Prospects for India's cereal supply and demand to 2020:
The possibility of an emerging cereal gap of serious proportions by the year 2020, is a useful illustration of the kind of constructive dialogue IFPRI hopes to encourage. It responds to several quite recent developments, notably the rapid expansion of India's industrial and service sectors since the 1991 structural reforms, the improved prospects for continued growth over the next few decades, and the likelihood of rising per capita incomes that could generate substantially increased demand for livestock products. As demand for livestock products grows, livestock production could increasingly depend on cereals for feed — perhaps as much as 50 million tons by 2020, according to G.S. Bhalla, Peter Hazell, and John Kerr, authors of this 2020 discussion paper on Prospects for Balancing Cereal Needs in India to 2020. These conclusions differ somewhat from other IFPRI studies, which have generally found that growth in demand for livestock products will be lower than the current study. This divergence of views is a useful signal to policymakers to pay careful attention to trends in demand for livestock products in India in the coming years. This study and the rest of IFPRI's 2020 research have consistently pointed to the vital link between agricultural policies and prospects for production growth in the next two decades. Pion-Nucleus Scattering at Medium Energies with Densities from Chiral Effective Field Theories
Recently developed chiral effective field theory models provide excellent
descriptions of the bulk characteristics of finite nuclei, but have not been
tested with other observables. In this work, densities from both relativistic
point-coupling models and mean-field meson models are used in the analysis of
meson-nucleus scattering at medium energies. Elastic scattering observables for
790
MeV/ on Pb are calculated in a relativistic impulse
approximation, using the Kemmer-Duffin-Petiau formalism to calculate the
nucleus optical potential.Comment: 9 page
The energy budget in Rayleigh-Benard convection
It is shown using three series of Rayleigh number simulations of varying
aspect ratio AR and Prandtl number Pr that the normalized dissipation at the
wall, while significantly greater than 1, approaches a constant dependent upon
AR and Pr. It is also found that the peak velocity, not the mean square
velocity, obeys the experimental scaling of Ra^{0.5}. The scaling of the mean
square velocity is closer to Ra^{0.46}, which is shown to be consistent with
experimental measurements and the numerical results for the scaling of Nu and
the temperature if there are strong correlations between the velocity and

Metastable dark matter mechanisms for INTEGRAL 511 keV rays and DAMA/CoGeNT events
We explore dark matter mechanisms that can simultaneously explain the
galactic 511 keV gamma rays observed by INTEGRAL/SPI, the DAMA/LIBRA annual
modulation, and the excess of low-recoil dark matter candidates observed by
CoGeNT. It requires three nearly degenerate states of dark matter in the 4-7
GeV mass range, with splittings respectively of order an MeV and a few keV. The
top two states have the small mass gap and transitions between them, either
exothermic or endothermic, can account for direct detections. Decays from one
of the top states to the ground state produce low-energy positrons in the
galaxy whose associated 511 keV gamma rays are seen by INTEGRAL. This decay can
happen spontaneously, if the excited state is metastable (longer-lived than the
age of the universe), or it can be triggered by inelastic scattering of the
metastable states into the shorter-lived ones. We focus on a simple model where
the DM is a triplet of an SU(2) hidden sector gauge symmetry, broken at the
scale of a few GeV, giving masses of order \lsim 1 GeV to the dark gauge
bosons, which mix kinetically with the standard model hypercharge. The purely
decaying scenario can give the observed angular dependence of the 511 keV
signal with no positron diffusion, while the inelastic scattering mechanism
requires transport of the positrons over distances \sim 1 kpc before
annihilating. We note that an x-ray line of several keV in energy, due to
single-photon decays involving the top DM states, could provide an additional
component to the diffuse x-ray background. The model is testable by proposed

Spinning BTZ Black Hole versus Kerr Black Hole : A Closer Look
By applying Newman's algorithm, the AdS_3 rotating black hole solution is
``derived'' from the nonrotating black hole solution of Banados, Teitelboim,
and Zanelli (BTZ). The rotating BTZ solution derived in this fashion is given
in ``Boyer-Lindquist-type'' coordinates whereas the form of the solution
originally given by BTZ is given in a kind of an ``unfamiliar'' coordinates
which are related to each other by a transformation of time coordinate alone.
The relative physical meaning between these two time coordinates is carefully
studied. Since the Kerr-type and Boyer-Lindquist-type coordinates for rotating
BTZ solution are newly found via Newman's algorithm, next, the transformation
to Kerr-Schild-type coordinates is looked for. Indeed, such transformation is
found to exist. And in this Kerr-Schild-type coordinates, truely maximal
extension of its global structure by analytically continuing to ``antigravity

Charged Rotating Black Holes on a 3-Brane
We study exact stationary and axisymmetric solutions describing charged
rotating black holes localized on a 3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld.
The charges of the black holes are considered to be of two types, the first
being an induced tidal charge that appears as an imprint of nonlocal
gravitational effects from the bulk space and the second is a usual electric
charge arising due to a Maxwell field trapped on the brane. We assume a special
ansatz for the metric on the brane taking it to be of the Kerr-Schild form and
show that the Kerr-Newman solution of ordinary general relativity in which the
electric charge is superceded by a tidal charge satisfies a closed system of
the effective gravitational field equations on the brane. It turns out that the
negative tidal charge may provide a mechanism for spinning up the black hole so
that its rotation parameter exceeds its mass. This is not allowed in the
framework of general relativity. We also find a new solution that represents a
rotating black hole on the brane carrying both charges. We show that for a
rapid enough rotation the combined influence of the rotational dynamics and the
local bulk effects of the "squared" energy momentum tensor on the brane distort
the horizon structure of the black hole in such a way that it can be thought of
as composed of non-uniformly rotating null circles with growing radii from the
equatorial plane to the poles. We finally study the geodesic motion of test
particles in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole with tidal charge.
We show that the effects of negative tidal charge tend to increase the horizon
radius, as well as the radii of the limiting photon orbit, the innermost bound
and the innermost stable circular orbits for both direct and retrograde motions
