Biodegradable polyester-based shape memory polymers: Concepts of (supra)molecular architecturing

    Get PDF
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are capable of memorizing one or more temporary shapes and recovering to the permanent shape upon an external stimulus that is usually heat. Biodegradable polymers are an emerging family within the SMPs. This minireview delivers an overlook on actual concepts of molecular and supramolecular architectures which are followed to tailor the shape memory (SM) properties of biodegradable polyesters. Because the underlying switching mechanisms of SM actions is either related to the glass transition (Tg) or melting temperatures (Tm), the related SMPs are classified as Tg- or Tm-activated ones. For fixing of the permanent shape various physical and chemical networks serve, which were also introduced and discussed. Beside of the structure developments in one-way, also those in two-way SM polyesters were considered. Adjustment of the switching temperature to that of the human body, acceleration of the shape recovery, enhancement of the recovery stress, controlled degradation, and recycling aspects were concluded as main targets for the future development of SM systems with biodegradable polyesters

On the Handling of Continuous-Valued Attributes in Decision Tree Generation

We present a result applicable to classification learning algorithms that generate decision trees or rules using the information entropy minimization heuristic for discretizing continuous-valued attributes. The result serves to give a better understanding of the entropy measure, to point out that the behavior of the information entropy heuristic possesses desirable properties that justify its usage in a formal sense, and to improve the efficiency of evaluating continuous-valued attributes for cut value selection. Along with the formal proof, we present empirical results that demonstrate the theoretically expected reduction in evaluation effort for training data sets from real-world domains.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46964/1/10994_2004_Article_422458.pd

HUBUNGAN ANTARA KEPUASAN KERJA DAN KOMITMEN ORGANISASI PADA DOSEN DAN TENAGA KEPENDIDIKAN DI UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH GORONTALO

This research aims to determine the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment of lecturers and education staff at the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo. The research uses a correlational design using a quantitative approach. The sampling technique used a random sampling technique with a total sample of 70 respondents.  Hypothesis testing using Pearson product moment correlation analysis. The results indicated, there is a positive relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment at the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo with the result that p = 0.000 is smaller than α  = 0.05, which means that the higher the job satisfaction, the higher also the organizational commitment

Biocatalytic synthesis of delta-gluconolactone and epsilon-caprolactone copolymers

The biodegradability and biocompatibility properties of ε-caprolactone homopolymers place it as a valuable raw material, particularly for controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. However, the usefulness of such materials is limited by their low hydrophilicity and slow biodegradation rate. In order to improve polycaprolactone properties and functionalities, copolymerization of ε-caprolactone with δ-gluconolactone was investigated. Since enzymatic reactions involving sugars are usually hindered by the low solubility of these compounds in common organic solvents, finding the best reaction medium was a major objective of this research. The optimal copolymerization conditions were set up by using different organic media (solvent and solvents mixtures), as well as solvent free systems that are able to dissolve (completely or partially) sugars, and are nontoxic for enzymes. Native and immobilized lipases by different immobilization techniques from Candida antarctica B and Thermomyces lanuginosus have been used as biocatalyst at 80°C. Although the main copolymer amount was synthesized in DMSO:t-BuOH (20:80) medium, the highest polymerization degrees, up to 16 for the copolymer product, were achieved in solventless conditions. The products, cyclic and linear polyesters, have been characterized by FT-IR and MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The reaction product analysis revealed the formation of cyclic products that could be the major impediment of further increase of the chain length
