What teacher needs to know about STEM-Nonfiction

    Get PDF
What educators need to know about STEM nonfiction is covered in this presentation. Teaching subject like maths, science, technology, and engineering isn’t always mean going to lab or completing written worksheets. Different non-fiction book types are preferred by different children, and some students are better suited to specific subjects than others. Unlike traditional non-fiction, there isn\u27t just one set of guidelines for selecting books for learners. Therefore, understanding the categories of STEM nonfiction can help educators with exploring science, technology, engineering, and maths

    Get PDF
Objective: To produce cyclodextrin (CD) from Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) producing bacteria isolated from various samples and to study its effect on drug solubility. Methods: CGTase producing bacteria were isolated from various samples viz. Soil, rotten potatoes, and stale corn flour dough using Horikoshi - phenolphthalein agar. All the isolates were screened for CGTase activity. Isolate showing highest CGTase activity was characterized morphologically and biochemically. CD was produced using CGTase which was further used for drug solubility studies. Results: A total of fifty samples were studied of which 20 bacterial isolates showed the presence of halo around them. Upon further screening, the culture supernatant of 12 isolates showed cyclization activity, of which CD 18 strain produced highest amount of CGTase. Morphological and biochemical characterization revealed that the isolate belonged to Bacillus sp. The isolate showed maximum growth, reducing sugars 0.724 mg/ml and maximum enzymatic activity for dextrinisation as well as cyclisation viz. 9.45 U/ml and 7.41 U/ml respectively after 48 hrs of incubation. Thus, Bacillus sp. CD 18 was used to produce CGTase, which was further used for the production of CD. CD increased the solubility of acclofenac and paracetamol. Conclusion: Bacteria are regarded as important sources of CGTases. New strains might suit better for industrial production of CGTase after optimizing the various cultures and process parameters

This ethnographic case study presents findings of an 18-month research study focusing on the ways in which families residing in an urban slum were using mobile phones and how this use supported literacy practices. Data collection included participant observations and interviews with 42 participants including parents, children and community members. Results of the data analysis indicated that in this urban slum, most participants owned a mobile phone which provided multiple entry points to learning. The phones ushered in new ways of brokering knowledge where children acted as ‘experts’ and enabled parents to perform everyday tasks while parents mediated as cultural brokers and fostered religious and cultural practices and knowledge of the mother tongue. The implications of the study point to the evolving nature of literacy practices, the versatility of the device, the uneven landscape of smartphone use and the limitations posed by the schooling contexts

Play goes digital : role of early childhood educators

    Get PDF
The age of a child determines the kind of play he/she will engage in, for example, solitary play, constructive play, parallel play, and so on. Many of these conceptualisations tend to consider play as a universal construct unfolding in predictable ways as per the child's biological age. However, what is missing from this thinking is how the increasing access to new media technologies and tools, such as tablets, mobile phones and computers, has altered play opportunities for children

Interspecific hybridization is important for genetic enhancement of crop plants. The present study was conducted to study genetic variation in advanced interspecific lines of mungbean for yield and its component traits, to determine the association among different traits and their contribution towards seed yield through correlation and path coefficient analysis. A set of 64 genotypes including 51 advanced interspecific lines derived from mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) × urdbean (Vigna mungo L. Hepper) and mungbean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) × ricebean (Vignaumbellata Thumb.) crosses and 13 parents (mungbean, urdbean and ricebean) was the experimental material for this study. The mean sums of squares for genotypes were highly significant for all the traits. Mean sum of squares for replications were also highly significant for all traits except days to 50 % flowering, days to maturity and harvest index at 1 % and 5 % level of significance. This indicated substantial magnitude of diversity and variability in the interspecific lines and parents under study, which could be further exploited. High to moderate PCV and GCV along with high heritability and genetic advance was observed for biological yield per plant, seed yield per plant and plant height, indicating that these traits could be easy targets for phenotypic selection and consequently, may be improved genetically via simple plant selection methods. On the basis of correlation studies, it could be concluded that all the traits under investigation except number of seeds per pod and harvest index were important for selection for yield improvement. Path analysis further revealed that harvest index could also be one of the criteria of selection for higher yield in these interspecific lines

Background: The management of critical illness in pregnancy requires intensive monitoring of obstetric patients in the intensive care unit. Systematic way of surveillance will allow the measurement of outcomes of interest and associated risk factors. Intensive care unit is highly specified and sophisticated area of hospital which is specifically designed, staffed, furnished and equipped, dedicated to the management of critically sick patients, injuries or complications. The aim of this study was to know the frequency of ICU admission in obstetrical patients, to analyse the medical or surgical comorbidity related to obstetrical problems, to segregate the cause of morbidity and to identify the risk reducing strategies. Methods: This observational study was conducted in 40 ICU patients in present institute from 1st December 2016 to 28th February 2019. The present study was divided into two groups in group I, intervention was done first followed by ICU intervention and in group II, ICU stabilization was done first followed by obstetrical intervention. The parameters noted were age, parity, gestation age, diagnosis on admission, associated medical and surgical comorbidity, reason for ICU admission, any surgical procedure performed, details of treatment given in ICU like ventilator support, blood transfusion, dialysis or ionotropic support. Patients outcome, review of mortality and area of improvement were also noted. Results: There were 17.5% mortalities observed in present study. The most common ICU intervention was blood transfusion (81.19%) followed by mechanical ventilation (37.8%). Commonest cause of mortality was multiorgan dysfunction (28.5%) followed by hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (14.3%), peripartum cardiomyopathy (14.3%), acute fatty liver of pregnancy (14.3%), septic shock (14.3%) and acute febrile illness (14.3%). Most of the patients were unbooked (74.3%), 47.2% cases did not receive antenatal care. Conclusions: There is need for antenatal registration of all pregnant women and institutional deliveries should be the aim. There should be antenatal detection and management of medical and surgical comorbidities. There is need for training in emergency obstetrics so that complication can be recognized and managed at an optimum time

    Get PDF
This study proposed a conceptual model and examined the nature of the relationship between transformational leadership (TFL), perceived organisational support (POS), employee engagement (EE), and organisational commitment (OC) among employees in the Indian IT sector. It then examined the mediating effect of EE on the relationship between TFL, POS, and OC. The partial least squares equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to validate the conceptual model. The findings revealed that TFL, POS and EE were significantly and positively related to OC. TFL had a greater significant effect on OC than POS. EE was found to partially mediate the relationship between TFL, POS, and OC. Control variables had a weak effect on EE and OC. However, Multigroup Analysis (MGA) revealed a significant difference in the EE of TFL between the lower and middle level managers. The findings confirm that direct policymakers and HR departments influence TFL and EE by adopting organisational interventions. Besides, its effect is also manifested in increasing the positive attitude and commitment towards the employees’ work.
