    Developing an inter-university partnership: The importance of relationally-connected leaders

    We have been involved in an inter-university partnership that supports, contributes to, and influences our own and others’ thinking and actions. As we have collaborated on teaching, learning, and research in the field of educational leadership, we recognise that we have developed our own leadership practice and created opportunities for others to do so. The partnership in which academics and students from the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Waikato have been participating has evolved as a flexible and innovative endeavor over an eighteen month period. In this relatively brief time, we have discovered there are considerable possibilities for the partnership to be developed in a number of ways that will benefit academics, students, and our respective institutions. In this paper, we examine and discuss the findings generated by our initial inquiry as we seek to make sense of our inter university partnership in order to sustain and progress it. Our leadership during the initial phases of the partnership appears to have been a key element in its success. We have found that the presence of a relational connectedness has influenced and enhanced our own leadership practice and subsequently the quality of the partnership. It has enabled us to facilitate the growth of a community of practice and generate academic collaboration

    Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the Childhood Development Initiative's Mate-Tricks Pro-Social Behaviour After-School Programme

    Mate-Tricks is an after-school programme designed to promote pro-social behaviour in Tallaght West (Dublin). Tallaght West has been designated as an area of particular social and economic disadvantage with high levels of unemployment. Mate-Tricks is a bespoke intervention that combines elements of two pro-social behaviour programmes: the Strengthening Families Program (SFP) and Coping Power Program (CPP). The programme is a one-year multi-session after-school programme comprising 59 children-only sessions, 6 parent-only sessions and 3 family sessions, with each session lasting 1½ hours.The intended outcomes of this programme are stated as follows in the Mate-Tricks manual: enhance children's pro-social development; reduce children's anti-social behaviour; develop children's confidence and self-esteem; improve children's problem-solving skills; improve child-peer interactions; develop reasoning and empathy skills; improve parenting skills; improve parent/child interaction. This evaluation reports on the pilot of this programme. Of the 21 outcomes investigated, 19 showed no significant differences between the children who attended Mate-Tricks and the control group. However, there were 2 statistically significant effects of the Mate-Tricks programme and 3 other effects that approached significance. The lack of effects and the few negative effects found in this study replicates findings in several recent studies of after-school behaviour programmes

    Authorship, autobiography and the archive: Marilyn on Marilyn, television and documentary theory

    In 2004, documentary theorist Michael Renov described ‘the recent turn to filmic autobiography’ as ‘the defining trend of “post-verite” documentary practice...’ In 2008 Renov went further still, suggesting that ‘the very idea of autobiography challenges/reinvents the VERY IDEA of documentary.’ Archive based autobiographical filmmaking, meanwhile, is even more problematic for documentary theory. Indeed, a number of recent documentaries, because of their status somewhere in the spectrum between biography and autobiography, have prompted the construction of an entirely new conceptual category, deploying archival film, often in the form of home movies, to document the lives of their human subjects in Renov’s formulation ‘shared textual authority’. In this article I examine one of ‘my’ own archive based documentaries, ‘Marilyn on Marilyn’ (BBC2 2001), as a way of asking questions not just about biographical and autobiographical documentary but also - and perhaps more urgently - about attributions of authorship in archive-based documentary

    Pulsar Timing with the Fermi LAT

    We present an overview of precise pulsar timing using data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on Fermi. We describe the analysis techniques including a maximum likelihood method for determining pulse times of arrival from unbinned photon data.     The role of professional development and learning in the early adoption of the New Zealand curriculum by schools.

    This paper is set in the context of Phase One of the Ministry of Education Curriculum Implementation Exploratory Studies (CIES) project. The schools selected for this study were considered early adopters of the revised New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) (Ministry of Education, 2007). The paper provides theoretical insights and research evidence related to the role of professional development and learning in the early stages of implementation of the revised curriculum. A key finding common to most schools was the progressive development of a professional learning culture led by the principal that focused on pedagogy and student achievement prior to the introduction of the curriculum. The establishment of this culture involved processes that were task-oriented, reflective, consultative and collaborative. While there are strong parallels between the experiences of primary and secondary schools in the study, some important differences have also been noted

    Looking for Stars and Finding the Moon: Effects of Lunar Gamma-ray Emission on Fermi LAT Light Curves

    We are conducting a search for new gamma-ray binaries by making high signal-to-noise light curves of all cataloged Fermi LAT sources and searching for periodic variability using appropriately weighted power spectra. The light curves are created using a variant of aperture photometry where photons are weighted by the probability that they came from the source of interest. From this analysis we find that the light curves of a number of sources near the ecliptic plane are contaminated by gamma-ray emission from the Moon. This shows itself as modulation on the Moon's sidereal period in the power spectra. We demonstrate that this contamination can be removed by excluding times when the Moon was too close to a source. We advocate that this data screening should generally be used when analyzing LAT data from a source located close to the path of the Moon.Comment: 2012 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C12102

    The effects of lysophospholipids and oxidised low-density lipoproteins on the L-arginine: Nitric oxide pathways in isolated rabbit and rat aorta

