L1551NE - Discovery of a Binary Companion
L1551NE is a very young (class 0 or I) low-mass protostar located close to
the well-studied L1551 IRS5. We present here evidence, from 1.3mm continuum
interferometric observations at ~1'' resolution, for a binary companion to
L1551NE. The companion, whose 1.3mm flux density is ~1/3 that of the primary
component, is located 1.43'' (~230 A.U. at 160pc) to the southeast. The
millimeterwave emission from the primary component may have been just barely
resolved, with deconvolved size ~0.82"x0.70" (~131x112 A.U.). The companion
emission was unresolved (<100 A.U.). The pair is embedded within a flattened
circum-binary envelope of size ~5.4'' x 2.3'' (~860 x 370 A.U.). The masses of
the three components (i.e. from the cicumstellar material of the primary star
and its companion, and the envelope) are approximately 0.044, 0.014 and 0.023

Focused laser Doppler velocimeter
A system for remotely measuring velocities present in discrete volumes of air is described. A CO2 laser beam is focused by a telescope at such a volume, a focal volume, and within the focusable range, near field, of the telescope. The back scatter, or reflected light, principally from the focal volume, passes back through the telescope and is frequency compared with the original frequency of the laser, and the difference frequency or frequencies represent particle velocities in that focal volume
Discovery of a 500 pc shell in the nucleus of Centaurus A
Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared images of the radio galaxy Centaurus A
reveal a shell-like, bipolar, structure 500 pc to the north and south of the
nucleus. This shell is seen in 5.8, 8.0 and 24 micron broad-band images. Such a
remarkable shell has not been previously detected in a radio galaxy and is the
first extragalactic nuclear shell detected at mid-infrared wavelengths. We
estimate that the shell is a few million years old and has a mass of order
million solar masses. A conservative estimate for the mechanical energy in the
wind driven bubble is 10^53 erg. The shell could have created by a small few
thousand solar mass nuclear burst of star formation. Alternatively, the
bolometric luminosity of the active nucleus is sufficiently large that it could
power the shell. Constraints on the shell's velocity are lacking. However, if
the shell is moving at 1000 km/s then the required mechanical energy would be

Immunohistochemical localization of collagen types I and VI in human skin wounds
A total of 74 human skin wounds were investigated and collagen types I and VI were localized in the wound area by immunohistochemistry. Collagen type I appeared in the form of ramifying string-like structures after approximately 5–6 days, but positive reactions in the form of a spot-like staining around isolated fibroblasts also occurred in a skin wound aged 4 days. Collagen VI was detectable after a post-infliction interval of at least 3 days showing a strongly positive reacting network associated with fibroblasts in the wound area. Both collagens appeared almost constantly after a wound age of 6–7 clays and could also be found in wounds aged a few months. Therefore, although a positive reaction for collagen type I in the form of string-like and ramifying structures around wound fibroblasts indicates a wound age of at least 5–6 days, a spot-like positive staining for collagen type I cannot exclude a wound age of at least 4 days. A positive staining for collagen type VI represents a post-infliction time of 3 days or more. The almost constant appearance of these collagen types suggests that negative results in a sufficient number of specimens indicate a wound age of less than 6–7 days, but cannot completely exclude longer post-infliction intervals. Since collagen type I and VI are also found in the granulation/scar tissue of lesions with advanced wound age, the immunohistochemical analysis of these proteins provides no further information for an age determination of older skin wounds
The Spitzer Space Telescope Mission
The Spitzer Space Telescope, NASA's Great Observatory for infrared astronomy,
was launched 2003 August 25 and is returning excellent scientific data from its
Earth-trailing solar orbit. Spitzer combines the intrinsic sensitivity
achievable with a cryogenic telescope in space with the great imaging and
spectroscopic power of modern detector arrays to provide the user community
with huge gains in capability for exploration of the cosmos in the infrared.
The observatory systems are largely performing as expected and the projected
cryogenic lifetime is in excess of 5 years. This paper summarizes the on-orbit
scientific, technical and operational performance of Spitzer. Subsequent papers
in this special issue describe the Spitzer instruments in detail and highlight
many of the exciting scientific results obtained during the first six months of

