    Disequilibrium REE compositions of garnet and zircon in migmatites reflecting different growth timings during single metamorphism (Aoyama area, Ryoke belt, Japan)

    Chemical disequilibrium of coexisting garnet and zircon in pelitic migmatites (Aoyama area, Ryoke belt, SW Japan) is shown by microtextural evidence and their heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns. In zircon, two stages of metamorphic rim growth is observed under cathodoluminescence image, although their SHRIMP UPb zircon ages are similar at ca. 92 Ma. Inner and outer rims of zircon tend to show steep HREE patterns irrespective of the UPb age. The inner rims tend to give higher U content than the outer rims; some rim analyses give various Th/U ratios of 0.02–0.07 compared to the very low (<0.02) values seen in the rest of rim analyses. The higher-Th/U values are ascribed to the mixed analyses between thin prograde domains and thick retrograde overgrowths. Zircon grains with inclusions similar to previously-reported melt inclusions are further enclosed in garnet, supporting the growth of thin zircon domains coexisting with garnet during the prograde metamorphism. Garnet rims are commonly replaced by biotite-plagioclase intergrowths, indicating a back reaction with partial melts. Garnet exhibits decrease in HREE and Y concentrations towards the rim, pointing to its prograde growth. The garnet cores have prograde xenotime inclusions, show steep HREE patterns, and yield growth temperature of ~530–570 °C by a YAG-xenotime thermometer. On the other hand, the garnet rims have no xenotime inclusion and show flat HREE patterns. Rare garnet domains including sillimanite needles also show flat HREE patterns and low Y concentrations, which is interpreted as a product of dehydration melting consuming biotite and sillimanite at near-peak P-T conditions (~800 °C and ~0.5 GPa). One such garnet domain gives nearly-equilibrium REE distribution pattern when paired with the matrix zircon rims. Retrograde xenotime is present in the cracks in garnet and in the biotite-plagioclase intergrowths, suggesting that retrograde breakdown of garnet released HREE and Y to form it. Considering the availability of HREE and Zr and presence of melt inclusions in zircon rims, most part of the zircon rims with positive HREE patterns likely grew during the melt crystallization stage, meaning that the zircon rims and presently-preserved garnet domains did not grow in equilibrium. The above scenario was tested by the array plot analysis and it gave a result consistent with microtextural and traditional REE distribution constraints. Combination of microtextural and the array plot analyses may become a powerful tool to reliably correlate the zircon ages to the P-T evolution of the high-grade metamorphic rocks

    Learning Domain Invariant Representations by Joint Wasserstein Distance Minimization

    Domain shifts in the training data are common in practical applications of machine learning, they occur for instance when the data is coming from different sources. Ideally, a ML model should work well independently of these shifts, for example, by learning a domain-invariant representation. Moreover, privacy concerns regarding the source also require a domain-invariant representation. In this work, we provide theoretical results that link domain invariant representations -- measured by the Wasserstein distance on the joint distributions -- to a practical semi-supervised learning objective based on a cross-entropy classifier and a novel domain critic. Quantitative experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach is indeed able to practically learn such an invariant representation (between two domains), and the latter also supports models with higher predictive accuracy on both domains, comparing favorably to existing techniques.Comment: 20 pages including appendix.     Water balance in healthy and handicapped adults

    The body’s water balance is changed by food and beverage intake, metabolism, and excretion. In this study, we performed a cross-sectional study that investigated the changes of water intake and water output in healthy Japanese young and elderly people and handicapped adults. Water balance was assessed by water intake from foods and beverages, metabolic water production, non-renal water losses (NRWL), and urine volume. Most of the parameters did not change with aging in healthy adults. Estimated total water intake (ml / kg / day) increased with aging. In the healthy men, healthy women, and handicapped adults, daily water intake (median [interquartile range]) accounted for 49.4 (41.4-59.9) ml / kg, 42.9 (38.7-51.8) ml / kg, and 50.9 (43.8-74.0) ml / kg, respectively. Water loss from the kidney accounted for 19.2 (16.2-29.2) ml / kg, 22.0 (16.2-26.6) ml / kg, and 27.5 (22.7- 47.2) ml / kg, respectively. NRWL accounted for 26.6 (18.5-35.2) ml / kg, 22.4 (16.2-28.8) ml / kg, and 23.5 (19.8-28.5) ml / kg, respectively. Our findings suggest that a daily total water intake of more than 50-55 ml / kg is required to prevent dehydration in healthy and handicapped adults

