Does Cosmological Term Influence Gravitational Lensing?

We analyze the bending of light by galaxies or clusters of galaxies in the presence of the cosmological term. Going over to the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker coordinates, used in fact for the description of actual observations, we demonstrate that the cosmological constant does not influence practically the lensing effect.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

Passive and active seismic isolation for gravitational radiation detectors and other instruments

    Get PDF
Some new passive and active methods for reducing the effects of seismic disturbances on suspended masses are described, with special reference to gravitational radiation detectors in which differential horizontal motions of two or more suspended test masses are monitored. In these methods it is important to be able to determine horizontal seismic accelerations independent of tilts of the ground. Measurement of changes in inclination of the suspension wire of a test mass, relative to a direction defined by a reference arm of long period of oscillation, makes it possible to carry this out over the frequency range of interest for earth-based gravitational radiation detectors. The signal obtained can then be used to compensate for the effects of seismic disturbances on the test mass if necessary. Alternatively the signal corresponding to horizontal acceleration can be used to move the point from which the test mass is suspended in such a way as to reduce the effect of the seismic disturbance and also damp pendulum motions of the suspended test mass. Experimental work with an active anti-seismic system of this type is described

The NASA-IGES geometry data exchange standard

    Get PDF
Described here are the data exchange efforts and plans supported by the NASA Steering Committee for Surface Modeling and Grid Generation. Current methods for geometry data exchange between computer aided design (CAD) systems and NASA computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis systems are tedious and induce errors. A Geometry Data Exchange Standard is proposed, utilizing a subset of an existing national standard titled Initial Graphic Exchange Standard (IGES). Future plans for data exchange standardization include all aspects of CFD data. Software systems to utilize this NASA-IGES Geometry Data Exchange Specification are under development

Steady internal flow and aerodynamic loads analysis of shuttle thermal protection system

An analytical model for calculation of ascent steady state tile loading was developed and validated with wind tunnel data. The analytical model is described and results are given. Results are given for loading due to shocks and skin friction. The analysis included calculation of internal flow (porous media flow and channel flow) to obtain pressures and integration of the pressures to obtain forces and moments on an insulation tile. A heat transfer program was modified by using analogies between heat transfer and fluid flow so that it could be used for internal flow calculation. The type of insulation tile considered was undensified reusable surface insulation (RSI) without gap fillers, and the location studied was the lower surface of the orbiter. Force and moment results are reported for parameter variations on surface pressure distribution, gap sizes, insulation permeability, and tile thickness

Magneto-optics in pure and defective Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs from first-principles

The magneto-optical properties of Ga1x_{1-x}Mnx_{x}As including their most common defects were investigated with precise first--principles density-functional FLAPW calculations in order to: {\em i}) elucidate the origin of the features in the Kerr spectra in terms of the underlying electronic structure; {\em ii}) perform an accurate comparison with experiments; and {\em iii}) understand the role of the Mn concentration and occupied sites in shaping the spectra. In the substitutional case, our results show that most of the features have an interband origin and are only slightly affected by Drude--like contributions, even at low photon energies. While not strongly affected by the Mn concentration for the intermediately diluted range (xx\sim 10%), the Kerr factor shows a marked minimum (up to 1.5o^o) occurring at a photon energy of \sim 0.5 eV. For interstitial Mn, the calculated results bear a striking resemblance to the experimental spectra, pointing to the comparison between simulated and experimental Kerr angles as a valid tool to distinguish different defects in the diluted magnetic semiconductors framework.Comment: 10 pages including 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Emergence of the Shackleton Range from beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet due to glacial erosion

This paper explores the long-term evolution of a subglacial fjord landscape in the Shackleton Range, Antarctica. We propose that prolonged ice-sheet erosion across a passive continental margin caused troughs to deepen and lower the surrounding ice-sheet surface, leaving adjacent mountains exposed. Geomorphological evidence suggests a change in the direction of regional ice flow accompanied emergence. Simple calculations suggest that isostatic compensation caused by the deepening of bounding ice-stream troughs lowered the ice-sheet surface relative to the mountains by ~800m. Use of multiple cosmogenic isotopes on bedrock and erratics (26Al, 10Be, 21Ne) provides evidence that overriding of the massif and the deepening of the adjacent troughs occurred earlier than the Quaternary. Perhaps this occurred in the mid-Miocene, as elsewhere in East Antarctica in the McMurdo Dry Valleys and the Lambert basin. The implication is that glacial erosion instigates feedback that can change ice-sheet thickness, extent, and direction of flow. Indeed, as the subglacial troughs evolve over millions of years, they increase topographic relief; and this changes the dynamics of the ice sheet. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
