    Prezygotic mate selection is only partially correlated with the expression of NaS-like RNases and affects offspring phenotypes.

    Nicotiana attenuata styles preferentially select pollen from among accessions with corresponding expression patterns of NaS-like-RNases (SLRs), and the postpollination ethylene burst (PPEB) is an accurate predictor of seed siring success. However, the ecological consequences of mate selection, its effect on the progeny, and the role of SLRs in the control of ethylene signaling remain unknown. We explored the link between the magnitude of the ethylene burst and expression of the SLRs in a set of recombinant inbred lines (RILs), dissected the genetic underpinnings of mate selection through genome-wide association study (GWAS), and examined its outcome for phenotypes in the next generation. We found that high levels of PPEB are associated with the absence of SLR2 in most of the tested RILs. We identified candidate genes potentially involved in the control of mate selection and showed that pollination of maternal genotypes with their favored pollen donors produces offspring with longer roots. When the maternal genotypes are only able to select against nonfavored pollen donors, the selection for such positive traits is abolished. We conclude that plants' ability of mate choice contributes to measurable changes in progeny phenotypes and is thus likely a target of selection

    The energy radiated by moving cracks in a discrete background is analyzed. The energy flow through a given surface is expressed in terms of a generalized Poynting vector. The velocity of the crack is determined by the radiation by the crack tip.     Vale of York 3-D borehole interpretation and cross-sections study

    The Vale of York between Doncaster and Scunthorpe in the south and York and Bugthorpe in the north is largely underlain by bedrock of the Sherwood Sandstone Group – one of the regions principal aquifers. Significant superficial deposits of Quaternary age overlie the Sherwood Sandstone. This study aims to investigate the nature of these superficial deposits with respect to their relationship with the underlying aquifer. The Vale of York project area represents a varied glaciated terrain, consisting of pro-glacial finegrained sediments, coarser glaciofluvilal sediments and extensive glacial tills. These diverse superficial units vary in thickness throughout the project area. The hydrogeological nature of the natural superficial sequence is consequently highly variable. Units may be considered as aquitards, while others may act as aquifers, providing a potential pathway to the underlying sandstone. The classification of lithologies as aquifer or aquitard is described in detail in this report. To investigate the hydrogeological nature of the superficial sequence, six east-west and three north-south lithostratigraphical cross-sections were constructed. A range of geoscientific information was considered, including existing geological mapping and over 3000 fully attributed and coded boreholes. The cross-sections show a subdivision of the superficial sequence into lithostratigraphical units. Each unit is described in detail in this report. In addition, a series of thematic maps were generated from the lithological component of the digital borehole data. Total superficial aquifer and superficial aquitard maps show how the lithological nature of the superficial sequence varies across the area. Rockhead elevation and superficial thickness maps indicate where the sandstone aquifer outcrops at the ground surface. In summary, four main lithostratigraphical units overlie the Sherwood Sandstone Group aquifer in the project area: a basal sequence of glaciofluvial sand and gravel (interpreted as a superficial aquifer), glaciolacustrine laminated silt & clay (aquitard), glacial till comprising sandy gravelly clay (aquitard), and a cover sequence of fluvial and aeolian sand, clay and peat (aquifer / aquitard). The correlations illustrate that in certain areas, superficial deposits are thin or absent and that in these areas the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer comes directly to ground surface

    The sensitivity of BAO Dark Energy Constraints to General Isocurvature Perturbations

    Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) surveys will be a leading method for addressing the dark energy challenge in the next decade. We explore in detail the effect of allowing for small amplitude admixtures of general isocurvature perturbations in addition to the dominant adiabatic mode. We find that non-adiabatic initial conditions leave the sound speed unchanged but instead excite different harmonics. These harmonics couple differently to Silk damping, altering the form and evolution of acoustic waves in the baryon-photon fluid prior to decoupling. This modifies not only the scale on which the sound waves imprint onto the baryon distribution, which is used as the standard ruler in BAO surveys, but also the shape, width and height of the BAO peak. We discuss these effects in detail and show how more general initial conditions impact our interpretation of cosmological data in dark energy studies. We find that the inclusion of these additional isocurvature modes leads to an increase in the Dark Energy Task Force Figure of merit by 140% and 60% for the BOSS and ADEPT experiments respectively when considered in conjunction with Planck data. We also show that the incorrect assumption of adiabaticity has the potential to bias our estimates of the dark energy parameters by 3σ3\sigma (1σ1\sigma) for a single correlated isocurvature mode, and up to 8σ8\sigma (3σ3\sigma) for three correlated isocurvature modes in the case of the BOSS (ADEPT) experiment. We find that the use of the large scale structure data in conjunction with CMB data improves our ability to measure the contributions of different modes to the initial conditions by as much as 100% for certain modes in the fully correlated case.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figure

