    The Effect of News Article Quality on Ad Consumption

    Practical news feed platforms generate a hybrid list of news articles and advertising items (e.g., products, services, or information) and many platforms optimize the position of news articles and advertisements independently. However, they should be arranged with careful consideration of each other, as we show in this study, since user behaviors toward advertisements are significantly affected by the news articles. This paper investigates the effect of news articles on users' ad consumption and shows the dependency between news and ad effectiveness. We conducted a service log analysis and showed that sessions with high-quality news article exposure had more ad consumption than those with low-quality news article exposure. Based on this result, we hypothesized that exposure to high-quality articles will lead to a high ad consumption rate. Thus, we conducted million-scale A/B testing to investigate the effect of high-quality articles on ad consumption, in which we prioritized high-quality articles in the ranking for the treatment group. The A/B test showed that the treatment group's ad consumption, such as the number of clicks, conversions, and sales, increased significantly while the number of article clicks decreased. We also found that users who prefer a social or economic topic had more ad consumption by stratified analysis. These insights regarding news articles and advertisements will help optimize news and ad effectiveness in rankings considering their mutual influence.Comment: 30th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM2021

    Decomposition and Interleaving for Variance Reduction of Post-click Metrics

    In this study, we propose an efficient method for comparing the post-click metric (e.g., dwell time and conversion rate) of multiple rankings in online experiments. The proposed method involves (1) the decomposition of the post-click metric measurement of a ranking into a click model estimation and a post-click metric measurement of each item in the ranking, and (2) interleaving of multiple rankings to produce a single ranking that preferentially exposes items possessing a high population variance. The decomposition of the post-click metric measurement enables the free layout of items in a ranking and focuses on the measurement of the post-click metric of each item in the multiple rankings. The interleaving of multiple rankings reduces the sample variance of the items possessing a high population variance by optimizing a ranking to be presented to the users so that those items received more samples of the post-click metric. In addition, we provide a proof that the proposed method leads to the minimization of the evaluation error in the ranking comparison and propose two practical techniques to stabilize the online experiment. We performed a comprehensive simulation experiment and a real service setting experiment. The experimental results revealed that (1) the proposed method outperformed existing methods in terms of efficiency and accuracy, and the performance was especially remarkable when the input rankings shared many items, and (2) the two stabilization techniques successfully improved the evaluation accuracy and efficiency.Comment: The 7th ACM SIGIR International Conference on the Theory of Information Retrieval (ICTIR2021

    AbstractThe OmpR protein of Escherichia coli is a positive regulator involved in activation of the ompF and ompC genes which encode the major outer membrane proteins OmpF and OmpC, respectively. By employing recombinant DNA techniques, we isolated the N- and C-terminal halves of the OmpR molecule. From the results of biochemical analyses of these fragments, it was concluded that the N-terminal portion contains a site involved in phosphorylation by an OmpR-specific protein kinase EnvZ, whereas the C-terminal part possesses a DNA-binding site for the ompC and ompF promoters

    EPR study of NO radicals encased in modified open C60 fullerenes

    Using pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques, the low-temperature magnetic properties of the NO radical being confined in two different modified open C60-derived cages are determined. It is found that the smallest principal g value g3, being assigned to the axis of the radical, deviates strongly from the free electron value. This behaviour results from partial compensation of the spin and orbital contributions to the g3 value. The measured g3 values in the range of 0.7 yield information about the deviation of the locking potential for the encaged NO from axial symmetry. The estimated 17 meV asymmetry is quite small compared to the situation found for the same radical in polycrystalline or amorphous matrices ranging from 300 to 500 meV. The analysis of the temperature dependence of spin relaxation times resulted in an activation temperature of about 3 K, assigned to temperature-activated motion of the NO within the modified open C60-derived cages with coupled rotational and translational degrees of freedom in a complicated three-dimensional locking potential

    Associations between Comorbidities and Acute Exacerbation of Interstitial Lung Disease after Primary Lung Cancer Surgery

