    TEACHER BELIEF AND PRACTICE IN A SCHOOL-BASED ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM IN EASTERN INDONESIA

    This study examines an English language teacher’s beliefs and practices within the context of implementation of school-based curriculum in Eastern Indonesia. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between teacher belief and practice in the school-based curriculum through two research questions: “What are the teacher’s beliefs about teaching English in a school-based curriculum setting?” and “How does the school-based curriculum influence the teacher’s beliefs and practices?”. This case study adopts purposeful sampling involving a volunteered public junior high school English language teacher. It derives its qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, observation field notes and lesson plans. It identifies two themes of this teacher’s belief: “pragmatic views of teaching” and “conformity to practice”. When the beliefs were examined in relation to the practices, another two themes emerged, and they were “negotiation between expectations and practices” and “tension between conformity and practice”. The findings of this study indicate that negotiation was a constant practice while teaching within the context of the school-based curriculum. Although the teacher demonstrated autonomy in classroom management and teaching strategies, the freedom was not extended to the selection of teaching materials and activities. The identified tensions between conformity and practice highlight issues in teacher readiness and teacher support on the implementation of school-based curriculum. Keywords: Classroom practice, English language teacher, Indonesia, school-based curriculum, teacher belief. Cite as: Too, W.     The Impacts of Harvesting Activities on Prey-Predator Fishery Model in the Presence of Toxin

    The present paper discusses a prey-predator fishery model where both species are subjected to harvesting effort. Both species release some toxic substances to each other. The prey species obeys the law of logistic growth. The model is a modified version from the classic Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model. The equilibria of the model are obtained and the dynamical behaviors of the proposed system are examined. Simulations of the model are performed and bifurcation diagrams are studied. The effects of harvesting and toxin on the stability of steady states are examined. In the present research, we found that the impact of harvesting activities is more influential on the dynamical behaviors in the fishery model than that of the toxin

    Field trials and test results of portable DVB-T systems with transmit delay diversity

    This paper describes work carried out by Brunel University and Broadreach Systems (UK) to quantify the advantages that can be achieved if Transmit Diversity is applied to systems employing the DVB standard. The techniques investigated can be applied to standard receiver equipment without modification. An extensive and carefully planned field trial was performed during the winter of 2007/2008 in Uxbridge (UK) to validate predictions from theoretical modeling and laboratory simulations. The transmissions were performed in the 730 MHz frequency band with a DVB-T transmitter and a mean power of 18.4dBW. Transmit delay diversity has been observed to deliver significant reception improvement in automotive and indoor- non line of sight situations

    Current Understanding of Streptococcal Urinary Tract Infection

    Group B streptococcus (GBS), also known as Streptococcus agalactiae is a Gram-positive, β-hemolytic, chain-forming bacterium and a commensal within the genital tract flora in approximately 25% of healthy adult women (Campbell et al., 2000). The organism is a leading cause of serious infection in newborns, pregnant women, and older persons with chronic medical illness (Baker et al., Edwards&Baker, 2005). In neonates GBS infection most commonly causes pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis. In addition to maternal cervicovaginal colonization and neonatal infection that can result from vertical transmission of GBS from mothers to their infants, the bacterium can also cause urinary tract infection (UTI). The spectrum of GBS UTI includes asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU), cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis, and urosepsis (Bronsema et al., 1993, Edwards&Baker, 2005, Farley et al., 1993, Lefevre et al., 1991, McKenna et al., 2003, Munoz et al., 1992, Ulett et al., 2009). GBS ABU is particularly common among pregnant women, although those most at risk for cystitis due to GBS appear to be elderly individuals (Edwards&Baker, 2005, Falagas et al., 2006, Muller et al., 2006). In addition to acute and asymptomatic UTI other invasive diseases caused by GBS infection include skin infections, bacteraemia, pneumonia, arthritis, and endocarditis (Liston et al., 1979, Patil & Martin, 2010, Tissi et al., 1997, Trivalle et al., 1998). Thus, GBS is considered unique in terms of its ability to cause a spectrum of diseases in newborns and adult humans and its ability to colonize the genital tract of healthy women in a commensal-type manner..

