Consolidated report of DEISA case studies

    Get PDF
DEISA (Diversity and Equity Interventions in South Africa) was a research programme which studied the transformation "industry" in South Africa, exploring issues such as the kinds of interventions. The content of this report has been used as part of the Diversity Studies MPhil Programme at the University of Cape Town. Specifically, it has been used for the course "Diversity Implementation and Practice", a course which introduces students to the strategies used, and challenges faced by, diversity practitioners in South Africa. This report could also be useful for the study of human resource management and industrial sociology in post-apartheid South Africa

Plastic and evolved responses to global change: What can we learn from comparative transcriptomics?

© The American Genetic Association. 2015. All rights reserved. Physiological plasticity and adaptive evolution may facilitate persistence in a changing environment. As a result, there is an interest in understanding species\u27 capacities for plastic and evolved responses, and the mechanisms by which these responses occur. Transcriptome sequencing has become a powerful tool for addressing these questions, providing insight into otherwise unobserved effects of changing conditions on organismal physiology and variation in these effects among individuals and populations. Here, we review recent studies using comparative transcriptomics to understand plastic and evolutionary responses to changing environments. We focus on 2 areas where transcriptomics has played an important role: first, in understanding the genetic basis for local adaptation to current gradients as a proxy for future adaptation, and second, in understanding organismal responses to multiple stressors. We find most studies examining multiple stressors have tested the effects of each stressor individually; the few studies testing multiple stressors simultaneously have found synergistic effects on gene expression that would not have been predicted from single stressor studies. We discuss the importance of robust experimental design to allow for a more sophisticated characterization of transcriptomic responses and conclude by offering recommendations for future research, including integrating genomics with transcriptomics, testing gene regulatory networks, and comparing the equivalence of transcription to translation and the effects of environmental stress on the proteome

Effects of Estrogen and Bisphenol-A Exposure During Adolescent Development: A Behavioral Analysis

    Get PDF
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a known endocrine disruptor found in a variety of objects including hard plastic products, epoxy resin linings of canned food, and water/beverage containers. BPA exposure during adolescent development increases anxiety and impairs spatial memory when measured in rats. BPA interacts with Estrogen (E), which is known to be neuroprotective and enhances memory. The current study was designed to examine (1) whether exposure to BPA or E during adolescence would alter behaviors when measured in adulthood and (2) compare the similarity of any BPA and E effects. Female rats were ovariectomized at postnatal day (PND) 21 and received either placebo, BPA, or E injections during adolescence (PND 42-49). In adulthood, starting PND 77, subjects were tested for anxiety (elevated plus maze), locomotor activity (open field), spatial memory (object placement), and non-spatial visual memory (object recognition). BPA exposed rats demonstrated a physiological effect of increased weight gain over time, whereas E displayed less weight gain over time. Surprisingly, there were no significant group differences on any of the behavioral measures. Given that both BPA and E alter adult behaviors, this data suggest that the profound neural alterations occurring during adolescence may mask potential BPA and/or E induced behavioral alterations. Certainly further studies are warranted

Can AI Become an Information Literacy Ally? A Survey of Library Instructor Perspectives on ChatGPT

    Get PDF
Libraries can play a role in navigating the AI era by integrating these tools into information literacy (IL) programs. To implement generative AI tools like ChatGPT effectively, it is important to understand the attitudes of library professionals involved in IL instruction toward this tool and their intention to use it for instruction. This study explored perceptions of ChatGPT using survey data that included acceptance factors and potential uses derived from the emerging literature. While some librarians saw potential, others found it too unreliable to be useful; yet the vast majority imagined utilizing the tool in the future
