Full-scale aerodynamic characteristics of a propellar installed on a small twin-engine aircraft wing panel
Full-scale measurements of shaft thrust and torque were made. Wind-tunnel speeds and blade angles were set for full-scale flight conditions. Excellent quality measurements were obtained of the thrust coefficient, the power coefficient, and the propeller efficiency for various values of the advance ratio and the blade incidence angle at 3/4-blade radius. A conventional propeller theory found in the literature was applied to the present results. Although thrust, power, and efficiency were somewhat overpredicted, the advance ratio for maximum efficiency was predicted quite accurately. It was found that, for some conditions, spinner drag could be significant. A simple correction that was based on the spinner base pressure substantially accounted for the changes in efficiency that resulted from this cause
Plasmarings as dual black rings
We construct solutions to the relativistic Navier-Stokes equations that
describe the long wavelength collective dynamics of the deconfined plasma phase
of N=4 Yang Mills theory compactified down to d=3 on a Scherk-Schwarz circle
and higher dimensional generalisations. Our solutions are stationary, axially
symmetric spinning balls and rings of plasma. These solutions, which are dual
to (yet to be constructed) rotating black holes and black rings in
Scherk-Schwarz compactified AdS(5) and AdS(6), and have properties that are
qualitatively similar to those of black holes and black rings in flat five

Implications of the Visible and X-Ray Counterparts to GRB970228
The gamma-ray burst source GRB970228 has been observed after a delay of 8--12
hours in X-rays and after one day in visible and near infrared light. This
marks the first detection of emission at lower frequencies following the
gamma-ray observation of a GRB and the first detection of any visible
counterpart to a GRB. We consider possible delayed visible and X-ray emission
mechanisms, and conclude that the intrinsic gamma-ray activity continued at a
much reduced intensity for at least a day. There are hints of such continued
activity in other GRB, and future observations can decide if this is true of
GRB in general. The observed multi-band spectrum of GRB970228 agrees with the
predictions of relativistic shock theory when the flux is integrated over a
time longer than that required for a radiating electron to lose its energy.Comment: 5 pp., tex, 1 figur
Towards the Standard Model spectrum from elliptic Calabi-Yau
We show that it is possible to construct supersymmetric three-generation
models of Standard Model gauge group in the framework of non-simply-connected
elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau, without section but with a bi-section. The
fibrations on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5)
and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, use a different
description of the elliptic fibre which leads to more than one global section.
We present two examples of a possible cover Calabi-Yau with a free involution:
one is a fibre product of rational elliptic surfaces ; another example is
an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface. There we give the necessary
amount of chiral matter by turning on in the bundles a further parameter,
related to singularities of the fibration and the branching of the spectral

Feminism, Abortion and Disability: irreconcilable differences?
There has been considerable discussion of the political allegiance between the feminist and disability movements, but the question of abortion remains a thorny one. Disability rights advocates have been keen to demonstrate that it is possible to believe in a woman's right to sovereignty over the body and, yet, be opposed to the selective abortion of an impaired foetus – describing the latter as a form of 'weak' eugenics.
The aim of this paper is to show that whilst there may be some points of agreement between the feminist and disability movements on the question of abortion, there exist fundamental and irreconcilable differences
Yet Another Model of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Sari and Piran have demonstrated that the time structure of gamma-ray bursts
must reflect the time structure of their energy release. A model which
satisfies this condition uses the electrodynamic emission of energy by the
magnetized rotating ring of dense matter left by neutron star coalescence; GRB
are essentially fast, high field, differentially rotating pulsars. The energy
densities are large enough that the power appears as an outflowing equilibrium
pair plasma, which produces the burst by baryon entrainment and subsequent
internal shocks. I estimate the magnetic field and characteristic time scale
for its rearrangement, which determines the observed time structure of the
burst. There may be quasi-periodic oscillations at the rotational frequencies,
which are predicted to range up to 5770 Hz (in a local frame). This model is
one of a general class of electrodynamic accretion models which includes the
Blandford and Lovelace model of AGN, and which can also be applied to black
hole X-ray sources of stellar mass. The apparent efficiency of nonthermal
particle acceleration is predicted to be 10--50%, but higher values are
possible if the underlying accretion flow is super-Eddington. Applications to
