SUSTAINABILITY IN EDUCATION IN VULNERABLE GROUPS: ACCESS TO EDUCATION SERVICES FOR CHILDREN OF SEASONAL MIGRANT AGRICULTURAL WORKER FAMILIES IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
This study aims to examine educational status of seasonal migrant agricultural worker (SMAW) families and their children, one of the vulnerable groups in Turkiye, under pre-pandemic conditions, as well as their access to educational services during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this study, designed according to the mixed research method, purposive sampling was used. The data were collected through face-to-face surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, and key person/institution interviews. The findings showed that adults and children in SMAW households were mostly primary or middle school graduates due to financial constraints, and unlike boys, girls dropped out of school due to gender-based reasons such as early marriage and the belief that girls should not be educated. With the pandemic, it revealed that the existing problems experienced by children in SMAW households regarding access to education and its sustainability have deepened further. The findings of this study suggest that without the development of necessary support mechanisms to increase the continuity of education for children who start working for the first time with their parents in the agricultural sector during the pandemic period, it is inevitable and permanent that the children who started working during this period will be disconnected from education in the long term
The development of bioethical values instrument for secondary education students within bioethics education
Bu araştırmanın amacı ortaöğretim öğrencilerinin biyolojik bilimlerin ve özellikle gen teknolojisinin uygulamalarından doğan etik tartışmalar konusunda karar verirken ele aldıkları değerleri ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla kullanılabilecek Biyoetik Değer Envanterinin geliştirilmesidir. Araştırmanın hedefleri doğrultusunda nitel ve nicel veri toplama süreçlerini içeren, 4 adımdan oluşan özgün bir envanter geliştirme modeli kullanılmıştır.
Bu model çerçevesinde birinci adımda öncelikle biyolojik bilimler ve özellikle gen teknolojisi genel başlığı ile ilgili etik tartışmaların analizi yapılmış, bu alanda çalışan araştırmacılar ve öğretmen görüşleri de alınarak envanterde ele alınacak konu başlıkları belirlenmiştir. İkinci adımda, belirlenen her bir konu başlığı ile ilgili etik ikilemlere dayalı senaryolar hazırlanmıştır. Senaryoların sonuna, öğrencilerin konu ile ilgili karar verirken ele aldıkları değerleri, tutumlarını ve görüşlerini ortaya koyabilecekleri açık uçlu sorular eklenmiştir.
Üçüncü adımda, senaryolar ortaöğretim 9. sınıf öğrencilerine uygulanmıştır. Uygulama öncesi, Ankara genelindeki farklı sosyoekonomik parametrelere sahip okulların örneklemde eşit oranda temsil edilmesi hedeflenmiş ve bu amaçla Devlet Planlama Teşkilatı (DPT) verileri kullanılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda Ankara genelinde 4 farklı gelişmişlik düzeyini temsil eden toplam 8 ilçede, 13 genel lise ile 7 Anadolu lisesini kapsayacak şekilde uygulama yapılmıştır. Bu uygulama sırasında senaryoların yanı sıra öğrencilerin bu alana yönelik temel bilgilerinin ve demografik verilerinin ortaya çıkarılabilmesi amacıyla Bilgi Testi ve Kişisel Bilgi Anketi uygulanmıştır. Öğrencilerin senaryolara ilişkin vermiş oldukları cevaplar nitel veri analizi tekniklerinden içerik analizi stratejileri kullanılarak incelenmiş ve yapılan tematik kodlamalar doğrultusunda envanter çoktan seçmeli forma dönüştürülmüştür. Dördüncü adımda çoktan seçmeli form ilgili uzman ve öğrenci görüşlerine başvurularak, envantere son şekli verilmiştir. Sonuç bölümünde ise, geliştirilen Biyoetik Değer Envanteri'nin biyoetik eğitimi kapsamında önemi tartışılmış ve uygulamaya yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

the values the secondary education students consider while they are deciding about the ethical
issues which emerge from the application of biological sciences, especially gene technologies in
different areas. In accordance with the targets of the research, an original instrument developing
model is established, consisting of 4 stages including qualitative and quantitative data collection
strategies.
Within the frame of this model, literature review related to biological sciences, and especially
about the general title \"gene technology\", was done primarily at the 1st stage. By examining the
title list created by the analysis result which was studied through the researchers\' and teachers\'
opinions, titles to be covered within the instrument were determined.
At the 2nd stage, draft scenarios in the form of ethical dilemmas were prepared about each title.
Open ended questions were added to the end of the scenarios in order to put forth the values,
attitudes and opinions which the students concern while deciding about the subject. The
scenarios, prepared at the 3rd step were applied to the 9th grade students of secondary
education. In order to make a wide scaled research available, the equal representation of the
schools having different socio-economic parameters in Ankara region-wide was targeted and to
make a healthy choice for appointing these schools, State Planning Organization (SPO)'s data
were used. So, in total 8 towns representing 4 different development levels, the application was
performed including 13 regular and 7 Anatolian high-schools. During this application, in
addition to the scenarios Knowledge Test and Personal Knowledge Survey were also
applied to reveal the students' basic knowledge on this area and demographic information. The
answers the students gave to the open ended questions were examined using content analysis
strategies of the qualitative data analyzing techniques and in accordance with the thematic
coding made; the instrument was transformed to a multiple choice form.
At the 4th step, the expert and student opinions were consulted about the multiple choice
instrument form and the instrument was finalized.