    Average luminosity distance in inhomogeneous universes

    The paper studies the correction to the distance modulus induced by inhomogeneities and averaged over all directions from a given observer. The inhomogeneities are modeled as mass-compensated voids in random or regular lattices within Swiss-cheese universes. Void radii below 300 Mpc are considered, which are supported by current redshift surveys and limited by the recently observed imprint such voids leave on CMB. The averaging over all directions, performed by numerical ray tracing, is non-perturbative and includes the supernovas inside the voids. Voids aligning along a certain direction produce a cumulative gravitational lensing correction that increases with their number. Such corrections are destroyed by the averaging over all directions, even in non-randomized simple cubic void lattices. At low redshifts, the average correction is not zero but decays with the peculiar velocities and redshift. Its upper bound is provided by the maximal average correction which assumes no random cancelations between different voids. It is described well by a linear perturbation formula and, for the voids considered, is 20% of the correction corresponding to the maximal peculiar velocity. The average correction calculated in random and simple cubic void lattices is severely damped below the predicted maximal one after a single void diameter. That is traced to cancellations between the corrections from the fronts and backs of different voids. All that implies that voids cannot imitate the effect of dark energy unless they have radii and peculiar velocities much larger than the currently observed. The results obtained allow one to readily predict the redshift above which the direction-averaged fluctuation in the Hubble diagram falls below a required precision and suggest a method to extract the background Hubble constant from low redshift data without the need to correct for peculiar velocities.Comment: 34 pages, 21 figures, matches the version accepted in JCA

    Periodic and Quasiperiodic Motion of an Elongated Microswimmer in Poiseuille Flow

    We study the dynamics of a prolate spheroidal microswimmer in Poiseuille flow for different flow geometries. When moving between two parallel plates or in a cylindrical microchannel, the swimmer performs either periodic swinging or periodic tumbling motion. Although the trajectories of spherical and elongated swimmers are qualitatively similar, the swinging and tumbling frequency strongly depends on the aspect ratio of the swimmer. In channels with reduced symmetry the swimmers perform quasiperiodic motion which we demonstrate explicitely for swimming in a channel with elliptical cross section

    Narrative Exposure Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder associated with repeated interpersonal trauma in patients with Severe Mental Illness: a mixed methods design

    Background: In the Netherlands, most patients with severe mental illness (SMI) receive flexible assertive community treatment (FACT) provided by multidisciplinary community mental health teams. SMI patients with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are sometimes offered evidence-based trauma-focused treatment like eye movement desensitization reprocessing or prolonged exposure. There is a large amount of evidence for the effectiveness of narrative exposure therapy (NET) within various vulnerable patient groups with repeated interpersonal trauma. Some FACT-teams provide NET for patients with comorbid PTSD, which is promising, but has not been specifically studied in SMI patients. Objectives: The primary aim is to evaluate NET in SMI patients with comorbid PTSD associated with repeated interpersonal trauma to get insight into whether (1) PTSD and dissociative symptoms changes and (2) changes occur in the present SMI symptoms, care needs, quality of life, global functioning, and care consumption. The second aim is to gain insight into patients’ experiences with NET and to identify influencing factors on treatment results. Methods: This study will have a mixed methods convergent design consisting of quantitative repeated measures and qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews based on Grounded Theory. The study population will include adult SMI outpatients (n=25) with comorbid PTSD and receiving NET. The quantitative study parameters will be existence and severity of PTSD, dissociative, and SMI symptoms; care needs; quality of life; global functioning; and care consumption. In a longitudinal analysis, outcomes will be analyzed using mixed models to estimate the difference in means between baseline and repeated measurements. The qualitative study parameters will be experiences with NET and perceived factors for success or failure. Integration of quantitative and qualitative results will be focused on interpreting how qualitative results enhance the understanding of quantitative outcomes. Discussion: The results of this study will provide more insight into influencing factors for clinical changes in this population

    Diffusion-limited aggregation: A relationship between surface thermodynamics and crystal morphology

    We have combined the original diffusion-limited aggregation model introduced by Witten and Sander with the surface thermodynamics of the growing solid aggregate. The theory is based on the consideration of the surface chemical potential as a thermodynamic function of the temperature and nearest-neighbor configuration. The Monte Carlo simulations on a two-dimensional square lattice produce the broad range of shapes such as fractal dendritic structures, densely branching patterns, and compact aggregates. The morphology diagram illustrating the relationship between the model parameters and cluster geometry is presented and discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
