Intermittent magnetic field excitation by a turbulent flow of liquid sodium
The magnetic field measured in the Madison Dynamo Experiment shows
intermittent periods of growth when an axial magnetic field is applied. The
geometry of the intermittent field is consistent with the fastest growing
magnetic eigenmode predicted by kinematic dynamo theory using a laminar model
of the mean flow. Though the eigenmodes of the mean flow are decaying, it is
postulated that turbulent fluctuations of the velocity field change the flow
geometry such that the eigenmode growth rate is temporarily positive.
Therefore, it is expected that a characteristic of the onset of a turbulent

Measurements of the magnetic field induced by a turbulent flow of liquid metal
Initial results from the Madison Dynamo Experiment provide details of the
inductive response of a turbulent flow of liquid sodium to an applied magnetic
field. The magnetic field structure is reconstructed from both internal and
external measurements. A mean toroidal magnetic field is induced by the flow
when an axial field is applied, thereby demonstrating the omega effect.
Poloidal magnetic flux is expelled from the fluid by the poloidal flow.
Small-scale magnetic field structures are generated by turbulence in the flow.
The resulting magnetic power spectrum exhibits a power-law scaling consistent
with the equipartition of the magnetic field with a turbulent velocity field.
The magnetic power spectrum has an apparent knee at the resistive dissipation
scale. Large-scale eddies in the flow cause significant changes to the
instantaneous flow profile resulting in intermittent bursts of non-axisymmetric
magnetic fields, demonstrating that the transition to a dynamo is not smooth

A review of metrology in lithium-ion electrode coating processes
Lithium-ion battery electrode design and manufacture is a multi-faceted process where the link between underlying physical processes and manufacturing outputs is not yet fully understood. This is in part due to the many parameters and variables involved and the lack of complete data sets under different processing conditions. The slurry coating step has significant implications for electrode design and advanced metrology offers opportunities to improve understanding and control at this stage. Here, metrology options for slurry coating are reviewed as well as opportunities for in-line integration, discussing the benefits of combining advanced metrology to provide comprehensive characterisation, improve understanding and feed into predictive design models. There is a comprehensive range of metrology which needs little improvement to provide the relevant quantifiable measures during coating, with one exception of particle sizing, where more precise, in-line measurement would be beneficial. However, there is a lack of studies that bring together the latest advancements in electrode coating metrology which is crucial to understanding the interdependency of myriad processing and product parameters. This review highlights the need for a comprehensive metrological picture whose value would be much greater than the sum of its parts for the next generation of multiphysics and data-driven models
Prevention of childhood poisoning in the home: overview of systematic reviews and a systematic review of primary studies
Unintentional poisoning is a significant child public health problem. This systematic overview of reviews, supplemented with a systematic review of recently published primary studies synthesizes evidence on non-legislative interventions to reduce childhood poisonings in the home with particular reference to interventions that could be implemented by Children's Centres in England or community health or social care services in other high income countries. Thirteen systematic reviews, two meta-analyses and 47 primary studies were identified. The interventions most commonly comprised education, provision of cupboard/drawer locks, and poison control centre (PCC) number stickers. Meta-analyses and primary studies provided evidence that interventions improved poison prevention practices. Twenty eight per cent of studies reporting safe medicine storage (OR from meta-analysis 1.57, 95% CI 1.22–2.02), 23% reporting safe storage of other products (OR from meta-analysis 1.63, 95% CI 1.22–2.17) and 46% reporting availability of PCC numbers (OR from meta-analysis 3.67, 95% CI 1.84–7.33) demonstrated significant effects favouring the intervention group. There was a lack of evidence that interventions reduced poisoning rates. Parents should be provided with poison prevention education, cupboard/drawer locks and emergency contact numbers to use in the event of a poisoning. Further research is required to determine whether improving poison prevention practices reduces poisoning rates
Dynamic exchange of myosin VI on endocytic structures.
The actin-based molecular motor myosin VI functions in the endocytic uptake pathway, both during the early stages of clathrin-mediated uptake and in later transport to/from early endosomes. This study uses fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) to examine the turnover rate of myosin VI during endocytosis. The results demonstrate that myosin VI turns over dynamically on endocytic structures with a characteristic half-life common to both the large insert isoform of myosin VI on clathrin-coated structures and the no-insert isoform on early endosomes. This half-life is shared by the myosin VI-binding partner Dab2 and is identical for full-length myosin VI and the cargo-binding tail region. The 4-fold slower half-life of an artificially dimerized construct of myosin VI on clathrin-coated structures suggests that wild type myosin VI does not function as a stable dimer, but either as a monomer or in a monomer/dimer equilibrium. Taken together, these FRAP results offer insight into both the basic turnover dynamics and the monomer/dimer nature of myosin VI
Physical restraint in residential child care : the experiences of young people and residential workers
There have long been concerns about the use of physical restraint in residential care. This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study which explores the experiences of children, young people and residential workers about physical restraint. The research identifies the dilemmas and ambiguities for both staff and young people, and participants discuss the situations where they feel physical restraint is appropriate as well as their concerns about unjustified or painful restraints. They describe the negative emotions involved in restraint but also those situations where, through positive relationships and trust, restraint can help young people through unsafe situations
Observation of a Turbulence-Induced Large Scale Magnetic Field
An axisymmetric magnetic field is applied to a spherical, turbulent flow of
liquid sodium. An induced magnetic dipole moment is measured which cannot be
generated by the interaction of the axisymmetric mean flow with the applied
field, indicating the presence of a turbulent electromotive force. It is shown
that the induced dipole moment should vanish for any axisymmetric laminar flow.
Also observed is the production of toroidal magnetic field from applied
poloidal magnetic field (the omega-effect). Its potential role in the

Crystal plasticity as an indicator of the viscous-brittle transition in magmas
Understanding the flow of multi-phase (melt, crystals and bubbles) magmas is of great importance for interpreting eruption dynamics. Here we report the first observation of crystal plasticity, identified using electron backscatter diffraction, in plagioclase in andesite dome lavas from Volcán de Colima, Mexico. The same lavas, deformed experimentally at volcanic conduit temperature and load conditions, exhibit a further, systematic plastic response in the crystalline fraction, observable as a lattice misorientation. At higher stress, and higher crystal fraction, the amount of strain accommodated by crystal plasticity is larger. Crystal plastic distortion is highest in the intact segments of broken crystals, which have exceeded their plastic limit. We infer that crystal plasticity precludes failure and can punctuate the viscous-brittle transition in crystal-bearing magmas at certain shallow magmatic conditions. Since crystal plasticity varies systematically with imposed conditions, this raises the possibility that it may be used as a strain marker in well-constrained systems
Hyperfine structure of the state of AlCl and its relevance to laser cooling and trapping
The majority of molecules proposed for laser cooling and trapping experiments
have -type ground states. Specifically, states have cycling
transitions analogous to D1-lines in alkali-metal atoms while states
offer both strong and weak cycling transitions analogous to those in
alkaline-earth atoms. Despite this proposed variety, to date, only molecules
with -type ground states have successfully been confined and cooled
in magneto-optical traps. While none of the proposed -type molecules
have been successfully laser cooled and trapped, they are expected to have
various advantages in terms of exhibiting a lower chemical reactivity and an
internal structure that benefits the cooling schemes. Here, we present the
prospects and strategies for optical cycling in AlCl -- a molecule
-- and report on the characterization of the state hyperfine
structure. Based on these results, we carry out detailed simulations on the
expected capture velocity of a magneto-optical trap for AlCl. Finally, using
{\it ab initio} calculations, we identify the photodissociation via a
state and photoionization process via the state as possible loss
