The present study has been designed and formulated to discover the level of academic achievement and personality development of students studying in KGBVs. Also, it was done to study the health facilities available in KGBVs. The research was also intended to study the teachers’ attitude towards the education of girls studying in KGBVs, and the views of principals, students, and parents regarding basic facilities, amenities, security, and other things available in KGBVs. Focus on girl child is very the need of the present time . The rate of girls education has generally been low in India . An important step has been taken by the government of India in the 10th five year plan 2002-2007 to over come the educational back ward ness of girls in the field of education in the form of KGBV’s. This is a component of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan . The central government ensured the implementation of the KGBV Scheme under the provision of residential school for girls in August in-2004. According to the 2001 census , the female literacy rate is less than the national female literacy rate and the gender gap in education is more than the national gender gap . 200 KGBV ( Given to girls ) is launched in Rajasthan for upgradation of girl education .On behalf of the department of Rajasthan state , KGBV and Sharde Girls school has been merged and now named as KGBV ( Type-IV ) hence , in 2019 , this type of KGBV – One , Three , & Four have been established in the state now the admission capacity of girls have been increased also . Arrangements have been made to give the admission capacity of 100-200 girls to the state . The Government of India has launched the import school which promotes girls education . Started under a series under KGBV’S the central and state government bear the expenditure in the rate of 75: 25 . These schools are established in those development blocks where drop out or out of school in Vidyalaya is predominantly academically weak and has a high number of minority girls from SC ,ST , OBC , and remote areas . Each school aims to provide education from 6th to 12th class by providing residential arrangement to the girls .The KGBV has been successful as a mile stone and a meaningful effort for increasing the education and development of girls belonging to extremely back ward SC ,ST ,OBC, Minority community in the developed areas with the joint cooperation of the central / State governmen

OBJECTIVE: To undertake a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genetic variants for stroke in an Indian population. METHODS: In a hospital-based case-control study, 8 teaching hospitals in India recruited 4,088 participants, including 1,609 stroke cases. Imputed genetic variants were tested for association with stroke subtypes using both single-marker and gene-based tests. Association with vascular risk factors was performed with logistic regression. Various databases were searched for replication, functional annotation, and association with related traits. Status of candidate genes previously reported in the Indian population was also checked. RESULTS: Associations of vascular risk factors with stroke were similar to previous reports and show modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, and alcohol consumption as having the highest effect. Single-marker–based association revealed 2 loci for cardioembolic stroke (1p21 and 16q24), 2 for small vessel disease stroke (3p26 and 16p13), and 4 for hemorrhagic stroke (3q24, 5q33, 6q13, and 19q13) at p < 5 × 10(−8). The index single nucleotide polymorphism of 1p21 is an expression quantitative trait locus (p(lowest) = 1.74 × 10(−58)) for RWDD3 involved in SUMOylation and is associated with platelet distribution width (1.15 × 10(−9)) and 18-carbon fatty acid metabolism (p = 7.36 × 10(−12)). In gene-based analysis, we identified 3 genes (SLC17A2, FAM73A, and OR52L1) at p < 2.7 × 10(−6). Eleven of 32 candidate gene loci studied in an Indian population replicated (p < 0.05), and 21 of 32 loci identified through previous GWAS replicated according to directionality of effect. CONCLUSIONS: This GWAS of stroke in an Indian population identified novel loci and replicated previously known loci. Genetic variants in the SUMOylation pathway, which has been implicated in brain ischemia, were identified for association with stroke

Settlement and Integration Needs of Skilled Immigrants in Calgary: A Mixed Methods Study

No full text
There is a significant body of scholarship on the settlement and integration of immigrants in Canada. However, most knowledge in this domain comes from government and stakeholders’ reports that are based on input from immigrants in general. This information does not focus specifically on skilled immigrants, nor does it include those in the service sector responsible for service provision of this population. Importantly, there is limited academic research available in this domain. Currently, Alberta is experiencing a unique economic climate. Most economic indicators suggest that from 2015 to 2016, Alberta experienced the worst recession in a generation, caused by the steepest and most prolonged oil price shock in Canadian history. Broader economic trends show that the integration of immigrants is affected by the economic conditions they face in their host countries. Further, there is evidence that immigrants who arrive during unfavourable economic conditions experience a permanent disadvantage in integration. Therefore, the settlement and integration of skilled immigrants warrant explicit attention at this critical point in time. Calgary is the largest city in Alberta. Not only do many immigrants arriving in Alberta choose to settle in Calgary, it is also the fourth most sought-after destination for immigrants in Canada. With an increasing number of immigrants arriving in Calgary to work and live, there is a need to better understand how immigrant services in the city support skilled immigrants and contribute to create a positive environment for their settlement and integration in Calgary. The purpose of this study was to understand the settlement and integration needs of skilled immigrants in Calgary and to identify if there are any needs that are not addressed by the services offered by the major immigrant serving agencies in the city. Primarily, the focus of the study was (1) to understand the settlement and integration needs of skilled immigrants in Calgary and (2) to identify if there are gaps in the settlement and integration services for skilled immigrants in Calgary. The study employed a convergent parallel mixed methods design in which qualitative data provided an in-depth exploration of the settlement and integration needs of skilled immigrants in Calgary as understood by immigrant serving agencies in the city, and the quantitative data focused on gaining an understanding about the areas of unmet settlement and integration needs as experienced by skilled immigrants in Calgary. I conducted 10 interviews with immigrant services providers in Calgary to collect qualitative data and analyzed the data using thematic analysis. For the quantitative analysis, I collected 120 survey responses from skilled immigrants who were residents of Calgary and who came to Canada under the Federal Skilled Worker Program. I performed chi-square analysis to reveal any significant relationship between survey items. Findings enhance our understanding of challenges faced by skilled immigrants in Calgary, identify the needs experienced by skilled immigrants in facing those challenges, highlight the gaps in the existing social services, and inform the development and implementation of effective settlement services and programs for skilled immigrants in Calgary

