    Muon localization site in U(Pt,Pd)3

The angular and temperature (10-250 K) variation of the Knight shift of single-crystalline U(Pt0.95Pd0.05)3 has been measured in transverse field (B=0.6 T) mSR experiments. By analysing the temperature variation of the Knight shift with a modified Curie-Weiss expression the muon localization site in this hexagonal material is determined at (0,0,0).Comment: 12 pages (including 4 figures); postscript file; Proc. 8th Int. Child behavioral inhibition, parental overcontrol, and parental anxiety as predictors of adolescent anxiety.

This dissertation examined the prediction of anxiety symptoms over time during developmentally significant periods - the transition to middle school (12 years old) and the transition to high school (15 years old). Specifically, relationships between child behavioral inhibition, paternal anxiety, maternal anxiety, and parental control and concurrent levels of adolescent anxiety at each time point were analyzed. Despite a strong research base supporting individual connections between child behavioral inhibition, levels of parental control, parental anxiety symptoms and adolescent anxiety, the joint longitudinal associations have received scant attention in the literature. The current study also compared two different models of adolescent anxiety, a mediated model of adolescent anxiety and a moderated model of adolescent anxiety, to determine which better fit the data. Data for the study was part of the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD), a study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Participants initially enrolled in the study were 1,364 children (659 girls and 705 boys) and their caregivers and were recruited from 10 different geographic locations in the United States. The current study demonstrated associations between child behavioral inhibition, paternal anxiety, maternal anxiety, parental control and adolescent anxiety and suggests that they predict adolescent anxiety at 15 years. This study also indicated that earlier levels of adolescent and parental anxiety predict later levels of adolescent and parental anxiety and that parental anxiety symptoms have implications for concurrent and future levels of adolescent anxiety. Further research concerning the risk and protective factors as they relate to the etiology of adolescent anxiety should be explored to positively guide therapeutic interventions and shape appropriate parental behaviors

Correction of Errors in Texas Property Tax Rolls: The Battle for Fair Treatment

    Get PDF
This comment focuses on fair treatment of Texas taxpayers when a mistake is discovered in a county property tax roll. Specifically, it addresses the steps a taxpayer may take in seeking redress for such errors, focusing on two essential areas of the Texas Tax Code: section 25.25, subsection (c)(1), which pertains to clerical errors, and subsection (c)(3), which pertains to non-existent property, or property which takes a form different than that described in an appraisal roll

Highly Non-linear Excitonic Zeeman Spin-Splitting in Composition-Engineered Artificial Atoms

    Get PDF
Non-linear Zeeman splitting of neutral excitons is observed in composition engineered In(x)Ga(1-x)As self-assembled quantum dots and its microscopic origin is explained. Eight-band k.p simulations, performed using realistic dot parameters extracted from cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy, reveal that a quadratic contribution to the Zeeman energy originates from a spin dependent mixing of heavy and light hole orbital states in the dot. The dilute In-composition (x<0.35) and large lateral size (40-50 nm) of the quantum dots investigated is shown to strongly enhance the non-linear excitonic Zeeman gap, providing a blueprint to enhance such magnetic non-linearities via growth engineering

Tetragonal zirconia: Wet chemical preparation, mechanical and electrical properties

    Get PDF
Yttria-stabilized zirconia powders were prepared in the composition range of 3 to 13 at% yttria. The hydrolysis-gel precipitation technique was used, starting from metal alkoxides or chlorides. In the composition range between 5 and 10 at% yttria, the materials sintered at 1250°C have a fully tetragonal structure. The density was higher than 95% and the grain sizes can be varied between 0.1 and 0.5μm depending on the preparation conditions. The fracture toughness KIC amounts 6 to 11 MPam but is not dependent on the composition. The transformation toughening mechanism and the properties of the tetragonal phase itself play an important role in the increase of KIC compared with cubic materials. The magnitude of the oxygen-ion conductivity value is comparable with that for cubic materials

Critical voltage of a mesoscopic superconductor

We study the role of the quasiparticle distribution function f on the properties of a superconducting nanowire. We employ a numerical calculation based upon the Usadel equation. Going beyond linear response, we find a non-thermal distribution for f caused by an applied bias voltage. We demonstrate that the even part of f (the energy mode f_L) drives a first order transition from the superconducting state to the normal state irrespective of the current

Benchmarking high fidelity single-shot readout of semiconductor qubits

Determination of qubit initialisation and measurement fidelity is important for the overall performance of a quantum computer. However, the method by which it is calculated in semiconductor qubits varies between experiments. In this paper we present a full theoretical analysis of electronic single-shot readout and describe critical parameters to achieve high fidelity readout. In particular, we derive a model for energy selective state readout based on a charge detector response and examine how to optimise the fidelity by choosing correct experimental parameters. Although we focus on single electron spin readout, the theory presented can be applied to other electronic readout techniques in semiconductors that use a reservoir.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure

Over the years new and promising varieties are bred not only for resistance to diseases but also for direct yield by stress tolerance, architectural or other properties. Structural basis for tetrodotoxin-resistant sodium channel binding by μ-conotoxin SmIIIA

Journal ArticleSmIIIA is a new μ-conotoxin isolated recently from Conus stercusmuscarum. Although it shares several biochemical characteristics with other μ-conotoxins (the arrangement of cysteine residues and a conserved arginine believed to interact with residues near the channel pore), it has several distinctive features, including the absence of hydroxyproline, and is the first specific antagonist of tetrodotoxin-resistant voltage-gated sodium channels to be characterized
