Decoherence suppression by uncollapsing
We show that the qubit decoherence due to zero-temperature energy relaxation
can be almost completely suppressed by using the quantum uncollapsing
procedure. To protect a qubit state, a partial quantum measurement moves it
towards the ground state, where it is kept during the storage period, while the
second partial measurement restores the initial state. This procedure
preferentially selects the cases without energy decay events. Stronger
decoherence suppression requires smaller selection probability; a desired point
in this trade-off can be chosen by varying the measurement strength. The
experiment can be realized in a straightforward way using the superconducting
phase qubit.Comment: 4 page
Weld sequence optimization: the use of surrogate models for solving sequential combinatorial problems
The solution of combinatorial optimization problems usually involves the consideration of many possible design configurations. This often makes such approaches computationally expensive, especially when dealing with complex finite element models. Here a surrogate model is proposed that can be used to reduce substantially the computational expense of sequential combinatorial finite element problems. The model is illustrated by application to a weld path planning problem
ResilienceâRecovery Factors in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Among Female and Male Vietnam Veterans: Hardiness, Postwar Social Support, and Additional Stressful Life Events
Structural equation modeling procedures were used to examine relationships among several war zone stressor dimensions, resilience-recovery factors, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in a national sample of 1,632 Vietnam veterans (26% women and 74% men). A 9-factor measurement model was specified on a mixed-gender subsample of the data and then replicated on separate subsamples of female and male veterans. For both genders, the structural models supported strong mediation effects for the intrapersonal resource characteristic of hardiness, postwar structural and functional social support, and additional negative life events in the postwar period. Support for moderator effects or buffering in terms of interactions between war zone stressor level and resiliencerecovery factors was minimal
Beef Cattle Instance Segmentation Using Fully Convolutional Neural Network
In this paper we present a novel instance segmentation algorithm that extends a fully convolutional network to learn to label objects separately without prediction of regions of interest. We trained the new algorithm on a challenging CCTV recording of beef cattle, as well as benchmark MS COCO and Pascal VOC datasets. Extensive experimentation showed that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions by up to 8% on our data

Stochastic parameterization: uncertainties from convection
In 2005, the ECMWF held a workshop on stochastic parameterisation, at which the convection was seen as being
a key issue. That much is clear from the working group reports and particularly the statement from working group
1 that âit is clear that a stochastic convection scheme is desirableâ. The present note aims to consider our current
status in comparison with some of the issues raised and hopes expressed in that working group report
Radio-frequency reflectometry on an undoped AlGaAs/GaAs single electron transistor
Radio frequency reflectometry is demonstrated in a sub-micron undoped
AlGaAs/GaAs device. Undoped single electron transistors (SETs) are attractive
candidates to study single electron phenomena due to their charge stability and
robust electronic properties after thermal cycling. However these devices
require a large top-gate which is unsuitable for the fast and sensitive radio
frequency reflectometry technique. Here we demonstrate rf reflectometry is
possible in an undoped SET.Comment: Four pages, three figures, one supplementary fil
Where Are We Going? Parent-child television reality programmes in China
This article looks at the role of format television in the Peopleâs Republic of China. It juxtaposes two key ideas: the âone format policyâ and the One Child Policy. Both are government restrictions intended to kerb reproduction. Formats provide a means for the reproduction of programming ideas, that is, they are generative. When formats âfitâ cultural understandings they can be remarkably successful, as with family oriented formats. Yet there is something unusual about China: in comparison to many international markets, China offers a unique demographic â those people born after 1978. The article examines a formatted programme called Where Are We Going, Dad? introduced into China from South Korea, which illustrates a subgenre known as the âparent-child caringâ (qinzi) format. The article shows how this genre has capitalised on the interest in the health and future well-being of the One Child in China, as well as spinning off its own formatted offspring
Data science in translational vision science and technology
What is Data Science?
Data science involves the use of a variety of quantitative
methods (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computer
science) to extract useful information from structured
and unstructured data.1 Typically, data scientists
undertake exploratory data analysis by deploying
machine learning principles and algorithms to
identify patterns in rawdata with the purpose of understanding
processes and predicting outcomes. These
analytic approaches include predictive causal analytics,
prescriptive analytics, and machine learning for pattern
discovery and outcome prediction, and they require a
large volume and variety of data (i.e. structured as well
as unstructured data)
