The political economy of european banking union

    No full text
The decision to establish a banking union was the Eurozone's fundamental response to the Euro area sovereign debt crisis, with a view to break the vicious circle between banks and sovereigns in the Euro Periphery. But its institutional regime was quite different compared to the initial vision presented in the so-called 'Four EU Presidents Report'. The objective of this thesis is to shed light on the institutional choices that have been made in the context of banking union. Thus, it initially attempts to give prominence to the national interests that influenced the national preferences formation of the main Member States (Germany, France, Spain, Italy) regarding the degree of supranational governance and the degree of risk sharing in the three pillars of the banking union (Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM), European Deposit Insurance Scheme (EDIS)). Next, it examines the impact of asymmetric interdependence in the banking union negotiations to explain its institutional form. The theory of liberal intergovernmentalism is the theoretical framework within which empirical data is analyzed with a view to provide general conclusions.Η απόφαση εγκαθίδρυσης τραπεζικής ένωσης αποτέλεσε την κύρια απάντηση της Ευρωζώνης στην ευρωπαϊκή κρίση δημοσίου χρέους, αποσκοπώντας στο σπάσιμο του φαύλου κύκλου μεταξύ των προβληματικών τραπεζών και των αδύναμων δημοσιονομικά χωρών. Local germplasm may be the basis for genetic improvement for sustainability and resilience, yet little is known about Greek peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] local genetic resources. The aims of the present study were to entail a prospection in the mainland and islands of Greece for local traditional and underutilized germplasm and study their genetic and morphological variation and susceptibility to shoot blight from Cylindrocarpon destructans and Monilinia laxa. A total of 32 peach cultivars/accessions were prospected from the mainland (Imathia and Magnesia) and islands (Andros, Ikaria, Kythira, Lesvos and Samos) of Greece. Leaf and fruit morphological characterization was made in situ and ex situ using 42 qualitative and quantitative morphological descriptors. Nine clones of ‘Lemonato’, isolated in Magnesia, with differing ripening times, were found to vary in leaf and fruit phenotypic traits. The local peach genotypes were separated from 12 old foreign cultivars, in 8 out of the 42 leaf and fruit phenotypic traits studied. We observed greater lesion damages from C. destructans than M. laxa. Local cultivars had greater resistance to Cylindrocarpon destructans than foreign cultivars, with ‘Lemonato Andrea’, ‘Daggalakou’ and ‘Papagianni’ exhibiting the greatest resistance. Genetic characterization was performed in the studied local and foreign peach cultivars/accessions, using eight Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSRs), resulting in a total of 404 bands. Analysis of molecular variance and principal coordinates analysis revealed moderate to low genetic diversity among the peach cultivars, and three distinct clusters were formed. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis was implemented for the association study between morphological traits and the ISSR markers, revealing several markers that are statistically and significantly correlated with fruits’ traits. The obtained results could be valuable for breeding programs and future research on peach

Fibrous hydroxyapatite-carbon nanotube composites by chemical vapor deposition:In situ fabrication, structural and morphological characterization

<p>Fibrous hydroxyapatite (HA)-carbon nanotube composites were synthesized by the catalytic decomposition of acetylene over Fe-Co bimetallic catalysts supported on the fibrous HA. Two forms of fibrous HA (distinct needle-like monocrystals and spherulitic aggregates of needles) were synthesized using a simple precipitation method and loaded with bimetallic catalysts (from 2 up to 20 wt%) by a wet chemical impregnation method. The HA supported catalysts were evaluated for the in situ growth of carbon nanotubes using the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method. The effect of reaction temperature and metal loading on the yield, structural perfection and morphology of the carbon products were investigated using a combination of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The results revealed that both the selection of the growing conditions and the metal loading determine the yield and overall quality of the synthesized carbon nanotubes, which exhibit high graphitization degree when synthesized in high yields. Identification of divergent isolates of cherry latent virus 1 in Greek sweet cherry orchards

    No full text
In this study, samples collected from eight sweet cherry trees in northern Greece were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing for the presence of viruses. Bioinformatic analysis revealed the presence of divergent isolates of cherry latent virus 1 (CLV-1), a recently identified trichovirus in a sweet cherry accession imported into the USA from the Republic of Georgia. The complete genome sequences of seven CLV-1 isolates were determined, and phylogenetic analysis indicated that they belonged to a separate clade from the previously characterized Georgian isolate. A small-scale survey confirmed the presence of CLV-1 in 47 out of 151 sweet cherry samples tested, and partial sequencing of 15 isolates showed a high degree of nucleotide sequence similarity among them.Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, under the call RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATEOperational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, under the call RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVAT

Early arrhythmia recurrence after cryoballoon ablation in atrial fibrillation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Introduction Early arrhythmia recurrence within the 3-month blanking period is a common event that historically has been attributed to reversible phenomena. While its mechanistic links remain obscure, accumulating evidence support the argument of shortening the blanking period. We aimed to elucidate the association between early and late arrhythmia recurrence after atrial fibrillation cryoablation. Methods The MEDLINE database, ClinicalTrials. gov, medRxiv, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies evaluating early and late arrhythmia recurrence rates in patients undergoing cryoablation for atrial fibrillation. Data were pooled by meta-analysis using a random-effects model. The primary endpoint was late arrhythmia recurrence. Results Early arrhythmia recurrence was found predictive of decreased arrhythmia-free survival after evaluating 3975 patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation who underwent cryoablation (odds ratio [OR]: 5.31; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.75-7.51). This pattern remained unchanged after subanalyzing atrial fibrillation type (paroxysmal; OR: 7.16; 95% CI: 4.40-11.65 and persistent; OR: 7.63; 95% CI: 3.62-16.07) as well as cryoablation catheter generation (first generation; OR: 5.15, 95% CI: 2.39-11.11 and advanced generation; OR: 5.83, 95% CI: 3.68-9.23). Studies permitting antiarrhythmic drug utilization during the blanking period or examining early recurrence as a secondary outcome were found to be a significant source of statistical heterogeneity. Conclusion Our findings suggest that early arrhythmia recurrence is predictive of late outcomes after cryoablation for atrial fibrillation. Identifying which patients deserve earlier reintervention is an open research avenue

Inflammatory Biomarkers in Coronary Artery Ectasia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Isolated coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is a relatively rare clinical entity, the pathogenesis of which is poorly understood. More and more evidence is accumulating to suggest a critical inflammatory component. We aimed to elucidate any association between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and coronary artery ectasia. A systematic MEDLINE database, ClinicalTrials.gov, medRxiv, Scopus and Cochrane Library search was conducted: 50 studies were deemed relevant, reporting on difference in NLR levels between CAE patients and controls (primary endpoint) and/or on high-sensitive CRP, IL-6, TNF-a and RDW levels (secondary endpoint), and were included in our final analysis. (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021224195). All inflammatory biomarkers under investigation were found higher in coronary artery ectasia patients as compared to healthy controls (NLR; SMD = 0.73; 95% CI: 0.27&ndash;1.20, hs-CRP; SMD = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.64&ndash;1.28, IL-6; SMD = 2.68; 95% CI: 0.95&ndash;4.41, TNF-a; SMD = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.24&ndash;0.75, RDW; SMD = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.26&ndash;0.87). The main limitations inherent in this analysis are small case-control studies of moderate quality and high statistical heterogeneity. Our findings underscore that inflammatory dysregulation is implicated in coronary artery ectasia and merits further investigation