Chlorine inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7.
We analyzed isolates of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (which has recently caused waterborne outbreaks) and wild-type E. coli to determine their sensitivity to chlorination. Both pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains were significantly reduced within 1 minute of exposure to free chlorine. Results indicate that chlorine levels typically maintained in water systems are sufficient to inactivate these organisms
Longitudinal Cognitive Performance of Alzheimer\u27s Disease Neuropathological Subtypes
Introduction: Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) neuropathological subtypes (limbic predominant [lpAD], hippocampal sparing [HpSpAD], and typical [tAD]), defined by relative neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) burden in limbic and cortical regions, have not been studied in prospectively characterized epidemiological cohorts with robust cognitive assessments.
Methods: Two hundred ninety-two participants with neuropathologically confirmed AD from the Religious Orders Study and Memory and Aging Project were categorized by neuropathological subtype based on previously specified diagnostic criteria using quantitative regional NFT counts. Rates of cognitive decline were compared across subtypes using linear mixed-effects models that included subtype, time, and a subtype-time interaction as predictors and four cognitive domain factor scores (memory, executive function, language, visuospatial) and a global score as outcomes. To assess if memory was relatively preserved in HpSpAD, non-memory factor scores were included as covariates in the mixed-effects model with memory as the outcome.
Results: There were 57 (20%) with lpAD, 22 (8%) with HpSpAD and 213 (73%) with tAD. LpAD died significantly later than the participants with tAD (2.4 years, P = .01) and with HpSpAD (3.8 years, P = .03). Compared to tAD, HpSpAD, but not lpAD, performed significantly worse in all cognitive domains at the time of initial impairment and declined significantly faster in memory, language, and globally. HpSpAD did not have relatively preserved memory performance at any time point.
Conclusion: The relative frequencies of AD neuropathological subtypes in an epidemiological sample were consistent with a previous report in a convenience sample. People with HpSpAD decline rapidly, but may not have a memory-sparing clinical syndrome. Cohort-specific differences in regional tau burden and comorbid neuropathology may explain the lack of clinicopathological correlation
Spitzer observations of a 24 micron shadow: Bok Globule CB190
We present Spitzer observations of the dark globule CB190 (L771). We observe
a roughly circular 24 micron shadow with a 70 arcsec radius. The extinction
profile of this shadow matches the profile derived from 2MASS photometry at the
outer edges of the globule and reaches a maximum of ~32 visual magnitudes at
the center. The corresponding mass of CB190 is ~10 Msun. Our 12CO and 13CO J =
2-1 data over a 10 arcmin X 10 arcmin region centered on the shadow show a
temperature ~10 K. The thermal continuum indicates a similar temperature for
the dust. The molecular data also show evidence of freezeout onto dust grains.
We estimate a distance to CB190 of 400 pc using the spectroscopic parallax of a
star associated with the globule. Bonnor-Ebert fits to the density profile, in
conjunction with this distance, yield xi_max = 7.2, indicating that CB190 may
be unstable. The high temperature (56 K) of the best fit Bonnor-Ebert model is
in contradiction with the CO and thermal continuum data, leading to the
conclusion that the thermal pressure is not enough to prevent free-fall
collapse. We also find that the turbulence in the cloud is inadequate to
support it. However, the cloud may be supported by the magnetic field, if this
field is at the average level for dark globules. Since the magnetic field will
eventually leak out through ambipolar diffusion, it is likely that CB190 is

On Orbit Performance of the MIPS Instrument
The Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) provides long wavelength capability for the mission, in imaging bands at 24, 70, and 160 microns and measurements of spectral energy distributions between 52 and 100 microns at a spectral resolution of about 7%. By using true detector arrays in each band, it provides both critical sampling of the Spitzer point spread function and relatively large imaging fields of view, allowing for substantial advances in sensitivity, angular resolution, and efficiency of areal coverage compared with previous space far-infrared capabilities. The Si:As BIB 24 micron array has excellent photometric properties, and measurements with rms relative errors of 1% or better can be obtained. The two longer wavelength arrays use Ge:Ga detectors with poor photometric stability. However, the use of 1.) a scan mirror to modulate the signals rapidly on these arrays, 2.) a system of on-board stimulators used for a relative calibration approximately every two minutes, and 3.) specialized reduction software result in good photometry with these arrays also, with rms relative errors of less than 10%
Longitudinal Analysis of Quality of Life, Clinical, Radiographic, Echocardiographic, and Laboratory Variables in Dogs with Preclinical Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease Receiving Pimobendan or Placebo: The EPIC Study
Background: Changes in clinical variables associated with the administration of pimobendan to dogs with preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and cardiomegaly have not been described.
Objectives: To investigate the effect of pimobendan on clinical variables and the relationship between a change in heart size and the time to congestive heart failure (CHF) or cardiac-related death (CRD) in dogs with MMVD and cardiomegaly. To determine whether pimobendan-treated dogs differ from dogs receiving placebo at onset of CHF.
Animals: Three hundred and fifty-four dogs with MMVD and cardiomegaly.
Materials and Methods: Prospective, blinded study with dogs randomized (ratio 1:1) to pimobendan (0.4-0.6 mg/kg/d) or placebo. Clinical, laboratory, and heart-size variables in both groups were measured and compared at different time points (day 35 and onset of CHF) and over the study duration. Relationships between short-term changes in echocardiographic variables and time to CHF or CRD were explored.
Results: At day 35, heart size had reduced in the pimobendan group:median change in (Delta) LVIDDN -0.06 (IQR:-0.15 to + 0.02), P < 0.0001, and LA:Ao -0.08 (IQR:-0.23 to + 0.03), P < 0.0001. Reduction in heart size was associated with increased time to CHF or CRD. Hazard ratio for a 0.1 increase in Delta LVIDDN was 1.26, P = 0.0003. Hazard ratio for a 0.1 increase in Delta LA:Ao was 1.14, P = 0.0002. At onset of CHF, groups were similar.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Pimobendan treatment reduces heart size. Reduced heart size is associated with improved outcome. At the onset of CHF, dogs treated with pimobendan were indistinguishable from those receiving placebo
