Supersolid state in fermionic optical lattice systems
We study ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in an optical lattice with
harmonic confinement by combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory
with a two-site impurity solver. By calculating the local particle density and
the pair potential in the systems with different clusters, we discuss the
stability of a supersolid state, where an s-wave superfluid coexists with a
density-wave state of checkerboard pattern. It is clarified that a confining
potential plays an essential role in stabilizing the supersolid state. The
phase diagrams are obtained for several effective particle densities.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Phys. Rev. A in pres
Finite-temperature Mott transitions in multi-orbital Hubbard model
We investigate the Mott transitions in the multi-orbital Hubbard model at
half-filling by means of the self-energy functional approach. The phase
diagrams are obtained at finite temperatures for the Hubbard model with up to
four-fold degenerate bands. We discuss how the first-order Mott transition
points and as well as the critical temperature depend
on the orbital degeneracy. It is elucidated that enhanced orbital fluctuations
play a key role to control the Mott transitions in the multi-orbital Hubbard
model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition of β-FeSi2 on β-FeSi2 seed crystals formed on Si substrates
We have fabricated a β-FeSi2 film by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on a Si(001) substrate with β-FeSi2 seed crystals grown by molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the crystallinity, surface morphology and temperature dependence of photoresponse properties of the β-FeSi2 film. The surface of the grown β-FeSi2 film was atomically flat, and step-and-terrace structure was clearly observed. Multi-domain structure of β-FeSi2 whose average size was approximately 200 nm however was revealed. The photoresponse was obtained in an infrared light region (~ 0.95 eV) at temperatures below 200 K. The external quantum efficiency reached a maximum, being as large as 25% at 100 K when a bias voltage was 2.0 V
Anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

The granulocyte-colony stimulating factor-producing tumor was first reported in 1977, however, anaplastic pleomorphic type carcinoma of the pancreas producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor is still rare.

Case presentation

A 63-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with body weight loss (-10 kg during months) and upper abdominal pain from 3 weeks. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a pancreatic tumor 10 cm in size and multiple low-density areas in the liver. On admission, the peripheral leukocyte count was elevated to 91,500/mm3 and the serum concentration of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor was 134 pg/mL (normal, < 18.1 pg/mL). Based on liver biopsy findings, the tumor was classified as an anaplastic pleomorphic-type carcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining showed that pancreatic carcinoma cells were positive for granulocyte-colony stimulating factor. The patient developed interstitial pneumonia, probably caused by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, and died 11 days after admission.

Conclusion

This is a rare case report of anaplastic pleomorphic-type carcinoma of the pancreas producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and confirmed by immunohistochemistry.</p

Lung Adenocarcinoma Size Decrease after SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination during Long-Term Pembrolizumab Treatment: A Case Report
A man in his late 40s was diagnosed with clinical stage 4B lung adenocarcinoma with a PD-L1 tumor proportion score of 100% and high tumor mutational burden. A partial response was achieved after administration of pembrolizumab. The patient received two doses of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (BNT162b2) after 59 courses, and a chest computed tomography revealed consolidation in the peri-tumoral area, which subsequently disappeared, and the tumor continued to shrink in the next 4 months. This case provides indirect evidence for the persistence of cancer immunity during long-term treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors and the potential for further activation

Reocclusion after Self-Expandable Metallic Stent Placement for Relieving Malignant Colorectal Obstruction as a Palliative Treatment
Self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) placement has been practiced in several hospitals in Japan, including ours, since January 2012. Here, we report the case of an 82-year-old Japanese man who presented to the hospital with a 1-week history of right hypochondrial pain. Computed tomography (CT) findings indicated colorectal cancer. The laboratory findings on admission indicated severe anemia (red blood cell count, 426 × 104/μL; hemoglobin, 7.9 g/dL). We performed SEMS placement because the patient refused to undergo surgery. He did not attend any of the scheduled follow-up visits after SEMS placement. However, a year and a half after the SEMS placement, the patient attended the hospital because of difficulty in passing stool. A plain abdominal CT scan showed bowel reobstruction due to the ascending colon cancer after SEMS placement. We performed an emergency operation, ascending colostomy, on the same day. Colorectal stent placement may be a good treatment option for patients who refuse to undergo conventional therapeutic treatments or in those with unresectable colorectal cancer. Patients should be carefully followed up every few months after SEMS placement because of the risk of reocclusion
