    Objective functions for comparing simulations with insect trap catch data

    Targeted surveillance of high risk invasion sites using insect traps is becoming an important tool in border biosecurity, aiding in early detection and subsequent monitoring of eradication attempts. The mark-release-recapture technique is widely used to study the dispersal of insects, and to generate unbiased estimates of population density. It may also be used in the biosecurity context to quantify the efficacy of surveillance and eradication monitoring systems. Marked painted apple moths were released at three different locations in Auckland, New Zealand over six weeks during a recent eradication campaign. The results of the mark-release-recapture experiment were used to parameterise a process-based mechanistic dispersal model in order to understand the moth dispersal pattern in relation to wind patterns, and to provide biosecurity agencies with an ability to predict moth dispersal patterns. A genetic algorithm was used to fit some model parameters. Different objective functions were tested: 1) Cohen’s Kappa test, 2) the sum of squared difference on trap catches, 3) the sum of squared difference weighted by distance from the release site, 4) the sum of squared difference weighted on distance between best-fit paired data. The genetic algorithm proved to be a powerful fitting method, but the model results were highly dependant on the objective function used. Objective functions for fitting spatial data need to characterise spatial patterns as well as density (ie. recapture rate). For fitting stochastic models to datasets derived from stochastic spatial processes, objective functions need to accommodate the fact that a perfect fit is practically impossible, even if the models are the same. Applied on mark-release-recapture data, the Cohen’s Kappa test and the sum of squared difference on trap catches captured respectively the distance component of the spatial pattern and the density component adequately but failed to capture both requirements whereas the sum of squared difference weighted by distance from the release site did. However, in order to integrate the stochastic error generated by the model underlying stochastic process, only the sum of squared difference weighted on distance between best-fit paired data was adequate. The relevance of each of the fitting methods is detailed, and their respective strengths and weaknesses are discussed in relation to their ability to capture the spatial patterns of insect recaptures

    Glucose-6-phosphate reduces calcium accumulation in rat brain endoplasmic reticulum

    Brain cells expend large amounts of energy sequestering calcium (Ca2+), while loss of Ca2+ compartmentalization leads to cell damage or death. Upon cell entry, glucose is converted to glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), a parent substrate to several metabolic major pathways, including glycolysis. In several tissues, G6P alters the ability of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to sequester Ca2+. This led to the hypothesis that G6P regulates Ca2+ accumulation by acting as an endogenous ligand for sarco-endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA). Whole brain ER microsomes were pooled from adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Using radio-isotopic assays, 45Ca2+ accumulation was quantified following incubation with increasing amounts of G6P, in the presence or absence of thapsigargin, a potent SERCA inhibitor. To qualitatively assess SERCA activity, the simultaneous release of inorganic phosphate (Pi) coupled with Ca2+ accumulation was quantified. Addition of G6P significantly and decreased Ca2+ accumulation in a dose-dependent fashion (1–10 mM). The reduction in Ca2+ accumulation was not significantly different that seen with addition of thapsigargin. Addition of glucose-1-phosphate or fructose-6-phosphate, or other glucose metabolic pathway intermediates, had no effect on Ca2+ accumulation. Further, the release of Pi was markedly decreased, indicating G6P-mediated SERCA inhibition as the responsible mechanism for reduced Ca2+ uptake. Simultaneous addition of thapsigargin and G6P did decrease inorganic phosphate in comparison to either treatment alone, which suggests that the two treatments have different mechanisms of action. Therefore, G6P may be a novel, endogenous regulator of SERCA activity. Additionally, pathological conditions observed during disease states that disrupt glucose homeostasis, may be attributable to Ca2+ dystasis caused by altered G6P regulation of SERCA activity

    We report a case of a neonate born with a giant fibroma occupying the entirety of her left ventricle. Due to the extensive resection, her postoperative course was complicated by severely diminished left ventricular function and complete heart block necessitating extracorporeal support. Ultimately, cardiac resynchronization therapy was employed, after which the infant’s ventricular function gradually improved and she was successfully discharged to home

    This Dissertation evaluates the potential opportunities, challenges and outcomes attendant on Vietnam’s modernisation effort through the incorporation of International Labour Organisation (ILO) Core International Labour Standards (CILS) on freedom of association and collective bargaining into Vietnam law. The Dissertation shows that although Vietnam is likely to benefit from incorporating the CILS on freedom of association and collective bargaining into its legal system, its constitutional value system is not currently consistent with those of particular ILO CILS.     General duality for abelian-group-valued statistical-mechanics models

    We introduce a general class of statistical-mechanics models, taking values in an abelian group, which includes examples of both spin and gauge models, both ordered and disordered. The model is described by a set of ``variables'' and a set of ``interactions''. A Gibbs factor is associated to each variable and to each interaction. We introduce a duality transformation for systems in this class. The duality exchanges the abelian group with its dual, the Gibbs factors with their Fourier transforms, and the interactions with the variables. High (low) couplings in the interaction terms are mapped into low (high) couplings in the one-body terms. The idea is that our class of systems extends the one for which the classical procedure 'a la Kramers and Wannier holds, up to include randomness into the pattern of interaction. We introduce and study some physical examples: a random Gaussian Model, a random Potts-like model, and a random variant of discrete scalar QED. The study of naturally occurring language in any social context is discourse analysis, and it makes use of various qualitative methods to increase our understanding of human experience. The researchers build upon Herring’s (2004) work, which used discourse analysis approach to explore communication taking place in mediated environment using Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) toolkit. In this article the researchers will discuss how to conduct a study using the discourse analysis approach in computer-mediated environment specially in discussion board forums by analyzing the naturally occurring asynchronous communication using Herring’s CMDA toolkit to reveal how language is used to perform the many actions needed to share and exchange information online

    Measuring Basal Force Fluctuations of Debris Flows Using Seismic Recordings and Empirical Green's Functions

    We present a novel method for measuring the fluctuating basal normal and shear stresses of debris flows by using along‐channel seismic recordings. Our method couples a simple parameterization of a debris flow as a seismic source with direct measurements of seismic path effects using empirical Green's functions generated with a force hammer. We test this method using two large‐scale (8 and 10 m³) experimental flows at the U.S. Geological Survey debris‐flow flume that were recorded by dozens of three‐component seismic sensors. The seismically derived basal stress fluctuations compare well in amplitude and timing to independent force plate measurements within the valid frequency range (15–50 Hz). We show that although the high‐frequency seismic signals provide band‐limited forcing information, there are systematic relations between the fluctuating stresses and independently measured flow properties, especially mean basal shear stress and flow thickness. However, none of the relationships are simple, and since the flow properties also correlate with one another, we cannot isolate a single factor that relates in a simple way to the fluctuating forces. Nevertheless, our observations, most notably the gradually declining ratio of fluctuating to mean basal stresses during flow passage and the distinctive behavior of the coarse, unsaturated flow front, imply that flow style may be a primary control on the conversion of translational to vibrational kinetic energy. This conversion ultimately controls the radiation of high‐frequency seismic waves. Thus, flow style may provide the key to revealing the nature of the relationship between fluctuating forces and other flow properties
