    Liver actinomycosis mimicking liver tumor

    Background. The liver actinomycosis is a rare disease associated with complex differentiation from the liver metastases or hepatocellular carcinoma. Case report. A 50-year old immunocompetent female patient was admitted to the Surgical Department in an exhausted condition, with dyspnea, significant weight loss and intermittent fever in the recent two months. Diagnostic procedures that followed, including abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography led us to the diagnosis of metastatic liver disease of unknown etiology with pleural and pericardial effusion. Intraoperatively, the presence of liver pseudotumor without malignancy in the liver was confirmed. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of liver actinomycosis. Prolonged treatment with high dose penicillin was performed and all signs and symptoms resolved completely without further problems. The control abdominal ultrasound finding was normal. Conclusion. Liver actinomycosis has a nonspecific presentation, often mimicking liver tumor. A timely diagnosis as well as a combined surgical and antibiotic therapy is necessary in the treatment of patients with primary disease and prevention of complications

    Liver cystic echinococcosis in humans ā€” a study of 30 cases

    The aim of this study is to demonstrate the clinical manifestations and diagnostic approach to liver hydatid disease and suggest its treatment. The prospective study was carried out on 30 patients with liver hydatidosis. Hepatologic examinations were based on: medical history, physical examination, biochemical and serological tests, ultrasonography and computed tomography scanning. Twenty-five (83.3 %) patients underwent radical cyst resection, while in 5 (16.7 %) cases liver resection with left lobectomy was also performed. Hydatid cyst was histopathologically verified in all the patients. Our results showed that the patients with multiple cysts had impaired functional liver tests significantly more often than patients with unilocular cyst. In addition, ultrasonography and computed tomography scans are the valid imaging procedures in diagnosis. Radical, surgical resection of hepatic hydatid cysts is the goal of treatment

    We investigated the vascularization of the amygdala of the dog using various contrast agents injected into the internal carotid and vertebral artery. Subsequent clearance of the tissues gives us an opportunity to study the finest capillary network in the amygdala. The corticomedial part of the amygdala has a good vascularization given by the rostral and caudal choroid arteries. The rostral choroid gives off a rich capillary net to the nucleus centralis (NCE), its pars lateralis (NCEL) and pars medialis (NCEM). Nucleus medialis (NM) is poorly vascularized compared to the central nuclei. The massa intercalata (MI) also has a delicate artery around which there is a fine net of capillaries. Nucleus corticalis (NCO) and area enthorhinalis (AER) are better vascularized by the subpial blood vessel. The caudal choroid, a branch of the caudal cerebral artery is a source of subpial capillaries. The basolateral part of the amygdala is very well vascularized by the rostral choroid artery, a branch of the middle cerebral, especially the nucleus basolateralis (NBL) and nucleus lateralis posterior (NLP). The nucleus basomedialis (NBM) is poorly vascularize by the rostral choroid artery . The amygdala, is served by the middle cerebral artery, via its branch, the rostral choroid, and the caudal cerebral artery via its branch the caudal choroid artery. Every amygdala nucleus has its own central artery around which is formed a rich net of capillaries.Proučavanje vaskularizacije amigdale psa vrÅ”eno je upotrebom različitih kontrasnih sredstava injiciranih u a. carotis interna i a. vertebralis a prosvetljavanje tkiva daje mogućnost da se prouči i najfinija vaskularna mreža u amigdali. Kortikomedijalni deo amigdale vaskulariÅ”u a. choroidea rostralis i a. choroidea caudalis. A. choroidea rostralis, daje bogatu mrežu kapilara u NCE (nucleus centralis) i njegovom lateralnom i medijalnom delu (NCEL i NCEM). Nucleus medialis (NME) je slabije vaskularisan u poredjenju sa vaskularizacijom NCE. Massa intercalata (MI) je takodje snabdevena bogatom mrežom kapilara. A. choroidea caudalis, kao subpialna arterija, vaskulariÅ”e NCO (nucleus corticalis) i AER (area enthorhinalis). Bazolateralni deo amigdale vaskulariÅ”e samo a. choroid rostralis. Bogata mreža kapilara uočava se u NBL (nucleus basolateralis) i NLP (nucleus lateralis posterior) a neÅ”to siromaÅ”nija u NBM (nucleus basomedialis). Krv u amigdalu dovode dve arterije: a. choroidea rostralis, grana od a. cerebri media, i a. choroidea caudalis, grana od a. cerebri caudalis.     Bacground. Gastric adenomyoma is a rare, hamartomatous tumor localized most frequently in the gastric antrum. Review of the available literature shows only sporadic reports or smaller series. Case reports. We presented a 72-year-old woman admitted due to epigastric pain with dyspeptic difficulties. Biochemical parameters and tumor markers were within the referential limits. Diagnostic procedures (upper endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography and computerized tomography) revealed an intramural tumor prominence with intact mucosa on the posterior wall of gastric antrum, not accessible for biopsy. Surgical treatment was performed with total extirpation of the tumor. Histopathological examination verified adenomyoma with focal low grade epithelial dysplasia. Cytologic immunophenotype was consistent with smooth muscle stromal and epithelial tumor (CK7 and CK20 ++ immunophenotype). Stromal component revealed low proliferative index (Ki-67 protein immunoexpression level 3%), and p53 less than 0.1% in both epithelial and stromal components. Following the operation, the patient remained in good condition. Conclusion. Uncertain malignant potential of the gastric adenomyoma in the presented case indicates that timely diagnostics with adequate surgical treatment is crucial for an adequate treatment

