Ferromagnetic Transition in a Caged Compound NdOs2Zn20
AbstractMagnetic properties in a caged compound NdOs2Zn20 have been studied by the measurements of magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility M/B, and specific heat C. The measurements indicate that NdOs2Zn20 shows a structural transition at Ts = 62K and a ferromagnetic transition at TC = 0.6K. The structural transition is also observed in the La counter-part LaOs2Zn20 at Ts = 151K. The results of M (T)/B, M (B), and C(T) of NdOs2Zn20 are reproduced by a crystalline electrical field scheme with a Kramers doublet ground state
Temperature-dependent free radical reaction in water
Temperature-dependent free radical reactions were investigated using nitroxyl radicals as redox probes. Reactions of two types of nitroxyl radicals, TEMPOL (4-hydroxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl) and carbamoyl-PROXYL (3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine-N-oxyl), were tested in this paper. Heating a solution containing a nitroxyl radical and a reduced form of glutathione (GSH) caused temperature-dependent decay of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal of the nitroxyl radical. Heating a solution of the corresponding hydroxylamine form of the nitroxyl radical showed EPR signal recovery. The GSH-dependent reduction of nitroxyl radicals at 70°C was suppressed by antioxidants, spin trapping agents, and/or bubbling N2 gas, although heating carbamoyl-PROXYL with GSH showed temporarily enhanced signal decay by bubbling N2 gas. Since SOD could restrict the GSH-dependent EPR signal decay of TEMPOL, O2•− is related with this reaction. O2•− was probably generated from dissolved oxygen in the reaction mixture. Oxidation of the hydroxylamines at 70°C was also suppressed by bubbling N2 gas. Heating a solution of spin trapping agent, DMPO (5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide) showed a temperature-dependent increase of the EPR signal of the hydroxyl radical adduct of DMPO. Synthesis of hydroxyl radical adduct of DMPO at 70°C was suppressed by antioxidants and/or bubbling N2 gas. The results suggested that heating an aqueous solution containing oxygen can generate O2•−
X-Ray Observation of Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Source, HESS J1745-303, with Suzaku
Suzaku observations of a TeV unidentified (unID) source, HESS J1745-303, are
presented. A possible excess of neutral iron line emission is discovered, and
is likely associated with the main part of HESS J1745-303, named "region A". It
may be an X-ray reflection nebula where the X-rays from previous Galactic
Center (GC) activity are reflected by a molecular cloud. This result further
strengthens the assumption that the molecular cloud which is spatially
coincident with region A of HESS J1745-303 is located in the GC region. The TeV
emission from molecular clouds is reminiscent of the diffuse TeV gamma-rays
from the GC giant molecular clouds, and it could have the same emission
mechanism. With deep exposure mapping observations by Suzaku, a tight
upper-limit on the 2-10 keV continuum diffuse emission from region A is
obtained, as 2.1x10^-13ergs s^-1cm^-2. The flux ratio between 1-10 TeV and 2-10
keV is larger than 4. Possible scenarios to reproduce wide-band spectra from
keV to TeV are examined. Thermal X-rays from nearby two old supernova remnants,
G359.0-0.9 and G359.1-0.5, are detected, and their emission properties are well
determined in the present study with deep exposure.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, ApJ accepte
False vocal cord perforation with abscess treated by negative pressure wound therapy
Perforation of the larynx is very rare but may result in severe airway complications that include pneumothorax, pneumonia, mediastinitis, and retropharyngeal abscess. If conservative treatment fails, aggressive treatments including reconstructive surgery with pedicle flap are considered. Negative pressure wound therapy has been used for large skin defects, necrotizing fasciitis, pharyngocutaneous fistula, stoma dehiscence, osteoradionecrosis of the mandible, chyle fistula, flap failure, and lymphangioma in the field of head and neck surgery. We report a case of false vocal cord perforation with abscess successfully treated by negative pressure wound therapy after abscess treatment. The result suggests that negative pressure wound therapy can be an alternative or adjunctive approach for larynx perforation when the perforation is difficult to close after conservative therapy
A Search for Near-Infrared Emission From the Halo of NGC 5907 at Radii of 10 kpc to 30 kpc
We present a search for near-infrared (3.5-5 micron) emission from baryonic
dark matter in the form of low-mass stars and/or brown dwarfs in the halo of
the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907. The observations were made using a
256 by 256 InSb array with a pixel scale of 17" at the focus of a
liquid-helium-cooled telescope carried above the Earth's atmosphere by a
sounding rocket. In contrast to previous experiments which have detected a halo
around NGC 5907 in the V, R, I, J and K bands at galactic radii 6kpc < r <
10kpc, our search finds no evidence for emission from a halo at 10kpc < r <
30kpc. Assuming a halo mass density scaling as r^(-2), which is consistent with
the flat rotation curves that are observed out to radii of 32kpc, the lower
limit of the mass-to-light ratio at 3.5-5 microns for the halo of NGC 5907 is
250 (2 sigma) in solar units. This is comparable to the lower limit we have
found previously for NGC 4565 (Uemizu et al. 1998). Based on recent models, our
non-detection implies that hydrogen- burning stars contribute < 15% of the mass
of the dark halo of NGC 5907. Our results are consistent with the previous
detection of extended emission at r < 10kpc if the latter is caused by a
stellar population that has been ejected from the disk because of tidal
interactions. We conclude that the dark halo of NGC 5907, which is evident from
rotation curves that extend far beyond 10kpc, is not comprised of hydrogen
burning stars.Comment: 12 pages, LateX, plus 6 ps figures. Accepted by ApJ. minor changes,
