    THE STANDARD MOTION MODEL OF A BASKETBALL SET SHOT FOR TEACHING

    The purpose of this study was to create a standard motion model of a basketball set shot. Twenty-one male collegiate basketball players participated in three-dimensional data collection session (Vicon MX+, 250Hz), and the method proposed by Ae, et al. (2007) was used to create a standard motion model. The set shot motion in the standard motion model started with the shoulder flexion and hip extension in the downward phase, followed by the sequential motions of the knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and wrist joints in the upward phase. Immediately before the ball release, the elbow and wrist joints were abruptly extended. The motion variation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints just before the ball release were small, implying there must be some commonality in these joint motions

    A rare case of xanthogranuloma of the stomach masquerading as an advanced stage tumor

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Xanthogranuloma of the stomach is an extremely rare disease, and this lesion has only been found to coexist with early gastric cancer in 2 cases in the literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of xanthogranuloma of the stomach combined with early gastric cancer that mimicked an advanced stage tumor. A 65-year-old female was referred to our hospital because of epigastralgia. During a physical examination, a defined abdominal mass was palpable in the region of the left hypochondrium. Imaging studies revealed an advanced gastric cancer, which was suspected of having infiltrated the abdominal wall. Total gastrectomy and resection of the regional lymph node and abdominal wall were performed. Histopathologic examination of the resected specimen demonstrated xanthogranuloma combined with early gastric cancer.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Xanthogranuloma presenting as a form of SMT (submucosal tumor) of the stomach is an extremely rare disease, and diagnosing it preoperatively is difficult. Further accumulation and investigation of this entity is necessary.</p

Cognitive evolution has been explained at the proximate level by shifts in absolute and relative brain volume and at the ultimate level by differences in social and dietary complexity. However, no study has integrated the experimental and phylogenetic approach at the scale required to rigorously test these explanations. Instead, previous research has largely relied on various measures of brain size as proxies for cognitive abilities. We experimentally evaluated these major evolutionary explanations by quantitatively comparing the cognitive performance of 567 individuals representing 36 species on two problem-solving tasks measuring self-control. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that absolute brain volume best predicted performance across species and accounted for considerably more variance than brain volume controlling for body mass. This result corroborates recent advances in evolutionary neurobiology and illustrates the cognitive consequences of cortical reorganization through increases in brain volume. Within primates, dietary breadth but not social group size was a strong predictor of species differences in self-control. Our results implicate robust evolutionary relationships between dietary breadth, absolute brain volume, and self-control. These findings provide a significant first step toward quantifying the primate cognitive phenome and explaining the process of cognitive evolution.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Four-Component Scattering Power Decomposition Algorithm with Rotation of Covariance Matrix Using ALOS-PALSAR Polarimetric Data

    The present study introduces the four-component scattering power decomposition (4-CSPD) algorithm with rotation of covariance matrix, and presents an experimental proof of the equivalence between the 4-CSPD algorithms based on rotation of covariance matrix and coherency matrix. From a theoretical point of view, the 4-CSPD algorithms with rotation of the two matrices are identical. Although it seems obvious, no experimental evidence has yet been presented. In this paper, using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) data acquired by Phased Array L-band SAR (PALSAR) on board of Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), an experimental proof is presented to show that both algorithms indeed produce identical results

    Clinical Characteristics of Transient Ischemic Attack Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: Analyses of a Multicenter Retrospective Study

    Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an important risk factor for transient ischemic attack (TIA). However, little is known about the characteristics of TIA patients with AF. This study investigated the characteristics of such patients, using data from a retrospective, observational, multicenter study. Methods: TIA patients admitted to 13 stroke centers in Japan within 7 days of onset between January 2008 and December 2009 were included. The present analyses compared baseline characteristics, clinical symptoms, findings from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and clinical outcomes between patients with and without AF (AF and non-AF groups). Results: A total of 464 patients (292 men; mean age 68.5 ± 13.2 years) were registered. Of these, 79 patients (17%) had AF. Patients in the AF group were older (73.9 ± 9.1 vs. 67.4 ± 13.6 years, p = 0.102), a single lesion (23 vs. 10%, p Conclusions: In this study, 17% of our TIA patients had AF. We found an association between the acute ischemic lesion pattern on DWI of a single lesion ≥15 mm and AF in TIA patients. These results might lead to a better diagnosis of TIA patients with AF