    Elevated plasma levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic vessels from humans and animals show impaired endothelium-dependent relaxations (EDR) and altered responses to contractile agonists. Recent evidence suggests that oxidation of LDL is a key process in atherogenesis and plays an important role in the alterations in vascular reactivity. This study investigated the effects of a major component of oxidised LDL (OXLDL), lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), on vascular responses in isolated rabbit and rat aortic rings. In addition, the effects of OXLDL on EDR in rat aortic rings was also examined. Furthermore, the possibility that impaired EDR in atherosclerotic vessels could be restored by L-arginine was investigated. LPC caused immediate, dose dependent and partially reversible inhibition of EDR evoked by ACh, ATP and A23187 in rabbit aortic rings. This inhibition was decreased by serum albumin but not by L-arginine or indomethacin. Relaxations to exogenous NO and glyceryl trinitrate in endothelium-denuded tissues were unaffected by LPC, but responses were inhibited in endothelium-intact rings suggesting the release of an inhibitory factor from the endothelium. LPC also evokes EDR which are mediated by the release of NO. This dual effect of LPC can be demonstrated in the same tissue. Contractile responses to phenylephrine (PE) and 5-HT were unaffected in denuded tissues, but were inhibited in endothelium-intact tissues, again suggesting the release of a factor from the endothelium. Relaxations evoked by L-arginine in isolated rat aortic rings were mediated by an inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS). At a concentration that inhibited relaxations elicited by ACh, OXLDL did not influence L-arginine-evoked relaxations, whereas LPC potentiated responses. NOS activity induced in vivo by endotoxin injection, was studied ex vivo by observation of PE-evoked contractions. Contractions were attenuated in rings from endotoxin-treated rats. However, the effect of this treatment was unaffected by the presence of OXLDL or LPC. Aortic rings from WHHL rabbits which spontaneously develop atherosclerosis, showed impaired EDR. This impairment was not influenced by incubation of the tissues with L-arginine. Furthermore, rabbits fed a diet supplemented with L-arginine did not show improved endothelium- dependent responses in vitro. In addition, L-arginine feeding did not influence contractile responses to PE. In conclusion, LPC can modulate EDR and contractile responses in isolated tissues although, these effects do not mimic those reported for OXLDL. In contrast, OXLDL and LPC do not inhibit the activity of an inducible form of NOS. Finally, the impairment of EDR observed in atherosclerotic vessels cannot be reversed by the administration of L-arginine

    The association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic risk in children is mediated by abdominal adiposity: the HAPPY study

    Background: It is unclear whether cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is independently linked to cardiometabolic risk in children. This study investigated a) the association between CRF level and presence of cardiometabolic risk disorders using health-related cut points, and b) whether these associations were mediated by abdominal adiposity in children. Methods: This was a cross-sectional design study. Anthropometry, biochemical parameters and CRF were assessed in 147 schoolchildren (75 girls) aged 10-14 years. CRF was determined using a maximal cycle ergometer test. Children were classified as ‘fit’ or ‘unfit’ according to published thresholds. Logistic regression was used to investigate the odds of having individual and clustered cardiometabolic risk factors according to CRF level and whether abdominal adiposity mediated these associations. Results: Children classified as unfit had increased odds of presenting individual and clustered cardiometabolic risk factors (p 0.05). Conclusions: This study suggests that the association between CRF and cardiometabolic risk is mediated by abdominal adiposity in 10-14 year-old children and that abdominal adiposity may be a more important determinant of adverse cardiometabolic health in this age group

    Visfatin reduces gap junction mediated cell-to-cell communication in proximal tubule-derived epithelial cells

    Background/Aims: In the current study we examined if the adipocytokine, visfatin, alters connexin-mediated intercellular communication in proximal tubule-derived epithelial cells. Methods: The effects of visfatin (10-200ng/mL) on cell viability and cytotoxicity in HK2-cells were assessed by MTT, crystal violet and lactate dehydrogenase assays. Western blot analysis was used to confirm expression of Cx26, Cx40 and Cx43. The effect of visfatin (10-200ng/mL) on TGF-β1 secretion was confirmed by ELISA, and the effects of both TGF-β1 (2-10ng/mL) and visfatin (10-200ng/mL) on connexin expression were assessed by western blot. Functional intercellular communication was determined using transfer of Lucifer Yellow and paired-whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology. Results: In low glucose (5mM), visfatin (10-200ng/mL) did not affect membrane integrity, cytotoxicity or cell viability at 48hrs, but did evoke a concentration-dependent reduction in Cx26 and Cx43 expression. The expression of Cx40 was unaffected. At 48hrs, visfatin (10-200ng/mL) increased the secretion of TGF-β1 and the visfatin-evoked changes in connexin expression were mimicked by exogenous application of the pro-fibrotic cytokine (2-10ng/ml). Visfatin reduced dye transfer between coupled cells and decreased functional conductance, with levels falling by 63% as compared to control. Although input resistance was increased following visfatin treatment by 166%, the change was not significant as compared to control. The effects of visfatin on Cx-expression and cell-coupling were blocked in the presence of a TGF-β1 specific neutralizing antibody. Conclusions: The adipocytokine visfatin selectively evoked a non-toxic reduction in connexin expression in HK2-cells. The loss in gap-junction associated proteins was mirrored by a loss in functional conductance between coupled cells. Visfatin increased TGF-β secretion and the pattern of change for connexins expression was mimicked by exogenous application of TGF-β1. The effect of visfatin on Cx-expression and dye transfer were negated in the presence of a TGF-β1 neutralising antibody. These data suggest that visfatin reduces connexin-mediated intercellular communication in proximal tubule-derived epithelial cells via a TGF-β dependent pathway. Š 2013 S. Karger AG, Base
