    Mothers Grimm and Other House Held Tales is a body of work that uses fairy tale archetypes and narrative traditions to comment upon tensions and conflicts in sexual self-understanding. This is achieved through a reflection on attitudes that women adopt regarding their own sexuality. Such a reflection is instigated through a presentation of prominent cultural archetypes that exist, no longer as received ideas, but as a bold and entertaining expression of how sex can change our attitude towards those ideas that we often take for granted. Through an assemblage of objects and video, this body of work evokes a domestic setting through the re-creation of the household environment. The viewer is drawn in by fun looking characterizations that, upon first glance, arouses a sense of archetypal nostalgia. However, a closer investigation reveals sardonic humor and associative metaphors that refer to sexual themes, some situated in dark places

    This research arises from serious concerns surrounding teaching sustainability, given the everyday challenges teachers face as they learn and thrive. Internationally, teacher recruitment and retention are in crisis. COVID-19 has added to previous workloads resulting in many teachers describing their teaching experience as detrimental to their commitment, well-being, and health. This paper examines one teacher’s professional development efforts to promote her resilience via self-study research methodology. The findings suggest that an intentional focus on developing resilience through self-study positively impacted teaching practices. As a result, the authors suggest that teachers take charge of their resilience by conducting their own self-study

    Environmental and circadian regulation combine to shape the rhythmic selenoproteome

    The circadian clock orchestrates an organism’s endogenous processes with environmental 24 h cycles. Redox homeostasis and the circadian clock regulate one another to negate the potential effects of our planet’s light/dark cycle on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and attain homeostasis. Selenoproteins are an important class of redox-related enzymes that have a selenocysteine residue in the active site. This study reports functional understanding of how environmental and endogenous circadian rhythms integrate to shape the selenoproteome in a model eukaryotic cell. We mined quantitative proteomic data for the 24 selenoproteins of the picoeukaryote Ostreococcus tauri across time series, under environmentally rhythmic entrained conditions of light/dark (LD) cycles, compared to constant circadian conditions of constant light (LL). We found an overrepresentation of selenoproteins among rhythmic proteins under LL, but an underrepresentation under LD conditions. Rhythmic selenoproteins under LL that reach peak abundance later in the day showed a greater relative amplitude of oscillations than those that peak early in the day. Under LD, amplitude did not correlate with peak phase; however, we identified high-amplitude selenium uptake rhythms under LD but not LL conditions. Selenium deprivation induced strong qualitative defects in clock gene expression under LD but not LL conditions. Overall, the clear conclusion is that the circadian and environmental cycles exert differential effects on the selenoproteome, and that the combination of the two enables homeostasis. Selenoproteins may therefore play an important role in the cellular response to reactive oxygen species that form as a consequence of the transitions between light and dark

    At the request of the Accountability Review Council, Research for Action identified effective organizational practices used by better performing schools serving substantial numbers of low income middle and high school students in the School District of Philadelphia. These practices are organized into three spheres: Conditions for Teaching, Student-Centered School Community, and Instructional Program. For each sphere, the report offers broad strategies and specific practices to enact the strategies. Nuanced school case studies show how the practices can work synergistically and coherently in schools to help students succeed

First, what are the key processes involved in planning. Second, what content do these processes work best in. This paper examines two key processes of planning: forecasting and identifying key causes. Second, this article examines two major forms of content including case-based reasoning and principle-based reasoning. It is concluded that the best process and content depend on the type of outcome desired and the type of individual being trained

    IL-23 Contributes to Control of Chronic Helicobacter Pylori Infection and the Development of T Helper Responses in a Mouse Model1

    The immune response to Helicobacter pylori involves a mixed T helper-1, T helper-2, and T helper-17 response. It has been suggested that T helper cells contribute to the gastric inflammatory response during infection, and that T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 17 (Th17) subsets may be required for control of H. pylori colonization in the stomach. The relative contributions of these subsets to gastritis and control of infection are still under investigation. IL-23 plays a role in stabilizing and expanding Th17 cell cytokine expression. Expression of IL-23, which is induced in dendritic cells and macrophages following co-culture with H. pylori, has also been reported to increase during H. pylori infection in humans and animal models. To investigate the role of IL-23 in H. pylori, we infected IL-23p19 deficient mice (IL-23−/−) and wild-type littermates with H. pylori strain SS1. At various time points post-infection, we assessed colonization, gastric inflammation, and cytokine profiles in the gastric tissue. Specifically, H. pylori-infected IL-23−/− mice have higher levels of H. pylori in their stomachs, significantly less chronic gastritis, and reduced expression of IL-17 and IFNγ compared to H. pylori-infected wild-type mice. While many of these differences were significant, the H. pylori infected IL-23−/− had mild increases in our measurements of disease severity. Our results indicate that IL-23 plays a role in the activation of the immune response and induction of gastritis in response to H. pylori by contributing to the control of infection and severity of gastritis

Molecular Vision, 17, 3392–3405.Purpose: To characterize various properties of a physiologically-relevant artificial tear solution (ATS) containing a range of tear film components within a complex salt solution, and to measure contact lens parameters and lipid deposition of a variety of contact lens materials after incubation in this ATS.Methods: A complex ATS was developed that contains a range of salts, proteins, lipids, mucin, and other tear film constituents in tear-film relevant concentrations. This ATS was tested to confirm that its pH, osmolality, surface tension, and homogeneity are similar to human tears and remain so throughout the material incubation process, for up to 4 weeks. To confirm that silicone hydrogel and conventional hydrogel contact lens materials do not alter in physical characteristics beyond what is allowed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 18369–2. The diameter, center thickness, and calculated base curve were measured for five different lens materials directly out of the blister pack, after a rinse in saline and then following a two week incubation in the modified ATS. To test the ATS and the effect of its composition on lipid deposition, two lens materials were incubated in the ATS and a modified version for several time points. Both ATS solutions contained trace amounts of carbon-14 cholesterol and phosphatidylcholine, such that deposition of these specific lipids could be quantified using standard methods.Results: This ATS is a complex mixture that remains stable at physiologically relevant pH (7.3–7.6), osmolality (304–306 mmol/kg), surface tension (40–46 dynes/cm) and homogeneity over an incubation period of three weeks or more. The physical parameters of the lenses tested showed no changes beyond that allowed by the ISO guidelines. Incubations with the ATS found that balafilcon A lenses deposit significantly more cholesterol and phosphatidylcholine than omafilcon A lenses (p<0.05) and that removing lactoferrin and immunoglobulin G from the ATS can significantly decrease the mass of lipid deposited.Conclusions: This paper describes a novel complex artificial tear solution specially designed for in-vial incubation of contact lens materials. This solution was stable and did not adversely affect the physical parameters of the soft contact lenses incubated within it and showed that lipid deposition was responsive to changes in ATS composition.This study was sponsored by ALCON Research Ltd.