    Effectiveness of repair method using hybrid fiber reinforced polymer fabric on concrete-filled double skin steel tubular columns exposed to fire

    Concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) columns were often used in outdoor construction where fire is not a main concern. Therefore, this series of research deals with behaviour of CFDST columns after fire exposure, residual strength and method of repairing fire-damaged columns. This particular paper focused on the effectiveness of Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) repairing method. Total of 42 specimens were casted and 36 of the specimens were exposed to ASTM E-119 until the temperature of 600˚C. After that, the temperature was kept constant for 60 and 90 minutes. Out of 36 specimens that were exposed to fire, 24 of the specimens were repaired with FRP using hand lay-up method. All of the specimens (control, heated unrepaired and heated repaired) were subjected to concentric axial loading. It was found that by using Hybrid FRP, the ultimate strength at failure of repaired specimens greatly increased when compared to fire-damaged specimens to the extent of exceeding the control specimens. In addition, FRP is also effectively confined thinner outer steel tube than thicker outer steel tube. However, the effectiveness of Hybrid FRP repair method depends on several factor such as thickness of outer steel tube and maximum exposure time

    The Impact of multimorbidity burden, frailty risk scoring, and 3-directional morphological indices vs. testing for CSF responsiveness in normal pressure hydrocephalus

    Objective: Multimorbidity burden across disease cohorts and variations in clinico-radiographic presentations within normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) confound its diagnosis, and the assessment of its amenability to interventions. We hypothesized that novel imaging techniques such as 3-directional linear morphological indices could help in distinguishing between hydrocephalus vs. non-hydrocephalus and correlate with responsiveness to external lumbar drainage (CSF responsiveness) within NPH subtypes.Methodology: Twenty-one participants with NPH were recruited and age-matched to 21 patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and 21 healthy controls (HC) selected from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database. Patients with NPH underwent testing via the NPH programme with external lumbar drainage (ELD); pre- and post-ELD MRI scans were obtained. The modified Frailty Index (mFI-11) was used to stratify the NPH cohort, including Classic and Complex subtypes, by their comorbidity and frailty risks. The quantitative imaging network tool 3D Slicer was used to derive traditional 2-dimensional (2d) linear measures; Evans Index (EI), Bicaudate Index (BCI) and Callosal Angle (CA), along with novel 3-directional (3d) linear measures; z-Evans Index and Brain per Ventricle Ratio (BVR). 3-Dimensional (3D) ventricular volumetry was performed as an independent correlate of ventriculomegaly to CSF responsiveness.Results: Mean age for study participants was 71.14 ± 6.3 years (18, 85.7% males). The majority (15/21, 71.4%) of participants with NPH comprised the Complex subtype (overlay from vascular risk burden and AD); 12/21 (57.1%) were Non-Responders to ELD. Frailty alone was insufficient in distinguishing between NPH subtypes. By contrast, 3d linear measures distinguished NPH from both AD and HC cohorts, but also correlated to CSF responsiveness. The z-Evans Index was the most sensitive volumetric measure of CSF responsiveness (p = 0.012). Changes in 3d morphological indices across timepoints distinguished between Responders vs. Non-Responders to lumbar testing. There was a significant reduction of indices, only in Non-Responders and across multiple measures (z-Evans Index; p = 0.001, BVR at PC; p = 0.024). This was due to a significant decrease in ventricular measurement (p = 0.005) that correlated to independent 3D volumetry (p = 0.008).Conclusion. In the context of multimorbidity burden, frailty risks and overlay from neurodegenerative disease, 3d morphological indices demonstrated utility in distinguishing hydrocephalus vs. non-hydrocephalus and degree of CSF responsiveness. Further work may support the characterization of patients with Complex NPH who would best benefit from the risks of interventions

    PRED(TAP): a system for prediction of peptide binding to the human transporter associated with antigen processing

    BACKGROUND: The transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) is a critical component of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I antigen processing and presentation pathway. TAP transports antigenic peptides into the endoplasmic reticulum where it loads them into the binding groove of MHC class I molecules. Because peptides must first be transported by TAP in order to be presented on MHC class I, TAP binding preferences should impact significantly on T-cell epitope selection. DESCRIPTION: PRED(TAP )is a computational system that predicts peptide binding to human TAP. It uses artificial neural networks and hidden Markov models as predictive engines. Extensive testing was performed to valid the prediction models. The results showed that PRED(TAP )was both sensitive and specific and had good predictive ability (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve Aroc>0.85). CONCLUSION: PRED(TAP )can be integrated with prediction systems for MHC class I binding peptides for improved performance of in silico prediction of T-cell epitopes.
