Competences in Project Management: A Case Study in Osaka Institute of Technology

    Get PDF
This chapter briefly explains the distributed project management of four joint departments for first-grade joint project-based learning (PBL). That is, conventional studies and purpose, capital, competence and ability of four kinds of distributed project management were presented, and relations among them are shown after describing background (included prehistory of PBL in Osaka Institute of Technology (O.I.T.)). Then, consideration and analysis about communication, interaction, cooperation, merit, week-point, effect and inference were discussed. Some case studies were described about open innovation and competences in stakeholder management. They were distinctive and superior in first-grade PBL of O.I.T. Finally, some future themes were presented

Use of Cap Analysis Gene Expression to detect human papillomavirus promoter activity patterns at different disease stages

Transcription of human papillomavirus (HPV) genes proceeds unidirectionally from multiple promoters. Direct profiling of transcription start sites (TSSs) by Cap Analysis Gene Expression (CAGE) is a powerful strategy for examining individual HPV promoter activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate alterations of viral promoter activity during infection using CAGE technology. We used CAGE-based sequencing of 46 primary cervical samples, and quantitatively evaluated TSS patterns in the HPV transcriptome at a single-nucleotide resolution. TSS patterns were classified into two types: early promoter-dominant type (Type A) and late promoter-dominant type (Type B). The Type B pattern was more frequently found in CIN1 and CIN2 lesions than in CIN3 and cancer samples. We detected transcriptomes from multiple HPV types in five samples. Interestingly, in each sample, the TSS patterns of both HPV types were the same. The viral gene expression pattern was determined by the differentiation status of the epithelial cells, regardless of HPV type. We performed unbiased analyses of TSSs across the HPV genome in clinical samples. Visualising TSS pattern dynamics, including TSS shifts, provides new insights into how HPV infection status relates to disease state

Tsunami run-up heights of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake

Tsunami height survey was conducted immediately after the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake. Results of the survey show that the largest tsunami height was 4 m to the east of Cape Erimo, around Bansei-onsen, and locally at Mabiro. The results also show that the tsunami height distribution of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake is clearly different from that of the 1952 Tokachi-oki earthquake, suggesting the different source areas of the 1952 and 2003 Tokachioki earthquakes. Numerical simulation of tsunami is carried out using the slip distribution estimated by Yamanaka and Kikuchi (2003). The overall pattern of the observed tsunami height distribution along the coast is explained by the computed ones although the observed tsunami heights are slightly smaller. Large later phase observed at the tide gauge in Urakawa is the edge wave propagating from Cape Erimo along the west coast of the Hidaka area. The 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquak

ANATOMICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE SEX ORGANS FROM SLAUGHTERED BULLS IN HOKKAIDO : II. SOME OBSERVATIONS ON REMNANTS OF THE MULLERIAN DUCT

In the course of the post-mortem routine investigation of the sex organs of 19 mature bulls, the present authors encountered 6 cases having remnants of the Mullerian duct. These Mullerian remnants were located on the dorsal surface of the urogenital fold. They seemed to be grouped into two types; one is the tubular type which is characterized by a passway connecting with the urogenital canal, while the other is the small vesicular type without connection to the urogenital canal. Most of the cases belonged to the latter type, only one case belonging to the former type. Microscopically, both types of Mullerian remnants had a narrow central cavity lined with a single layered or stratified epithelium, consisting of cuboid, columnar, flattened and ciliated epithelial cells. Many smaller accessory cavities surrounding the central cavity resembled the female bovine uterine glands. But, the development of the accessory cavities varied from case to case. The lumina of the central and accessory cavities contained secretory products. The wall of the remnants consisted of connective tissues and several layers of smooth muscles. Thus, the histological features of the Mullerian remnant in the bull were very similar not only to those of the immature heifer uterus, but also to the Mullerian remnant observed in the case of "White heifer disease". As regards many problems concerning the rate of incidence, heredity or function of the Mullerian remnants in the bull, much remains to be studied. The present authors are indebted to Inspectors of the Sapporo Abattoir, for their great kindness and to members of the AI centers and farms who kindly sent the clinical data on the bulls used for this investigation

STUDIES ON PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS BY AN ULTRASONIC DOPPLER METHOD : I PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS IN THE PIG AND FETAL HEART RATE CHANGES DURING PREGNANCY

A portable ultrasonic fetal heart detector, Heart-tone Model USD-I (Aloka Co. Ltd., Tokyo), with a 2.25 MHz probe was used for a study of pregnancy diagnosis in swine. The animals to be examined were placed lying on the pen floor with neither fixation nor anesthesia. The probe was gently applied on the skin of the lower abdomen or the flank. Ultrasonic Doppler signals based on the fetal circulation were heard by the operator and at the same time recorded on magnetic tapes to aid fetal heart rate calculation. The maternal circulation was easily distinguishable from the fetal circulation by the considerably slower rhythm of the former. The accuracy of diagnosis was based on delivery. A total of 83 experiments were carried out on 70 sows of 4 different breeds from 22 days post-coitum to the full term. Before 30 days post-coitum, the accuracy rate for pregnancy diagnosis was not satisfactory (58.3%). However, it became higher during the period from 30 to 39 days (81.8%). After 40 days of pregnancy, the accuracy rate of diagnosis reached 100 percent. The earliest detection of pregnancy by this method was in a case of 26 days after copulation. A highly significant negative correlation was observed between the fetal heart rate and the fetal age. The correlation coefficient was- 0.87 (P<0.01). The fetal heart rate became slower in a negative linear regression as gestation progressed ; Y=252.6-0.572X (X=Fetal age, Y=Fetal heart rate)