    Charge order with unusual star-of-David lattice in monolayer NbTe2

    Interplay between fermiology and electron correlation is crucial for realizing exotic quantum phases. Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) 1T-TaS2 has sparked a tremendous attention owing to its unique Mott-insulating phase coexisting with the charge-density wave (CDW). However, how the fermiology and electron correlation are associated with such properties has yet to be claried. Here we demonstrate that monolayer 1T-NbTe2 is a new class of two-dimensional TMD which has the star-of-David lattice similarly to bulk TaS2 and isostructural monolayer NbSe2, but exhibits a metallic ground state with an unusual lattice periodicity root19xroot19 characterized by the sparsely occupied star-of-David lattice. By using angle-resolved photoemission and scanning-tunneling spectroscopies in combination with first-principles band-structure calculations, we found that the hidden Fermi-surface nesting and associated CDW formation are a primary cause to realize this unique correlated metallic state with no signature of Mott gap. The present result points to a vital role of underlying fermiology to characterize the Mott phase of TMDs.Comment: To be published in Physical Review

    Identifying the true origin of sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia associated with dilated-phase hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A case of successful catheter ablation

    AbstractThis case report describes sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) caused by a large epicardial scar, related to dilated-phase hypertrophic cardiomyopathy mimicking VT originating from the apical septum. VT resolved with epicardial catheter ablation. The exit of the VT circuit suggested that a 12-lead electrocardiogram can be remote with respect to the critical isthmus in this case. In patients with structural heart disease, it is difficult to identify the VT reentrant circuit by surface electrocardiography, which shows only the exit site. VT originating in the epicardium should be considered, even if the suspected origin is another ventricular site

    Towards a greater global understanding of wellbeing: A proposal for a more inclusive measure

    The science of wellbeing has come a long way from the early days of measuring wellbeing via a nation’s GDP, and wellbeing measures and concepts continue to proliferate to capture its various elements. Yet, much of this activity has reflected concepts from Western cultures, despite the emphasis placed on wellbeing in all corners of the globe. To meet the challenges and opportunities arising from cross-disciplinary research worldwide, the Well-Being for Planet Earth Foundation and the Gallup World Poll have joined forces to add more culturally relevant constructs and questions to existing Gallup modules. In this white paper, we review the discussion from the international well-being summit in Kyoto, Japan (August 2019), where nine such additions were proposed and highlight why a more global view of wellbeing is needed. Overall, the new items reflect a richer view of wellbeing than life satisfaction alone and include hedonic and eudaimonic facets of wellbeing, social wellbeing, the role of culture, community, nature, and governance. These additions allow for the measurement of a broader conceptualization of wellbeing, more refined and nuanced cross-cultural comparisons, and facilitate a better examination of the causes of variation in global wellbeing. The new Gallup World Poll additions will be trialled in 2020, with additional inclusions from this summit to be made in 2021

    Biological and Biochemical Studies on Melanogenesis and M elanoma Cells

    For the previous ten years, we have been studying intracellular transport of melanosoma1 proteins and their biological and biochemical functions in melanoma cells. Melanosoma1 proteins,tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TYRP1) and TYRP2/DOPAchrome tautomerase (DCT), gp100/Pme117 are transported from the trans-Golgi network (TGN) to earlystage melanosomes via endosoma1 compartments. We suggest that Rab7 is involved in the vesicular transport of tyrosinase and TYRP1 and in the melanogenesis through the regulation of gp100/Pme117 maturation. TYRP1 and TYRP 2/DCT were shown to play an essential role in suppressing TYR-mediated cytotoxicity in melanocytic cells, possibly through interaction with TYR in melanosomes. We also studied apoptotic cell death of melanoma cells and death mediators. Among p53 family members, p51A (p63) induced apoptosis in both wild-type and mutant p53-expressing melanoma cells more significantly than p53 and 73β. Interferon(IFN) exerts anti-tumor activities possibly by regulating IFN-stimulated genes. Caspase-2 activation was commonly associated with induction of apoptosis in IFN一β一sensitive melanoma cells. The diacylglycero1 kinase (DGK) , expressed in several human melanoma cell lines but not in melanocytes, was a novel positive regulator of NF-KB, which suppresses TNF一α一induced melanoma cell apoptosis
