A Novel Approach to Analyze Fashion Digital Archive from Humanities
Fashion styles adopted every day are an important aspect of culture, and
style trend analysis helps provide a deeper understanding of our societies and
cultures. To analyze everyday fashion trends from the humanities perspective,
we need a digital archive that includes images of what people wore in their
daily lives over an extended period. In fashion research, building digital
fashion image archives has attracted significant attention. However, the
existing archives are not suitable for retrieving everyday fashion trends. In
addition, to interpret how the trends emerge, we need non-fashion data sources
relevant to why and how people choose fashion. In this study, we created a new
fashion image archive called Chronicle Archive of Tokyo Street Fashion (CAT
STREET) based on a review of the limitations in the existing digital fashion
archives. CAT STREET includes images showing the clothing people wore in their
daily lives during the period 1970--2017, which contain timestamps and street
location annotations. We applied machine learning to CAT STREET and found two
types of fashion trend patterns. Then, we demonstrated how magazine archives
help us interpret how trend patterns emerge. These empirical analyses show our
approach's potential to discover new perspectives to promote an understanding
of our societies and cultures through fashion embedded in consumers' daily
lives.Comment: In Proceedings of 'The 23rd International Conference on Asia-Pacific

Novel Methods to Study Angiogenesis Using Tissue Explants
Tissue explants of skeletal muscles, brain, kidney, liver and spleen from mice were cultured using collagen gel. Electron microscopic observation revealed that formation of capillary tubes with pericyte-like cells occurred only from the tissue explant of skeletal muscles. The capillary tubes formed in the collagen gel were positive for tomato lectin and platelet/endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PCAM)-1 antibody. Formation of capillary tubes in the rat was more predominant than in the mouse. Plasmalemmal vesicles were clearly observed in the capillary tubes from rat tissue explant. Muscle fiber-type differences were also observed. In the soleus muscle, the formation of capillary tubes was predominant than the tibialis anterior muscle. Using this culture model from the rat soleus muscle, effects of α-isoproterenol (β-adrenergic receptor agonist) and low-frequency electrical stimulation were examined on the formation of capillary tubes and fine structures of skeletal muscle explant. The formation of capillary tubes was promoted by α-isoproterenol administration. At low-frequency electrical stimulation, the formation of capillary tubes was inhibited. Both α-isoproterenol and electrical stimulation reduced the degeneration of skeletal muscles. This culture method of skeletal muscles may provide a useful model that can examine the effects of various drugs and physical stimulations
Characteristics of Highly Polymorphic Segmental Copy-Number Variations Observed in Japanese by BAC-Array-CGH
Segmental copy-number variations (CNVs) may contribute to genetic variation in humans. Reports
of the existence and characteristics of CNVs in a large Japanese cohort are quite limited. We report the data from a large Japanese population.
We conducted population screening for 213 unrelated Japanese individuals using comparative genomic hybridization based on a bacterial artificial
chromosome microarray (BAC-aCGH). We summarize the data by focusing on highly polymorphic CNVs in ≥5.0% of the individual,
since they may be informative for demonstrating the relationships between genotypes and their phenotypes. We found a total of 680 CNVs at 16
different BAC-regions in the genome. The majority of the polymorphic CNVs presented on BAC-clones that overlapped with regions of segmental
duplication, and the majority of the polymorphic CNVs observed in this population had been previously reported in other publications.
Some of the CNVs contained genes which might be related to phenotypic heterogeneity among individuals
CIP-CSLR Scheme for Condensation and Evaporation Calculations of Water Droplets
We present a number-density advection based method designed to calculate the condensation and evaporation of water droplets. An Eulerian-in-radius discretization scheme is adopted, making the present model suitable for use in the spectral bin model for cloud microphysics. The advection equation is solved using the constrained interpolated profile-conservative Semi-Lagrangian with rational function (CIP-CLSR) scheme. In order to evaluate the present method based on the CIP-CSLR scheme, we have performed test calculations for a sequence of condensation and evaporation using the present method and conventional methods, and then compared the results. The comparisons have revealed the advantages of the present method in terms of numerical accuracy, numerical stability, conservation and computational cost
