    Transition to Graduate Level Elementary Teacher Preparation: A Formative Analysis

    This study provides a formative evaluation of the transition from a traditional four-year bachelor\u27s level elementary education program to a fifth year master of education (MEd) program on a regional campus of a major research university. For a three-year period the newly instituted MEd program ran concurrently with the bachelor\u27s certification program while this traditional program was being phased out. Comparisons of teaching placement rates for both groups indicated the MEd group had a placement rate twice as high as the bachelor\u27s graduates. Other factors analyzed include enrollment patterns, student profiles, staffing and cost implications, and relationships with teachers and administrators in the schools providing field and student teaching placements

    Healthy built environments: A review of the literature

    The Healthy Built Environments Program has completed a major scholarly literature review examining the role of the built environment in supporting human health as part of everyday living. The principal aim of the Review is to establish an evidence base that supports the development, prioritisation and implementation of healthy built environment policies and practices. The Review identifies current gaps in the evidence to inform future research directions. It includes an annotated bibliography of key research articles and a glossary of terms to assist practitioners, policy makers and researchers working in this interdisciplinary realm.  The focus of the Review is on the three key built environment domains that support human health: The Built Environment and Getting People Active. The Built Environment and Connecting and Strengthening Communities. The Built Environment and Providing Healthy Food Options. These built environment domains address three of the major risk factors for contemporary chronic disease - physical inactivity, social isolation and obesity.     Health and the Built Environment: Exploring Foundations for a New Interdisciplinary Profession

    The supportive role of the built environment for human health is a growing area of interdisciplinary research, evidence-based policy development, and related practice. Nevertheless, despite closely linked origins, the contemporary professions of public health and urban planning largely operate within the neoliberal framework of academic, political, and policy silos. A reinvigorated relationship between the two is fundamental to building and sustaining an effective “healthy built environment profession.” A recent comprehensive review of the burgeoning literature on healthy built environments identified an emergent theme which we have termed “Professional Development.” This literature relates to the development of relationships between health and built environment professionals. It covers case studies illustrating good practice models for policy change, as well as ways professionals can work to translate research into policy. Intertwined with this empirical research is a dialogue on theoretical tensions emerging as health and built environment practitioners and researchers seek to establish mutual understanding and respect. The nature of evidence required to justify policy change, for example, has surfaced as an area of asynchrony between accepted disciplinary protocols. Our paper discusses this important body of research with a view to initiating and supporting the ongoing development of an interdisciplinary profession of healthy planning

    Reducing physician voiding cystourethrogram ordering in children with first febrile urinary tract infection: evaluation of a purposefully sequenced educational intervention

    Background: Physicians often fail to implement clinical practice guidelines. Our aim was to evaluate whether a purposefully sequenced, multifaceted educational intervention would increase physician adherence to a guideline for voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) use following first urinary tract infection (UTI) in young children.  Methods: Using a single centre, pretest-posttest design, we compared the proportion of guideline adherent VCUG orders and the VCUG ordering rate before and after three educational interventions (interactive lecture, clinical pathway, faxed reminder) selected and sequenced according to the PRECEDE (Predisposing, Reinforcing and Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation) health promotion model.Results: One hundred and nine physicians ordered 219 VCUGs for 219 children. Following the interventions, there was an increase in the monthly proportion of adherent VCUGs ordered by pediatricians (analysis of variance (ANOVA) F(2,29) = 3.38, p = .048) and non-pediatricians (ANOVA F(2,28) = 14.71, p < .001). Also, pediatricians decreased their monthly VCUG ordering rate (linear trend incidence rate ratio 0.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.54, 0.99]). Pediatricians were more likely to adhere with the guideline than were non-pediatricians (odds ratio 2.91, 95% CI [1.5, 5.5]).Conclusion: Exposure to purposefully sequenced educational interventions based on the PRECEDE model was associated with increased adherence to guideline recommendations.

    Bringing history forward:learning from historical context when translating contemporary health evidence into planning practice

    We describe an historical review of planning documents related to a newly developing high-density locality in Sydney, Australia. The review was undertaken to support the translational component of a larger project investigating how best to include knowledge and experience from the health disciplines to ensure a way of living not hitherto commonplace in Australia is also health-supportive. This article presents (i) key findings from the historical data; (ii) associated learnings about practice, developed to assist the wider translational objectives; and (iii) observations on the potential for such historical reviews to inform better planning practice more broadly. </jats:p
