Study of yttrium iron garnet rods reveals new magnetostatic echo mode

Beam tests of the 12 MHz RFQ RIB injector for ATLAS
Beam tests of the ANL 12 MHz Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), designed for use as the initial element of an injector system for radioactive beams into the existing ATLAS accelerators, are in progress. Recent high-voltage tests of the RFQ without beam achieved the design intervane voltage of 100 kV cw, enabling beam tests with A /q as large as 132 using beams from the ANL Physics Division 4 MV Dynamitron accelerator facility. Although the RFQ was designed for bunched beams, initial tests have been performed with unbunched beams. Experiments with stable, unbunched beams of singly-charged /sup 132/Xe and /sup 84/Kr measured the output beam energy distribution as a function of the RFQ operating voltage. The observed energies are in excellent agreement with numerical beam simulations. (5 refs)

Multimodal Social Media Analysis for Gang Violence Prevention
Gang violence is a severe issue in major cities across the U.S. and recent
studies [Patton et al. 2017] have found evidence of social media communications
that can be linked to such violence in communities with high rates of exposure
to gang activity. In this paper we partnered computer scientists with social
work researchers, who have domain expertise in gang violence, to analyze how
public tweets with images posted by youth who mention gang associations on
Twitter can be leveraged to automatically detect psychosocial factors and
conditions that could potentially assist social workers and violence outreach
workers in prevention and early intervention programs. To this end, we
developed a rigorous methodology for collecting and annotating tweets. We
gathered 1,851 tweets and accompanying annotations related to visual concepts
and the psychosocial codes: aggression, loss, and substance use. These codes
are relevant to social work interventions, as they represent possible pathways
to violence on social media. We compare various methods for classifying tweets
into these three classes, using only the text of the tweet, only the image of
the tweet, or both modalities as input to the classifier. In particular, we
analyze the usefulness of mid-level visual concepts and the role of different
modalities for this tweet classification task. Our experiments show that
individually, text information dominates classification performance of the loss
class, while image information dominates the aggression and substance use
classes. Our multimodal approach provides a very promising improvement (18%
relative in mean average precision) over the best single modality approach.
Finally, we also illustrate the complexity of understanding social media data
and elaborate on open challenges

Unraveling the Shift to the Entrepreneurial Economy
A recent literature has emerged providing compelling evidence that a major shift in the organization of the developed economies has been taking place: away from what has been characterized as the managed economy towards the entrepreneurial economy. In particular, the empirical evidence provides consistent support that (1) the role of entrepreneurship has significantly increased, and (2) a positive relationship exists between entrepreneurial activity and economic performance. However, the factors underlying this observed shift have not been identified in a systematic manner. The purpose of this paper is to suggest some of the factors leading to this shift and implications for public policy. In particular, we find that a fundamental catalyst underlying the shift from the managed to the entrepreneurial economy involved the role of technological change. However, we also find that it was not just technological change but rather involved a number of supporting factors, ranging from the demise of the communist system, increased globalization, new competition for multinational firms and higher levels of prosperity. Recognition of the causes of the shift from the managed to the entrepreneurial economy suggests a rethinking of the public policy approach. Rather than the focus of directly and exclusively on promoting startups and SMEs, it may be that the current approach to entrepreneurship policy is misguided. The priority should not be on entrepreneurship policy but rather a more pervasive and encompassing approach, policy consistent with an entrepreneurial economy