German for English Speakers: The Use of the L1 in L2 Vocabulary Acquisition

No full text
Several studies have investigated the use of the first language (L1) in second language (L2) vocabulary teaching and learning. But so far, there is a scarcity of research that looks into this issue from the perspective of English learners of German. With the aim to fill this gap, a study was carried out that compares the effectiveness of the two experimental teaching conditions: L2 vocabulary instruction using L1 translation equivalents vs. L2 vocabulary instruction using L2 definitions of L2 words. This study also examines the role of the L2 proficiency level in the recall and retention of the L2 words under the two conditions. The participants were English learners of German. The results were compared across three different proficiency levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The research findings suggest that the use of the L1 facilitates the learning of the new L2 words and enhances the recall and retention of the newly learned L2 words

Settlement and Integration Needs of Skilled Immigrants in Canada

It is often believed that the settlement and integration of skilled immigrants is moderately easy in Canada, and that skilled immigrants do well in Canada after a brief adjustment period. However, numerous barriers prevent the effective integration of skilled immigrants in the mainstream society. Despite being famous for its Federal Skilled Worker Program, which includes the immigration of skilled workers through Express Entry, Canada shows disappointing results in the economic and social outcomes of the integration of skilled immigrants. This has socioeconomic implications for the immigrants and affects their health and wellbeing. Therefore, there is a need for all those who are involved with immigrant integration to explore and be conversant about the contexts and issues faced by skilled newcomers in Canada. In reviewing the academic and grey literature on the settlement and integration of skilled immigrants in Canada, this paper highlights the challenges faced by skilled immigrants in Canada and the needs experienced by them in facing these challenges. It provides an overview of the experiences and expectations of skilled immigrants related to their settlement and integration in Canada. This paper indicates a need to evaluate the availability of immigrant services focused on skilled immigrants and the effectiveness of the existing support offered to them by various government and non-government agencies

Pragmatism as a Research Paradigm and Its Implications for Social Work Research

No full text
Debates around the issues of knowledge of, and for, social work and other social justice–oriented professions are not uncommon. More prevalent are the discussions around the ways by which social work knowledge is obtained. In recent years, social work scholars have drawn on the epistemology of pragmatism to present a case for its value in the creation of knowledge for social work and other social justice–oriented professions. The primary focus of this essay is on providing a critical review and synthesis of the literature regarding pragmatism as a research paradigm. In this essay, we analyze the major philosophical underpinnings and methodological challenges associated with pragmatism, synthesize the works of scholars who have contributed to the understanding of pragmatism as a research paradigm, articulate our thoughts about how pragmatism fits within social work research, and illustrate how it is linked to the pursuit of social justice. This article brings together a variety of perspectives to argue that pragmatism has the potential to closely engage and empower marginalized and oppressed communities and provide hard evidence for the macro level discourse

Background and Objectives: Therapeutic plasma exchange has been in use to treat a variety of diseases and for the purpose of rational decision-making, the American Society for Apheresis has proposed guidelines for the same. The present study was undertaken to study various aspects of the plasma exchange facility in a tertiary care center at Uttarakhand, India. Methods: The relevant demographical details (age, sex, BMI), clinical history of patient (any previous illness, any chromic disease, medications etc.), relevant investigations performed (basic haematology and immunology tests), plasma exchange procedure notes (total time taken, any adverse reactions noted), and replacement fluids used (type and amount used) were recorded and analyzed. Results: A total of 157 plasma exchange procedures were performed on 47 patients. Of these, maximum procedures were done for patients with Guillain–Barre syndrome (GBS), myasthenic crisis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The other indications were multiple myeloma, plasma cell dyscrasia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and DIC after scrub typhus and dengue. The most common adverse reaction noted was urticaria (8/19), followed by perioral tingling (3/19) and hypotension (7/19). Interpretation and Conclusions: Fifteen out of 17 patients suffering from GBS and all patients of myasthenic crisis showed recovery, however, one patient of myasthenia gravis did not show immediate improvement, but recovered after some delay. Among the patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura with neurological manifestations, 3 out of 5 patients showed significant improvement. Patients who presented with other indications of plasma exchange also showed clinical benefits and the procedure resulted in quick recovery
