    Quasi-Solitons in Dissipative Systems and Exactly Solvable Lattice Models

    A system of first-order differential-difference equations with time lag describes the formation of density waves, called as quasi-solitons for dissipative systems in this paper. For co-moving density waves, the system reduces to some exactly solvable lattice models. We construct a shock-wave solution as well as one-quasi-soliton solution, and argue that there are pseudo-conserved quantities which characterize the formation of the co-moving waves. The simplest non-trivial one is given to discuss the presence of a cascade phenomena in relaxation process toward the pattern formation.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 1 figur

    Solvable Optimal Velocity Models and Asymptotic Trajectory

    In the Optimal Velocity Model proposed as a new version of Car Following Model, it has been found that a congested flow is generated spontaneously from a homogeneous flow for a certain range of the traffic density. A well-established congested flow obtained in a numerical simulation shows a remarkable repetitive property such that the velocity of a vehicle evolves exactly in the same way as that of its preceding one except a time delay TT. This leads to a global pattern formation in time development of vehicles' motion, and gives rise to a closed trajectory on Δx\Delta x-vv (headway-velocity) plane connecting congested and free flow points. To obtain the closed trajectory analytically, we propose a new approach to the pattern formation, which makes it possible to reduce the coupled car following equations to a single difference-differential equation (Rondo equation). To demonstrate our approach, we employ a class of linear models which are exactly solvable. We also introduce the concept of ``asymptotic trajectory'' to determine TT and vBv_B (the backward velocity of the pattern), the global parameters associated with vehicles' collective motion in a congested flow, in terms of parameters such as the sensitivity aa, which appeared in the original coupled equations.Comment: 25 pages, 15 eps figures, LaTe

    Luteal lifespan and fertility after estrus synchronization in goats

    The present experiment aims to examine the efficiency of estrus synchronization using progesterone and equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) and to look at luteal function. During the non-breeding and breeding season, 5 adult female Korean native goats were injected intramuscularly with 2.5 ml of physiological saline as the control. A progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponge was then kept in the same goats for 10 days followed, after a week, by an intramuscular injection of 500 IU eCG. Five adult female Nubian goats were mated with a fertile buck during the non-breeding season. During the non-breeding season 2 of the 5 goats showed a normal estrous cycle (ranging from 18 to 21 days) and 3 a short estrous cycle (ranging from 3 to 6 days). During the breeding season the equivalent figures were 1 and 2. The major axes of the corpus luteum (CL) were measured by means of calipers built into the ultrasonography system, and the concentrations of plasma progesterone (P4) were determined by double antibody radioimmunoassay. The mean major axes of the CL in goats showing the short cycle (6.1 ± 0.5 mm) was significantly smaller than in those showing the normal cycle (8.9 ± 0.5 mm; p < 0.01) and also the value of P4 in goats showing the short cycle (4.2 ± 2.1 ng/ml) was significantly lower than for those showing the normal cycle (10.3 ± 4.3 ng/ml; p < 0.05) at day 3 following ovulation. Three out of 5 Nubian goats became pregnant but only one goat carried to full term. The present experiment indicated that a combination of progesterone and eCG was effective in inducing estrus, although it resulted in a high incidence of short luteal lifespan. The low kidding rate and high incidence of embryonic loss may be due to the instability of the luteal lifespan

    Spatial resolved high-energy particle diagnostic system using time-of-flight neutral particle analyzer in Large Helical Device

    The time-of-flight-type neutral particle analyzer has an ability of horizontal scanning from 40 to 100° of the pitch angle. The information from the spatially resolved energy spectrum gives not only the ion temperature but also the information of the particle confinement and the electric field in plasmas. We have been studying the energy distributions at various magnetic configurations in the neutral beam injection (NBI) plasma. The spatially resolved energy spectra can be observed during long discharges of the NBI plasma by continuous scanning of the neutral particle analyzer. The shape of spectra is almost similar from 44° to 53°. However, the spectra from 55° are strongly varied. They reflect the injection pitch angle of the beam. The pitch angle scanning experiment during the long discharge of NBI plasma has also been made under the reversal of the magnetic field direction. NBI2 becomes counter injected with the reversal. We can easily observe the difference between co- and counter injections of NBI. During the electron cyclotron heating in the low-density plasma for the formation of the internal thermal barrier, large neutral particle increase or decease can be observed. The degree of the increase/decrease depends on the energy and the density. The reason for the variation of the particle flux is that the orbit of the trapped particle changes due to the electric field formed by the strong electron cyclotron heating

    Genetic association between the interleukin-2 receptor-alpha gene and mode of onset of type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population.

    CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: The IL-2 receptor-alpha (IL2RA), also known as CD25, is expressed on the regulatory T cells, which play an important role in the control of immune responses and the maintenance of immune homeostasis. Our objective was to determine whether variants in the IL2RA gene are associated with type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population. DESIGN/PATIENTS: We genotyped the four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (rs706778, rs3118470, ss52580101, and rs11594656) of the IL2RA in 885 patients with type 1 diabetes and 606 control subjects of Japanese origin. The allele and genotype frequencies were examined in the patient groups stratified by their mode of onset in a case-control study. RESULTS: We found evidence of association with acute-onset, but not slow-onset and fulminant, type 1 diabetes for two of the four single-nucleotide polymorphisms genotyped (rs706778 and rs3118470). The rs706778 A allele and the rs3118470 G allele were associated with an increased disease risk [odds ratio (OR) for rs706778 AA genotype 1.54, P = 4.2 x 10(-4) and OR for rs3118470 GG genotype 1.50, P = 0.0019, respectively]. Furthermore, the A-G haplotype was associated with increased type 1 diabetes risk in the acute-onset form (OR 1.30, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The present data confirm the type 1 diabetes association with IL2RA and provide evidence that the different contributions of the IL2RA in the susceptibility to acute-onset and other forms of type 1 diabetes in the Japanese population
