    Binary Formation with Different Metallicities: Dependence on Initial Conditions

    The fragmentation process in collapsing clouds with various metallicities is studied using three-dimensional nested-grid hydrodynamics. Initial clouds are specified by three parameters: cloud metallicity, initial rotation energy and initial cloud shape. For different combinations of these parameters, we calculate 480 models in total and study cloud evolution, fragmentation conditions, orbital separation and binary frequency. For the cloud to fragment during collapse, the initial angular momentum must be higher than a threshold value, which decreases with decreasing metallicity. Although the exact fragmentation conditions depend also on the initial cloud shape, this dependence is only modest. Our results indicate a higher binary frequency in lower-metallicity gas. In particular, with the same median rotation parameter as in the solar neighbourhood, a majority of stars are born as members of binary/multiple systems for < 10^-4 Z_sun. With initial mass < 0.1 M_sun, if fragments are ejected in embryo from the host clouds by multi-body interaction, they evolve to substellar-mass objects. This provides a formation channel for low-mass stars in zero- or low-metallicity environments.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS.     Isolated congenital megacystis without intestinal obstruction: A mild variant of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome?

    Megacystis is frequently involved with chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome; however, isolated megacystis without intestinal obstruction is extremely rare. We present the case of a female patient with isolated congenital megacystis without severe intestinal obstruction. In this case, barium enema did not reveal any significant findings; however, histologic evaluation of her rectum showed hypoganglionosis of the submucous and myenteric plexuses. These findings indicate that this case may be a mild variant of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome. The presence of megacystis should alert the physician to the possibility of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Molecular Identification of t(w5): Vps52 Promotes Pluripotential Cell Differentiation Through Cell-Cell Interactions

    After implantation, pluripotent epiblasts are converted to embryonic ectoderm through cell-cell interactions that significantly change the transcriptional and epigenetic networks. An entree to understanding this vital developmental transition is the t(w5) mutation of the mouse t complex. This mutation produces highly specific defects in the embryonic ectoderm before gastrulation, leading to death of the embryonic ectoderm. Using a positional cloning approach, we have now identified the mutated gene, completing a decades-long search. The gene, vacuolar protein sorting 52 (Vps52), is a mouse homolog of yeast VPS52 that is involved in the retrograde trafficking of endosomes. Our data suggest that Vps52 acts in extraembryonic tissues to support the growth and differentiation of embryonic ectoderm via cell-cell interactions. It is also required in the formation of embryonic structures at a later stage of development, revealing hitherto unknown functions of Vps52 in the development of a multicellular organism.NSFCellular and Molecular Biolog
