    Revealing the unseen: how to expose cloud usage while protecting user privacy

    Cloud users have little visibility into the performance characteristics and utilization of the physical machines underpinning the virtualized cloud resources they use. This uncertainty forces users and researchers to reverse engineer the inner workings of cloud systems in order to understand and optimize the conditions their applications operate. At Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC), as a public cloud operator, we'd like to expose the utilization of our physical infrastructure to stop this wasteful effort. Mindful that such exposure can be used maliciously for gaining insight into other user's workloads, in this position paper we argue for the need for an approach that balances openness of the cloud overall with privacy for each tenant inside of it. We believe that this approach can be instantiated via a novel combination of several security and privacy technologies.     The Effects of Background Music in Advertising: A Reassessment

    Gorn's (1982) pioneering article on the effects of background music in advertising has spurred a significant controversy and inspired vigorous interest in the topic. Following the recommendation of Allen and Madden (1985), we conducted three experiments that attempted to replicate Gorn's results. Contrary to Gorn's findings, there was no evidence that product preferences can be conditioned through a single exposure to appealing or unappealing music

    ER translocation intermediates are adjacent to a nonglycosylated 34-kD integral membrane protein

    We have used the homobifunctional cross-linking reagent disuccinimidyl suberate (DSS) to identify proteins that are adjacent to nascent polypeptides undergoing translocations across mammalian rough ER. Translocation intermediates were assembled by supplementing cell free translations of truncated mRNAs with the signal recognition particle (SRP) and microsomal membrane vesicles. Two prominent cross-linked products of 45 and 64 kD were detected. The 64-kD product was obtained when the cell free translation contained SRP, while formation of the 45-kD product required both SRP and translocation competent microsomal membrane vesicles. In agreement with previous investigators, we suggest that the 64-kD product arises by cross-linking of the nascent polypeptide to the 54-kD subunit of SRP. The 45-kD product resists alkaline extraction from the membrane, so we conclude that the 11-kD nascent polypeptide has been crosslinked to an integral membrane protein of approximately 34 kD (imp34). The cross-linked product does not bind to ConA Sepharose, nor is it sensitive to endoglycosidase H digestion; hence imp34 is not identical to the alpha or beta subunits of the signal sequence receptor (SSR). We propose that imp34 functions in concert with SSR to form a translocation site through which nascent polypeptides pass in traversing the membrane bilayer of the rough endoplasmic reticulum

    Unintentional moral relativism (UMR) is a judgmental phenomenon involving inadvertent misapplication of an ethical standard believed to be objective or absolute. It occurs when a decision maker intends to apply an ethical standard, but circumstances change the application of the standard without the decision-maker’s awareness, such that the standard is inadvertently misapplied. Research evidence and classroom experience show that even individuals who ascribe strongly to moral absolutes are prone to the pitfalls of UMR. This article offers three examples of experiments that can be done as classroom demonstrations to illustrate proneness to circumstantial biases that can influence students’ ethical judgment

    Music is an increasingly prominent and expensive feature of broadcast ads, yet its effects on message reception are controversial. The authors propose and test a contingency that may help resolve this controversy. Experimental results suggest that message reception is influenced by the interplay of two musical properties: attention-gaining value and music-message congruency. Increasing audience attention to music enhances message reception when the music evokes message-congruent (versus incongruent) thoughts

    Shortest Path Computation with No Information Leakage

    Shortest path computation is one of the most common queries in location-based services (LBSs). Although particularly useful, such queries raise serious privacy concerns. Exposing to a (potentially untrusted) LBS the client's position and her destination may reveal personal information, such as social habits, health condition, shopping preferences, lifestyle choices, etc. The only existing method for privacy-preserving shortest path computation follows the obfuscation paradigm; it prevents the LBS from inferring the source and destination of the query with a probability higher than a threshold. This implies, however, that the LBS still deduces some information (albeit not exact) about the client's location and her destination. In this paper we aim at strong privacy, where the adversary learns nothing about the shortest path query. We achieve this via established private information retrieval techniques, which we treat as black-box building blocks. Experiments on real, large-scale road networks assess the practicality of our schemes.Comment: VLDB201
