DYNAMICS AND PRICE VOLATILITY IN FARM-RETAIL LIVESTOCK PRICE RELATIONSHIPS

    Get PDF
This study uses an error correction model (ECM) to investigate dynamics in farm-retail price relationships. The ECM is a more general method of incorporating dynamics and the long-run, steady-state relationships between farm and retail prices than has been used to data. Monthly data for beef and pork are used to test the time-series properties for the ECM specification. The model is extended to study price volatility through the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) process. Accommodation of the GARCH process provides a useful way of analyzing both mean and variance effects of policy or market structure changes.Demand and Price Analysis, Livestock Production/Industries,

Multiple Secret Keys based Security for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
We propose a security approach that uses secret key cryptography and key management along with re-keying support. A salient feature of our approach is that a secret key is embedded in the source code of every node to protect the other keys in its non-volatile memory. Even the node is captured physically; the sensitive information cannot be retrieved. Our key selection protocol uses the node ID and some basic rotate and multiplication function to select the key for current data transmission. Because of this dynamic key selection, our approach identifies the replay attack, DoS attack and Sybil attack. Our simulation results shows that our security mechanism efficiently controls various attacks with lower resource requirements and the network resilience against node capture is substantially improved

Maternal repair system- an analysis in retrospect

    Get PDF
Influence of caffeine, cysteine, hydroxyures and cycloherimide on maternal repair system operative in female Drosophila was studied using rod-X males and Oster females. The number of parental matings was kept constant. A new method of statistical analysis was employed to examine the frequency of sex-chromosome loss in these experiments. A re-analysis of published data was also done using this method. The existence of a maternal repair system was not upheld. The observed discrepancies between data reported herein and those published earlier and the possible reasons are discussed

Japanese defence policy since 1976: latest trends

    Get PDF
This study sets Japan's defence posture in the context of world politics, especially in regard to the Soviet Union and the United States. The different perceptions of defence by different groups of people in Japan (the man on the street, the political parties and business groups) are discussed. The gradual development from a heavy dependence on the United States for defence is slowly progressing towards a more equal sharing of defence responsibilities between the United States and Japan. The author points out the practical necessities for this change, the pressures that the United States is putting on Japan to carry out this change, and also the problems and fears that arise in Japan because of this pressure. Specific topics covered include the development of defence production industries in Japan, the exchange of weapons technology with the United States, Japan's ability to defend her sea lanes, the concept of collective defence responsibility and the diverse opinions aroused both in Japan itself and in neighbouring countries in regard to these developments. The author has added an addendum since the publication of the 1983 Japanese Defence White Paper, the reaction to which again emphasises the difficulties Japanese defence planners and politicians face in trying to achieve a balanced defence policy

Plankton production in the Vembanad Lake and adjacent waters in relation to the environmental parameters

    Get PDF
The Vembanad Lake and its connected backwater system around Cochin are well known as the nursery grounds for the commercially important fishery resources of this area. This account embodies the results of studies on the environmental parameters of the estuarine system around Cocb in extending over an area of 300 sq. km. Observations were made on the hydrography, primary and secondary productions. The relative influence of the environmental factors like, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrients on the plankton production is interpreted from the correlation coefficient

Quantitative ecology of phytoplankton in the Cochin backwater

    Get PDF
A one-year study on the standing crop in terms of chlorophylls, primary production and total-cell counts of four station grids has shown that there were regional and seasonal variations in the magnitude of phytoplankton production in the Cochin backwater. Statistically treated using a microcomputor, a multiple regression relationship has been established between parameters within stations. But th<^ Correlation coefBclent and Standard Regression coefficient have revealed that the plankton production and the related parameters at all the stations were independent of each other and the parameters varied from station to station. Probable reasons are briefly discussed

Controlled delivery of essential oils for the management of rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros L.) in coconut

    Get PDF
Rhinoceros beetle, Oryctes rhinoceros L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), causes damage to coconut palms by feeding on the unopened fronds affecting photosynthesis. Management measures adopted include use of chemical insecticides and bioagents. Though chemical insecticides are effective, the undesirable effect on human and non-target organisms have led to dependence on botanochemicals for pest management. Essential oils derived from plant parts have the ability to cause desired control on insect pest. The limitation for use at field level is attributed to quick decline in its efficacy due to evaporation and photo degradation. Hence, this study aims to develop a polymer based delivery matrix for the release of essential oils more effectively. Essential oils (citriodora, basil and ajowan) and major constituent thymol, caused growth regulating effect in O. rhinoceros at 0.1 per cent. Among the essential oils screened, matrix loaded with basil and citriodora oils were superior with only 18 and 22 per cent incidence of spindle damage, respectively. Pest infestation in the control plots were over 74 per cent. The physical properties of the polymer matrix and dissipation pattern of actives loaded into the sheet were determined. This offers a potential to be incorporated as a component in IPM measures of rhinoceros beetle

Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus) fishery During 1950-72

    Get PDF
The Bombayduck catch forms about 7% of the total, all' India landings. 97% of the catches of this fish comes from tbs coast of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Difference is observed in the pattern of seasonal variations along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts though the peak and trough periods for the two states coincide. The annual landings varied between 7 and 128 thousand tonnes during the 1950- ,72 period. After 1959 the bulk of the fishery appears to have shifted from Maharashtra to the Gujarat coast. During the 1960-72 period, it was the Gujarat catch that determined the trends in the landings of this fish for the country as a whole
