    The Distribution of Rents in Supply Chain Industries: The Case of High Oil Corn

    Value-enhanced crops (VEC's) have been the focus of "second-generation" genetically modified (GM) crops. The market power granted by intellectual property rights (IPR) and the use of contractual arrangements in VEC gene and seed production have fostered a move toward tightly-aligned supply chain industries. This paper suggests and tests an analytical methodology for examining a number of issues in tightly-aligned supply chain industries: (1) the distributions of potential monopolistic and monopsonistic rents, (2) choices of licensing intellectual property versus in-house seed production and distribution (3) implications of alternative marketing strategies and elasticities of demand on the magnitudes of rents, and (4) determining impacts on different stages within the supply chain and on substitute commodities.     The driving force behind the growth of the agricultural biotechnology industry is the potential to increase efficiency in the production of commodities and to provide benefits to consumers and producers as well as profits for industry. Value-enhancedh genetically modified crops have the potential to provide new momentum to the industry. Using the US high-oil corn (HOC) industry as a case study, welfare measures indicate that those benefiting from HOC are HOC seed suppliers and conventional seed suppliers.     More than 70% of low-sale family farms are operating on a profit margin of less than 10%, which signals a critical concern for the economic sustainability of limited-resourced farms. It is also important to note that most low-income farmers combine off- and on-farm income. More than 80% of low-sale farmers work off the farm, as well as 62% of their spouses (Hoppe, 2015). High tunnels (akin to greenhouses) are versatile in production location, seasonality, quantity, quality, and length of cropping season, and appear to be promising for small-scale farmer economic viability (USDA, 2022)
