Robust single-parameter quantized charge pumping
This paper investigates a scheme for quantized charge pumping based on
single-parameter modulation. The device was realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs gated
nanowire. We find a remarkable robustness of the quantized regime against
variations in the driving signal, which increases with applied rf power. This
feature together with its simple configuration makes this device a potential
module for a scalable source of quantized current.Comment: Submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
RNA ligands selected by cleavage stimulation factor contain distinct sequence motifs that function as downstream elements in 3'-end processing of pre-mRNA
Critical events in 3'-end processing of pre-mRNA are the recognition of the AAUAAA polyadenylation signal by cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF) and the binding of cleavage stimulation factor (CstF) via its 64-kDa subunit to the downstream element. The stability of this CPSF.CstF.RNA complex is thought to determine the efficiency of 3'-end processing. Since downstream elements reveal high sequence variability, in vitro selection experiments with highly purified CstF were performed to investigate the sequence requirements for CstF-RNA interaction. CstF was purified from calf thymus and from HeLa cells. Surprisingly, calf thymus CstF contained an additional, novel form of the 64-kDa subunit with a molecular mass of 70 kDa. RNA ligands selected by HeLa and calf thymus CstF contained three highly conserved sequence elements as follows: element 1 (AUGCGUUCCUCGUCC) and two closely related elements, element 2a (YGUGUYN0-4UUYAYUGYGU) and element 2b (UUGYUN0-4AUUUACU(U/G)N0-2YCU). All selected sequences tested functioned as downstream elements in 3'-end processing in vitro. A computer survey of the EMBL data library revealed significant homologies to all selected elements in naturally occurring 3'-untranslated regions. The majority of element 2a homologies was found downstream of coding sequences. Therefore, we postulate that this element represents a novel consensus sequence for downstream elements in 3'-end processing of pre-mRNA
Arrays of Josephson junctions in an environment with vanishing impedance
The Hamiltonian operator for an unbiased array of Josephson junctions with
gate voltages is constructed when only Cooper pair tunnelling and charging
effects are taken into account. The supercurrent through the system and the
pumped current induced by changing the gate voltages periodically are discussed
with an emphasis on the inaccuracies in the Cooper pair pumping.
Renormalisation of the Hamiltonian operator is used in order to reliably
parametrise the effects due to inhomogeneity in the array and non-ideal gating
sequences. The relatively simple model yields an explicit, testable prediction
based on three experimentally motivated and determinable parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, uses RevTeX and epsfig, Revised version, Better

Oxygen-isotope effect on the superconducting gap in the cuprate superconductor Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}
The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the zero-temperature
superconducting energy gap \Delta_0 was studied for a series of
Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} samples (0.0\leq x\leq0.45). The OIE on
\Delta_0 was found to scale with the one on the superconducting transition
temperature. These experimental results are in quantitative agreement with
predictions from a polaronic model for cuprate high-temperature superconductors
and rule out approaches based on purely electronic mechanisms.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
A cluster mode-coupling approach to weak gelation in attractive colloids
Mode-coupling theory (MCT) predicts arrest of colloids in terms of their
volume fraction, and the range and depth of the interparticle attraction. We
discuss how effective values of these parameters evolve under cluster
aggregation. We argue that weak gelation in colloids can be idealized as a
two-stage ergodicity breaking: first at short scales (approximated by the bare
MCT) and then at larger scales (governed by MCT applied to clusters). The
competition between arrest and phase separation is considered in relation to
recent experiments. We predict a long-lived `semi-ergodic' phase of mobile
clusters, showing logarithmic relaxation close to the gel line.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Cretaceous-to-recent record of elevated 3He/4He along the Hawaiian-Emperor volcanic chain
Helium isotopes are a robust geochemical tracer of a primordial mantle component in hot spot volcanism. The high 3He/4He (up to 35 RA, where RA is the atmospheric 3He/4He ratio of 1.39 × 10−6) of some Hawaiian Island volcanism is perhaps the classic example. New results for picrites and basalts from the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain indicate that the hot spot has produced high 3He/4He lavas for at least the last 76 million years. Picrites erupted at 76 Ma have 3He/4He (10–14 RA), which is at the lower end of the range for the Hawaiian Islands but still above the range of modern mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB; 6–10 RA). This was at a time when hot spot volcanism was occurring on thin lithosphere close to a spreading ridge and producing lava compositions otherwise nearly indistinguishable from MORB. After the hot spot and spreading center diverged during the Late Cretaceous, the hot spot produced lavas with significantly higher 3He/4He (up to 24 RA). Although 3He/4He ratios stabilized at relatively high values by 65 Ma, other chemical characteristics such as La/Yb and 87Sr/86Sr did not reach and stabilize at Hawaiian-Island-like values until ~45 Ma. Our limited 3He/4He record for the Hawaiian hot spot shows a poor correlation with plume flux estimates (calculated from bathymetry and residual gravity anomalies [Van Ark and Lin, 2004]). If 3He is a proxy for the quantity of primordial mantle material within the plume, then the lack of correlation between 3He/4He and calculated plume flux suggests that variation in primordial mantle flux is not the primary factor controlling total plume flux
Irrelevant Interactions without Composite Operators - A Remark on the Universality of Second Order Phase Transitions
We study the critical behaviour of symmetric theory including
irrelevant terms of the form in the bare action,
where is the UV cutoff (corresponding e.g. to the inverse lattice
spacing for a spin system). The main technical tool is renormalization theory
based on the flow equations of the renormalization group which permits to
establish the required convergence statements in generality and rigour. As a
consequence the effect of irrelevant terms on the critical behaviour may be
studied to any order without using renormalization theory for composite
operators. This is a technical simplification and seems preferable from the
physical point of view. In this short note we restrict for simplicity to the
symmetry class of the Ising model, i.e. one component theory. The
method is general, however.Comment: 13 page