    GENETIC DIVERSITY OF THE QUERCUS ROBUR L. POPULATION FROM THE PROTECTED AREA ā€žKOÅ UTNJAK FORESTā€ (BELGRADE, SERBIA) ASSESSED BY NUCLEAR MICROSATELLITES

    Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is one of the economically and ecologically most important deciduous forest tree species in Europe. In recent decades, there has been an evident decline of pedunculate oak forests, caused by various factors, such as climate change, site conditions, over-exploitation, or insufficient and inadequate regeneration. In Serbia, this species usually occurs in the valleys of major rivers (Danube, Sava, and Morava), and the most valuable pedunculate oak forests grow along the river Sava in the area of Srem, where there are individual specimens aged hundreds of years. The protected area ā€žKoÅ”utnjak Forestā€œ (Belgrade, Serbia), occupies 267 ha, with numerous forest tree species, among which are five native oak species, including the pedunculate oak. Oaks can be categorized as ā€žat-riskā€ species in ā€žKosutnjak Forestā€, since their populations are mostly represented by very old trees, with a poor possibility of natural rejuvenation. This research aimed to determine the genetic variability of the pedunculate oak population in the ā€žKoÅ”utnjak Forestā€ using nuclear microsatellites. DNA extraction was performed from young leaves, collected from 56 adult trees, using a commercial peqGOLD Plant DNA Mini Kit (PEQLAB). In total 13 nuclear microsatellites were used, and values of standard genetic diversity parameters were calculated using GenAlEx 6.5 software. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 8 (MSQ13 and PIE239) to 39 (QrZAG90), with an average of 17.538. The number of effective alleles per locus was in the range from 2,498 (QrZAG108) to 23.668 (QrZAG90), with an average of 8.360. The average value of the observed heterozygosity (Ho) was 0.705, and the average unbiased expected heterozygosity (uHe) was 0.818. A statistically significant deviation of the expected heterozygosity from the observed heterozygosity occurs at 5 loci (MAQ4, PIE239, QpZAG104, QrZAG108, and MSQ13). The average values of the fixation index were positive and statistically significant, indicating an excess of homozygotes. According to the assessment of the genetic status, determining the level of genetic variability of pedunculate oak served as a basis for defining in situ conservation measures for the available gene pool in ā€žKosutnjak Forestā€

    The antibiotic wastes in environment are very dangerous for human being because of the spread of epidemics due to increasing of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria. For reducing the proliferation of these bacteria, an environmental-friendly, cheap and non-toxic adsorbent, chitosan-grafted SiO2/Fe3O4, was developed in this study. The chitosan-grafted SiO2/Fe3O4 (Chi-SiO2/Fe3O4) nanoparticles were prepared and characterised by different physical and chemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and zeta-potential analysis. The prepared nanoparticles were used for ciprofloxacin (CPX) adsorption from water. The nonlinear Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were applied to experimental data. And Langmuir isotherm showed the best fit. The nonlinear pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models and Weber-Morris intraparticle diffusion model were applied to kinetic data. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. And the rate-limiting step was intraparticle diffusion step. The most suitable eluent for CPX desorption was determined as phosphate buffer solution rather than ethanol, and NaCl solution. It desorbed the 100% of CPX solution in 5h
