Effect of ambient temperature and humidity on emissions of an idling gas turbine
The effects of inlet pressure, temperature, and humidity on the oxides of nitrogen produced by an engine operating at takeoff power setting were investigated and numerous correction factors were formulated. The effect of ambient relative humidity on gas turbine idle emissions was ascertained. Experimentally, a nonvitiating combustor rig was employed to simulate changing combustor inlet conditions as generated by changing ambient conditions. Emissions measurements were made at the combustor exit. For carbon monoxide, a reaction kinetic scheme was applied within each zone of the combustor where initial species concentrations reflected not only local combustor characteristics but also changing ambient conditions
Self-organized Networks of Competing Boolean Agents
A model of Boolean agents competing in a market is presented where each agent
bases his action on information obtained from a small group of other agents.
The agents play a competitive game that rewards those in the minority. After a
long time interval, the poorest player's strategy is changed randomly, and the
process is repeated. Eventually the network evolves to a stationary but
intermittent state where random mutation of the worst strategy can change the
behavior of the entire network, often causing a switch in the dynamics between

Experimental approximation of the Jones polynomial with DQC1
We present experimental results approximating the Jones polynomial using 4
qubits in a liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information
processor. This is the first experimental implementation of a complete problem
for the deterministic quantum computation with one quantum bit model of quantum
computation, which uses a single qubit accompanied by a register of completely
random states. The Jones polynomial is a knot invariant that is important not
only to knot theory, but also to statistical mechanics and quantum field
theory. The implemented algorithm is a modification of the algorithm developed
by Shor and Jordan suitable for implementation in NMR. These experimental
results show that for the restricted case of knots whose braid representations
have four strands and exactly three crossings, identifying distinct knots is

Darwinian Selection and Non-existence of Nash Equilibria
We study selection acting on phenotype in a collection of agents playing
local games lacking Nash equilibria. After each cycle one of the agents losing
most games is replaced by a new agent with new random strategy and game
partner. The network generated can be considered critical in the sense that the
lifetimes of the agents is power law distributed. The longest surviving agents
are those with the lowest absolute score per time step. The emergent ecology is
characterized by a broad range of behaviors. Nevertheless, the agents tend to
be similar to their opponents in terms of performance.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Spacetime Embedding Diagrams for Black Holes
We show that the 1+1 dimensional reduction (i.e., the radial plane) of the
Kruskal black hole can be embedded in 2+1 Minkowski spacetime and discuss how
features of this spacetime can be seen from the embedding diagram. The purpose
of this work is educational: The associated embedding diagrams may be useful
for explaining aspects of black holes to students who are familiar with special

Adaptive walks on time-dependent fitness landscapes
The idea of adaptive walks on fitness landscapes as a means of studying
evolutionary processes on large time scales is extended to fitness landscapes
that are slowly changing over time. The influence of ruggedness and of the
amount of static fitness contributions are investigated for model landscapes
derived from Kauffman's landscapes. Depending on the amount of static
fitness contributions in the landscape, the evolutionary dynamics can be
divided into a percolating and a non-percolating phase. In the percolating
phase, the walker performs a random walk over the regions of the landscape with

A 20 Ghz Depolarization Experiment Using the ATS-6 Satellite
A depolarization experiment using the 20 GHz downlink from the ATS-6 satellite was described. The following subjects were covered: (1) an operational summary of the experiment, (2) a description of the equipment used with emphasis on improvements made to the signal processing receiver used with the ATS-5 satellite, (3) data on depolarization and attenuation in one snow storm and two rain storms at 45 deg elevation, (4) data on low angle propagation, (5) conclusions about depolarization on satellite paths, and (6) recommendations for the depolarization portion of the CTS experiment

Teleportation, Braid Group and Temperley--Lieb Algebra
We explore algebraic and topological structures underlying the quantum
teleportation phenomena by applying the braid group and Temperley--Lieb
algebra. We realize the braid teleportation configuration, teleportation
swapping and virtual braid representation in the standard description of the
teleportation. We devise diagrammatic rules for quantum circuits involving
maximally entangled states and apply them to three sorts of descriptions of the
teleportation: the transfer operator, quantum measurements and characteristic
equations, and further propose the Temperley--Lieb algebra under local unitary
transformations to be a mathematical structure underlying the teleportation. We
compare our diagrammatical approach with two known recipes to the quantum
information flow: the teleportation topology and strongly compact closed
category, in order to explain our diagrammatic rules to be a natural

A depolarization and attenuation experiment using the CTS satellite. Volume 1: Experiment description
An experiment for measuring precipitation attenuation and depolarization on the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) 11.7 GHz downlink is described. Attenuation and depolarization of the signal received from the spacecraft is monitored on a 24 hour basis. Data is correlated with ground weather conditions. Theoretical models for millimeter wave propagation through rain are refined for maximum agreement with observed data. Techniques are developed for predicting and mimimizing the effects of rain scatter and depolarization on future satellite communication systems
