    Against The Establishment: How The Campaigns of Ross Perot and Jesse Ventura were Antecedents to Donald Trump

    In 2016, the United States elected Donald Trump, a former businessman and reality star, as president. How did that happen? Why did that happen? There are many who have tried to answer this question in the years following his election, some of whom have offered variations on a similar idea: Trump\u27s style of politics is part of the larger trend of conservatism that has been taking over since Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980. This idea has been propagated both on the left and on the right, and while at first it may seem apt to compare Trump and Reagan, the two could not have been more different in terms of the campaigns they ran, the vision they had for the country, and how they transformed the nation. So if not Reagan, who was/were the political antecedents to Donald Trump. I propose that Trump\u27s brand of anti-establishment politics has much more resonance with the campaigns of Ross Perot and Jesse Ventura, who ran independent campaigns during the 1990s, and who each honed their own unique styles that allowed them to frame themselves as against the establishment. By historicizing Perot and Ventura\u27s campaigns within the larger economic, political, and cultural changes that occurred within the United States from the end of the Second World War all the way up to the end of the Cold War, I attempt to show how their campaigns were not anomalies, but rather, were manifestations of a new political energy that developed in response to a rapidly changing world and a new world order that prioritized certain people, industries, and values, and left others behind. It is with this historical context, along with a close examination of these two political outsiders, that may help explain how Donald Trump became electable in 2016

    Flux Sensitivity of VERITAS

    VERITAS is a new major ground-based gamma-ray observatory with an array of seven 10 m optical reflectors to be built at the Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona, USA. It will consist of an array of imaging Cherenkov telescopes designed to conduct critical measurements of AGNs and SNRs in the energy range of 50 GeV - 50 TeV. The design of the array has been optimized for the highest sensitivity to point sources in the 100 GeV - 10 TeV band when the stereoscopic imaging technique is employed. Maximum versatility of the array has been another major optimization criterion.     Calculations of the propagation of UH-nuclei were improved by extending the number of individual nuclides considered, and by using more recent evaluations of the rigidity dependence of the escape length, the possible source composition, and altered cross sections. The effects of using different expressions for the dependence of abundances on first ionization potentials (FIP) are outlined. The sensitivity of the calculated elemental abundances to the various changes made in the propagation assumptions are discussed

    A Search for TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from Pulsar Tails by VERITAS

    We report on the search for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from the regions around three nearby supersonic pulsars (PSR B0355+54, PSR J0357+3205, and PSR J1740+1000) that exhibit long X-ray tails. To date there is no clear detection of TeV emission from any pulsar tail that is prominent in X-ray or radio. We provide upper limits on the TeV flux, and luminosity, and also compare these limits with other pulsar wind nebulae detected in X-rays and the tail emission model predictions. We find that at least one of the three tails is likely to be detected in observations that are a factor of 2–3 more sensitive. The analysis presented here also has implications for deriving the properties of pulsar tails, for those pulsars whose tails could be detected in TeV

    ResumoO tratamento por ondas de choque é uma opção na ortopedia. O mecanismo exato pelo qual funcionam as ondas de choque para tratar doenças musculoesqueléticas não é conhecido. O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer a análise qualitativa da efetividade do tratamento por ondas de choque em pacientes com patologias musculoesqueléticas e pseudoartroses. A pesquisa foi feita nas bases de dados Cochrane Library, Medline e Lilacs. Encontrou 39 estudos que relatam o tratamento por ondas de choque de doenças musculoesqueléticas. Os resultados são muito variados, assim como os tipos de protocolo. Os estudos que avaliaram a efetividade do tratamento por ondas de choque para epicondilite lateral, tendinopatias do ombro, osteoartrose do joelho, osteonecrose da cabeça do fêmur e bursite trocanteriana relataram resultados inconsistentes para a melhoria dos pacientes. Os que avaliaram pacientes com tendinopatia calcária, fascite plantar, tendinopatia do tendão calcâneo e patelar e pseudoartrose mostraram benefício. O tratamento por ondas de choque é um método seguro e não invasivo para os casos crônicos em que os convencionais não tenham sido satisfatórios e deve ser associado aos outros métodos de tratamento das tendinopatias. Novos estudos de qualidade são necessários.AbstractShockwave treatment is an option within orthopedics. The exact mechanism through which shockwaves function for treating musculoskeletal diseases is unknown. The aim of this study was to make a qualitative analysis on the effectiveness of shockwave treatment among patients with musculoskeletal pathological conditions and pseudarthrosis. Searches were conducted in the Cochrane Library, Medline and Lilacs databases. Thirty‐nine studies that reported using shockwave treatment for musculoskeletal diseases were found. Their results varied greatly, as did the types of protocol used. The studies that evaluated the effectiveness of shockwave treatment for lateral epicondylitis, shoulder tendinopathy, knee osteoarthrosis, femoral head osteonecrosis and trochanteric bursitis reported inconsistent results for most of their patients. Those that evaluated patients with calcifying tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy and pseudarthrosis showed benefits. Shockwave treatment is a safe and non‐invasive method for chronic cases in which conventional techniques have been unsatisfactory and should be used in association with other treatment methods for tendinopathy.
