Feed Planning - Methods Used by âExpertâ Farmers
Although formal feed planning has been heavily promoted in New Zealand, relatively few farmers have adopted this approach (Nuthall & Bishop-Hurley, 1999). Reasons for non-adoption have been identified, but little is known about how farmers manage their pastoral farms in the absence of formal feed planning. Management of Pasture Quality for Sheep on New Zealand Hill Country
The control of pasture quality over spring is central to the achievement of high levels of sheep performance on hill country. Despite this, with the exception of the work of Lambert et al. (2000), little is known about how farmers actually manage pasture quality. The purpose of this research was to describe how a high performing hill country farmer manages pasture quality on their sheep area over spring and from this develop a framework that will assist other farmers improve their pasture management
High resolution measurements of the switching current in a Josephson tunnel junction: Thermal activation and macroscopic quantum tunneling
We have developed a scheme for a high resolution measurement of the switching
current distribution of a current biased Josephson tunnel junction using a
timing technique. The measurement setup is implemented such that the digital
control and read-out electronics are optically decoupled from the analog bias
electronics attached to the sample. We have successfully used this technique to
measure the thermal activation and the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the
phase in a small Josephson tunnel junction with a high experimental resolution.
This technique may be employed to characterize current-biased Josephson tunnel

Red Galaxy Growth and the Halo Occupation Distribution
We have traced the past 7 Gyr of red galaxy stellar mass growth within dark
matter halos. We have determined the halo occupation distribution, which
describes how galaxies reside within dark matter halos, using the observed
luminosity function and clustering of 40,696 0.2<z<1.0 red galaxies in Bootes.
Half of 10^{11.9} Msun/h halos host a red central galaxy, and this fraction
increases with increasing halo mass. We do not observe any evolution of the
relationship between red galaxy stellar mass and host halo mass, although we
expect both galaxy stellar masses and halo masses to evolve over cosmic time.
We find that the stellar mass contained within the red population has doubled
since z=1, with the stellar mass within red satellite galaxies tripling over
this redshift range. In cluster mass halos most of the stellar mass resides
within satellite galaxies and the intra-cluster light, with a minority of the
stellar mass residing within central galaxies. The stellar masses of the most
luminous red central galaxies are proportional to halo mass to the power of a
third. We thus conclude that halo mergers do not always lead to rapid growth of
central galaxies. While very massive halos often double in mass over the past 7
Gyr, the stellar masses of their central galaxies typically grow by only 30%.Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ. 34 pages, 22 Figures, 5 Table
The system parameters of DW Ursae Majoris
We present new constraints on the system parameters of the SW Sextantis star
DW Ursae Majoris, based on ultraviolet (UV) eclipse observations with the
Hubble Space Telescope. Our data were obtained during a low state of the
system, in which the UV light was dominated by the hot white dwarf (WD)
primary. Eclipse analysis, using the full Roche lobe geometry, allows us to set
firm limits on the masses and radii of the system components and the distance
between them: 0.67 \leq M_1/M_sun \leq 1.06, 0.008 \leq R_1/R_sun \leq 0.014,
M_2/M_sun > 0.16, R_2/R_sun > 0.28 and a/R_sun > 1.05. For q = M_2/M_1 < 1.5
the inclination must satisfy i > 71 degrees. Using Smith & Dhillon's
mass-period relation for CV secondaries, our estimates for the system
parameters become M_1/M_sun = 0.77 \pm 0.07, R_1/R_sun = 0.012 \pm 0.001,
M_2/M_sun = 0.30 \pm 0.10, R_2/R_sun = 0.34 \pm 0.04, q =0.39 \pm 0.12, i = 82
\pm 4 degrees and a/R_sun = 1.14 \pm 0.06. We have also estimated the spectral
type of the secondary, M3.5 \pm 1.0, and distance to the system, d =930 \pm 160
pc, from time-resolved I- and K-band photometry. Finally, we have repeated
Knigge et al.'s WD model atmosphere fit to the low-state UV spectrum of DW UMa
in order to account for the higher surface gravity indicated by our eclipse
analysis. In this way we obtained a second estimate for the distance, d = 590
