    Designing an educator toolkit for the mobile learning age

Mobile technologies have been described as ‘boundary’ objects which enable teachers and learners to transcend many of the barriers such as rigid schedules and spaces which have hitherto characterised traditional forms of education. However, educators need to better understand how to design learning scenarios which genuinely exploit the unique pedagogical affordances of mobile technologies rather than replicating existing patterns and modes of behaviour. This article describes the design and development of a mobile learning toolkit for educators to realise this vision. It presents the theoretical underpinnings for the toolkit and describes the development of different tools, instruments and resources. The main aim of the toolkit is to help teacher educators and teachers build knowledge and understanding of more diverse mobile pedagogical approaches

    One-Dimensional Directed Sandpile Models and the Area under a Brownian Curve

    We derive the steady state properties of a general directed ``sandpile'' model in one dimension. Using a central limit theorem for dependent random variables we find the precise conditions for the model to belong to the universality class of the Totally Asymmetric Oslo model, thereby identifying a large universality class of directed sandpiles. We map the avalanche size to the area under a Brownian curve with an absorbing boundary at the origin, motivating us to solve this Brownian curve problem. Thus, we are able to determine the moment generating function for the avalanche-size probability in this universality class, explicitly calculating amplitudes of the leading order terms.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

    This article offers teachers a digital pedagogical framework, research-inspired and underpinned by socio-cultural theory, to guide the design of personalised, authentic and collaborative learning scenarios for students using mobile devices in remote learning settings during this pandemic. It provides a series of freely available online resources underpinned by our framework, including a mobile learning toolkit, a professional learning app, and robust, validated surveys for evaluating tasks. Finally, it presents a set of evidence-based principles for effective innovative teaching with mobile devices

    Innovative mobile learning: A scan of the literature

This paper summarises findings from an initial study completed as the first phase of the Erasmus+ KA2 research project: Designing and Evaluating Innovative Mobile Pedagogies (DEIMP). The purpose of the scoping study was to inform the design and development of a multi-purpose mobile app that will support educators and pre-service teachers in designing and evaluating creative and innovative mobile learning episodes for their students. This first component of the DEIMP study involved the conduct of a Systematic Literature Review to identify innovative and effective practices in m-Learning. A set of 57 articles were identified as reporting on innovative mobile practices and these were further assessed for their level of innovation. The study showed that innovation lies on a continuum from sustaining innovation to disruptive innovation and that disruptive innovation is infrequent

    The use of eculizumab as a bridge to retransplantation for chronic antibody-mediated rejection in a heart transplant recipient: a case report.

    BackgroundAntibody-mediated rejection (AMR) remains a major management challenge in heart transplantation given the complexity of pathological diagnosis and dearth of evidence for effective management. Eculizumab, an anti-C5 monoclonal antibody which inhibits terminal complement activation, has been reported to decrease early AMR in sensitized renal transplant recipients.Case summaryWe report a case of a 29-year-old gentleman with chronic AMR 8 years after heart transplantation, manifesting as significant graft dysfunction. Donor-specific antibodies to DQ7 were found to be causative. Antibody-mediated rejection was managed with quadruple oral immunosuppressive therapy (mycophenolate, prednisolone, everolimus, and tacrolimus) as well as a sequence of broad-spectrum immunological therapies; intravenous (IV) methylprednisolone, plasmapheresis, IV immunoglobulin, rituximab, bortezomib, tocilizumab, and splenic irradiation. No treatment had a sustained impact on donor-specific anti-HLA antibodies (DSAs) or graft function. After testing showed the DQ7 antibodies were complement-binding, a trial of eculizumab was started. This improved DSAs somewhat, and improved graft function and New York Heart Association functional class substantially. The patient was relisted for heart transplantation and successfully retransplanted in March 2018. Specifically, the new organ and recipient were matched at DQ7. After discontinuation of eculizumab, the patient has remained healthy and well, with normal graft function 28 months after retransplantation.DiscussionTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of chronic AMR in a heart transplant patient, successfully stabilized with eculizumab and bridged to retransplantation
