    Promoting Resilience Practice in Childen Using Improvisational Play

    This paper presents an expressive arts therapy method using interventions based in improvisational play to promote resilience-building in school-aged children. A review of current literature on resilience, developmental theory, creative psychotherapeutic interventions, and drama therapy interventions with this population is included. A method using a dramatic playspace to promote embodied interaction with interventions centered in active coping, cognitive flexibility, and social support was used in group therapy work with seven students (N = 7) enrolled in a therapeutic day school. Clinical observations support the effectiveness of embodied improvisational play therapy outlined in the literature review and suggest possible accessible avenues for long-term resilience work with children

    The emission line near 1319 A in solar and stellar spectra

    An emission line near 1319 A is one of the strongest unidentified lines in the ultraviolet spectra of cool dwarf stars. In most line lists it is identified as a transition in N I, although its intensity would then be anomalous and the observed wavelength does not fit precisely that expected for N I. The line is also observed in cool giant stars. The measured wavelength of the line in stellar spectra is 1318.94 (+,- 0.01) A. Observations of giant stars provide further evidence that this line is not due to N I. It is proposed that this line is a decay from a previously unknown level in S I, which lies above the first ionization limit. This is identified with the 3d singlet D (odd parity) term. The previous tentative assignment of this term to the S I line at 1309.3 A then needs to be revised. The 1309.3 A line has been identified here for the first time in an astrophysical source. The singlet D (odd parity) level could, in principle, be populated by collisions from nearby autoionizing levels that have large number-densities, through population by di-electronic capture. Spin-orbit interaction with the autoionizing triplet D (odd parity) term might also lead to di-electronic capture into the singlet D (odd parity) level. A line at 1309.87 A observed in cool giant stars is identified as a transition in P II, pumped by the O I resonance lines.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

    Seeking, Reading, and Use of Scholarly Articles: An International Study of Perceptions and Behavior of Researchers.

    While journal articles are still considered the most important sources of scholarly reading, libraries may no longer have a monopoly on providing discovery and access. Many other sources of scholarly information are available to readers. This international study examines how researchers discover, read, and use scholarly literature for their work. Respondents in 2018 report an average of almost 20 article readings a month and there are still significant differences found in the reading and use of scholarly literature by discipline and geographical location, consistent with the earlier studies. Researchers show they are willing to change or adopt new strategies to discover and obtain articles

    Transmedia Television: New Engagement Forms and Industry Practices

    The emergence of contemporary transmedia practices in network fictional television in the United States has worked to complicate our understanding of the television medium in the twenty-first century. As networks increasingly expand televisual content across new media technologies and various engagement platforms, this creates a series of organizational and creative changes both within the industry and daily experiences of televisions viewers. While transmedia research to date has tended to focus on defining the terminology and recounting early examples of transmedia experiments, this thesis shifts focus away from larger scale accounts of transmedia criticism to a more nuanced approach. To this end, transmedia television is situated within historical, contextual and methodological frameworks before moving on to a formal textual-based analysis of two case studies. These frameworks establish the research criteria and methodologies used to observe and evaluate the various tactics and strategies adopted in a successful TV website and second screen engagements that are the subject of the case studies. By engaging in a close analysis of these two examples of transmedia platforms, this thesis attempts to develop a fuller understanding of contemporary transmedia engagements in television, and contribute to establishing transmedia as an emerging medium in and of itself

    The Time Has Come… To Talk About Why Research Data Management Isn’t Easy

    For the last decade, academic libraries have talked with each other and with potential partners about their roles in helping to manage research data and their plans to expand or initiate research data services (RDS). Libraries have the capacity to provide these services, but the range and maturity of research data services from libraries vary considerably. In summer 2019, our team surveyed a sample of academic libraries of all sizes who are members of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) to find out about their current RDS and plans for the future. This study is a follow-up to surveys of this same group in 2012 and 2015. Our findings include the types of RDS currently being offered in academic libraries, the barriers that hinder RDS implementation, and staff capacity for creating RDS

    Results of pancreas transplantation after steroid withdrawal under tacrolimus immunosuppression

    Purpose. The results of steroid withdrawal in pancreas transplant recipients under tacrolimus immunosuppression were analyzed. Methods. From July 4, 1994 until April 30, 1998, 147 pancreas transplantations were performed in 141 patients, including 126 simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantations, 13 pancreas after kidney transplantation, and 8 pancreas transplantations alone. Baseline immunosuppression consisted of tacrolimus and steroids without antilymphocyte induction. Twenty-three patients were excluded from analysis because of early graft loss in 17 cases, retransplantation in 5 cases, and simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation after heart transplantation in 1 patient. Results. With a mean follow-up of 2.8±1.1 years (range 1.0 to 4.8 years), complete steroid withdrawal was achieved in 58 (47%) patients with a mean time to steroid withdrawal of 15.2±8 months (range 4 to 40 months after transplantation). Of the entire cohort of 141 patients, overall 1-, 2-, and 4-year patient survival rates were 98%, 95.5%, and 86%, respectively. Overall 1-, 2-, and 4- year graft survival rates were 83%, 80%, and 71% (pancreas) and 95%, 91%, and 84% (kidney), respectively. Of the 124 patients analyzed for steroid withdrawal, 1-, 2-, and 4-year patient survival rates were 98%, 97%, and 92%, respectively. Overall 1-, 2-, and 4-year graft survival rates were 98%, 91.5%, 83% (pancreas) and 97%, 95%, and 91% (kidney). Patient, pancreas, and kidney survival rates at 1 year were 100%, 100%, and 98% (off steroids) versus 97%, 91%, and 96% (on steroids, all NS) and at 4 years were 100%, 94%, and 95% (off steroids) versus 78%, 68%, and 85% (on steroids, P=0.01, 0.002, and NS, respectively). The cumulative risk of rejection at the time of follow-up was 76% for patients on steroids versus 74% for patients off steroids (P=NS). Seven patients originally tapered off steroids were treated for subsequent rejection episodes, which were all steroid sensitive, and two of these seven patients are currently off steroids. Thirteen patients received antilymphocyte therapy for steroid-resistant rejection, five of whom are now off steroids. Tacrolimus trough levels were 9.3±2.4 ng/ml (off steroids) and 9.7±4.3 (on steroids, P=NS). Mean fasting glucose levels were 98±34 mg/dl (off steroids) and 110±41 mg/dl (on steroids, P=NS). Mean glycosylated hemoglobin levels were 5.2±0.9% (off steroids) and 6.2±2.1% (on steroids, P=0.02), and mean serum creatinine levels were 1.4±0.8 mg/dl (off steroids) and 1.7±1.0 mg/dl (on steroids, P=0.02). Conclusion. These data show for the first time that steroid withdrawal can be safely accomplished in pancreas transplant recipients maintained on tacrolimus-based immunosuppression. Steroid withdrawal is associated with excellent patient and graft survival with no increase in the cumulative risk of rejection