\pm 100 pc, which allows us to obtain a second estimate for the spectral type
of the secondary, M7 \pm 2.0. We conclude that the true value for the distance
and spectral type will probably be in between the values obtained by the two

Distances to Galactic high-velocity clouds. I. Cohen Stream, complex GCP, cloud g1
The high- and intermediate-velocity interstellar clouds (HVCs/IVCs) are
tracers of energetic processes in and around the Milky Way. Clouds with
near-solar metallicity about one kpc above the disk trace the circulation of
material between disk and halo (the Galactic Fountain). The Magellanic Stream
consists of gas tidally extracted from the SMC, tracing the dark matter
potential of the Milky Way. Several other HVCs have low-metallicity and appear
to trace the continuing accretion of infalling intergalactic gas. These
assertions are supported by the metallicities (0.1 to 1 solar) measured for
about ten clouds in the past decade. Direct measurements of distances to HVCs
have remained elusive, however. In this paper we present four new distance
brackets, using VLT observations of interstellar \CaII H and K absorption
toward distant Galactic halo stars. We derive distance brackets of 5.0 to 11.7
kpc for the Cohen Stream (likely to be an infalling low-metallicity cloud), 9.8
to 15.1 kpc for complex GCP (also known as the Smith Cloud or HVC40-15+100 and
with still unknown origin), 1.0 to 2.7 kpc for an IVC that appears associated
with the return flow of the Fountain in the Perseus Arm, and 1.8 to 3.8 kpc for
cloud g1, which appears to be in the outflow phase of the Fountain. Our
measurements further demonstrate that the Milky Way is accreting substantial
amounts of gaseous material, which influences the Galaxy's current and future
dynamical and chemical evolution.Comment: Accepted by Ap
Aripiprazole/Sertraline Combination: Clinical and Cost-Effectiveness in Comparison With Quetiapine for the Treatment of Bipolar Depression (ASCEnD Trial)âProtocol for a Nested Qualitative Study
\ua9 2024 The Author(s). Health Expectations published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Introduction: Bipolar disorder is a recurrent mental health disorder with a prevalence rate of 1.4%. On average, there can be a delay of 9.5 years from the initial presentation of symptoms to a confirmed diagnosis. Individuals living with bipolar disorder have a reduced life expectancy. There is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of antidepressants in treating bipolar disorder. The ASCEnD clinical trial will test the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the aripiprazole/sertraline combination in comparison with quetiapine for the treatment of bipolar depression (individuals who suffer from depressive episodes in bipolar disorder) and will include a nested qualitative study. Methods: The qualitative study will use semi-structured interviews to explore pilot trial participants\u27 and clinicians\u27 perspectives on recruitment procedures, the acceptability of the intervention, the management of bipolar disorder and attitudes to medication combinations. Conclusion: Findings will inform recruitment strategies and optimise training for the participating sites in the ASCEnD full trial. They will also help to illuminate the lived experience of people with bipolar disorder and the clinicians who work with people with bipolar disorder. The discussion will explore perspectives on the delay in diagnosis, having a diagnosis, the impact of living with bipolar disorder and attitudes to treatment, including drug combinations. Patient or Public Contribution: A Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) has been convened with the support of the McPin Foundation, which will contribute to the ASCEnD trial and its nested qualitative study to provide input on the design and delivery of the trial and qualitative study, analysis of qualitative data and dissemination of findings
Superhumps in Cataclysmic Binaries. XXV. q_crit, epsilon(q), and Mass-Radius
We report on successes and failures in searching for positive superhumps in
cataclysmic variables, and show the superhumping fraction as a function of
orbital period. Basically, all short-period systems do, all long-period systems
don't, and a 50% success rate is found at P_orb=3.1+-0.2 hr. We can use this to
measure the critical mass ratio for the creation of superhumps. With a
mass-radius relation appropriate for cataclysmic variables, and an assumed mean
white-dwarf mass of 0.75 M_sol, we find a mass ratio q_crit=0.35+-0.02.
