaction between intra-chain radicals and/or between intra-chain radicals and end-chain propagating radicals. Implications for the wet removal of photoresist layers are discussed. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
High-Permittivity Conjugated Polyelectrolyte Interlayers for High-Performance Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells
Conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) interfacial layers present a powerful way to boost the I-V characteristics of organic photovoltaics. Nevertheless, clear guidelines with respect to the structure of high-performance interlayers are still lacking. In this work, impedance spectroscopy is applied to probe the dielectric permittivity of a series of polythiophene-based CPEs. The presence of ionic pendant groups grants the formation of a capacitive double layer, boosting the charge extraction and device efficiency. A counteracting effect is the diminishing affinity with the underlying photoactive layer. To balance these two effects, we found copolymer structures containing nonionic side chains to be beneficial