We also report superhump studies of several stars of independently known mass
ratio: OU Virginis, XZ Eridani, UU Aquarii, and KV UMa (= XTE J1118+480). The
latter two are of special interest, because they represent the most extreme
mass ratios for which accurate superhump measurements have been made. We use
these to improve the epsilon(q) calibration, by which we can infer the elusive
q from the easy-to-measure epsilon (the fractional period excess of P_superhump
over P_orb). This relation allows mass and radius estimates for the secondary
star in any CV showing superhumps. The consequent mass-radius law shows an
apparent discontinuity in radius near 0.2 M_sol, as predicted by the disrupted
magnetic braking model for the 2.1-2.7 hour period gap. This is effectively the

Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers and quantum dot lasers
The use of cavity to manipulate photon emission of quantum dots (QDs) has
been opening unprecedented opportunities for realizing quantum functional
nanophotonic devices and also quantum information devices. In particular, in
the field of semiconductor lasers, QDs were introduced as a superior
alternative to quantum wells to suppress the temperature dependence of the
threshold current in vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers
(VECSELs). In this work, a review of properties and development of
semiconductor VECSEL devices and QD laser devices is given. Based on the
features of VECSEL devices, the main emphasis is put on the recent development
of technological approach on semiconductor QD VECSELs. Then, from the viewpoint
of both single QD nanolaser and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), a
single-QD-cavity system resulting from the strong coupling of QD cavity is
presented. A difference of this review from the other existing works on
semiconductor VECSEL devices is that we will cover both the fundamental aspects
and technological approaches of QD VECSEL devices. And lastly, the presented
review here has provided a deep insight into useful guideline for the
development of QD VECSEL technology and future quantum functional nanophotonic

Bronchial Thermoplasty Induced Airway Smooth Muscle Reduction and Clinical Response in Severe Asthma:The TASMA Randomized Trial
RATIONALE: Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT) is a bronchoscopic treatment for severe asthma targeting airway smooth muscle (ASM). Observational studies have shown ASM mass reduction after BT but appropriate control groups are lacking. Furthermore, as treatment response is variable, identifying optimal candidates for BT treatment is important. AIMS: First, to assess the effect of BT on ASM mass and second, to identify patient characteristics that correlate with BT-response. METHODS: Severe asthma patients (n=40) were randomized to immediate (n=20) or delayed (n=20) BT-treatment. Prior to randomization, clinical, functional, blood and airway biopsy data were collected. In the delayed control group, re-assessment, including biopsies, was performed after 6 months of standard clinical care, followed by BT. In both groups, post-BT data including biopsies were obtained after 6 months. ASM mass (% positive desmin or α-smooth muscle actin area in the total biopsy) was calculated with automated digital analyses software. Associations between baseline characteristics and Asthma Control and Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (ACQ/AQLQ) improvement were explored. RESULTS: Median ASM mass decreased by >50% in the immediate BT group (n=17) versus no change in the delayed control group (n=19) (p=0.0004). In the immediate group ACQ scores improved with -0.79 (-1.61;0.02 IQR) compared to 0.09 (-0.25;1.17 IQR) in the delayed group (p=0.006). AQLQ scores improved with 0.83 (-0.15;1.69 IQR) versus -0.02 (-0.77;0.75 IQR) (p=0.04). Treatment response in the total group (n=35) was positively associated with serum IgE and eosinophils, but not with baseline ASM mass. CONCLUSION: ASM mass significantly decreases after BT when compared to a randomized non-BT treated control group. Treatment response was associated with serum IgE and eosinophil levels but not with ASM mass. Clinical trial registration available at www.clinicaltrials.gov, ID:NCT0222539