    Acute exacerbation (AE) of interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a severe complication of lung resection in lung cancer patients with ILD (LC-ILD). This study aimed to assess the predictive value of comorbidities other than ILD for postoperative AE in patients with LC-ILD. We retrospectively evaluated 68 patients with LC-ILD who had undergone lung resection. We classified them into two groups: those who had developed postoperative AE within 30 days after resection and those who had not. We analyzed patient characteristics, high-resolution computed tomography findings, clinical data, pulmonary function, and intraoperative data. The incidence of postoperative AEs was 11.8%. In univariate analysis, performance status (PS), honeycombing, forced vital capacity (FVC), and high hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels without comorbidities were significantly associated with postoperative AE. Patients were divided into two groups according to cutoff levels of those four variables as determined by receiver operating characteristic curves, revealing that the rates of patients without postoperative AE differed significantly between groups. The present results suggested that preoperative comorbidities other than ILD were not risk factors for postoperative AE in patients with LC-ILD. However, a high preoperative HbA1c level, poor PS, low FVC, and honeycombing may be associated with postoperative AE of LC-ILD

    Homeostatic Mass Control in Gastric Non-Neoplastic Epithelia under Infection of Helicobacter pylori: An Immunohistochemical Analysis of Cell Growth, Stem Cells and Programmed Cell Death

    We evaluated homeostatic mass control in non-neoplastic gastric epithelia under Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in the macroscopically normal-appearing mucosa resected from the stomach with gastric cancer, immunohistochemically analyzing the proliferation, kinetics of stem cells and programmed cell death occurring in them. Ki67 antigen-positive proliferating cells were found dominantly in the elongated neck portion, sparsely in the fundic areas and sporadically in the stroma with chronic infiltrates. CD117 could monitor the kinetics of gastric stem cells and showed its expression in two stages of gastric epithelial differentiation, namely, in transient cells from the gastric epithelial stem cells to the foveolar and glandular cells in the neck portion and in what are apparently progenitor cells from the gastric stem cells in the stroma among the infiltrates. Most of the nuclei were positive for ssDNA in the almost normal mucosa, suggesting DNA damage. Cleaved caspase-3-positive foveolar cells were noted under the surface, suggesting the suppression of apoptosis in the surface foveolar cells. Besides such apoptosis of the foveolar cells, in the severely inflamed mucosa apoptotic cells were found in the neck portion where most of the cells were Ki67 antigen-positive proliferating cells. Beclin-1 was recognized in the cytoplasm and in a few nuclei of the fundic glandular cells, suggesting their autophagic cell death and mutated beclin-1 in the nuclei. Taken together, the direct and indirect effects of HP infection on the gastric epithelial proliferation, differentiation and programmed cell death suggested the in-situ occurrence of gastric cancer under HP infection

    Normalization of Pulmonary Hypertension by the Use of Left Ventricular Assist Device in Patients with End-stage Heart Failure: A Possible Contribution to Donor Pool Expansion in Lung Transplantation

    SummaryHeart transplantation alone has been recognized to be contraindicated when pulmonary hypertension (PH) and elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) are irreversible, irrespective of any medical intervention by the use of inotropic agents or pulmonary vasodilators, because such patients are at an increased risk of post-transplantation right ventricular failure and mortality. Therefore, end-stage heart failure patients with concomitant fixed PH and irreversibly high PVR are considered to be heart–lung transplant candidates. Recently, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy has been reported to normalize PVR through persistent unloading of the left ventricle, even in patients with medically refractory PH. Therefore, LVAD therapy could make such patients suitable for “heart-only” transplants, which contributes to appropriate donor lung allocation for lung-only candidates. We review the literature regarding LVAD use for secondary PH and present a case with end-stage heart failure that could avoid a heart–lung transplant owing to LVAD therapy

    Structure of a tetrameric photosystem I from a glaucophyte alga Cyanophora paradoxa

    Photosystem I (PSI) is one of the two photosystems functioning in light-energy harvesting, transfer, and electron transfer in photosynthesis. However, the oligomerization state of PSI is variable among photosynthetic organisms. We present a 3.8-angstrom resolution cryo-electron microscopic structure of tetrameric PSI isolated from the glaucophyte alga Cyanophora paradoxa, which reveals differences with PSI from other organisms in subunit composition and organization. The PSI tetramer is organized in a dimer of dimers with a C2 symmetry. Unlike cyanobacterial PSI tetramers, two of the four monomers are rotated around 90 degrees, resulting in a completely different pattern of monomer-monomer interactions. Excitation-energy transfer among chlorophylls differs significantly between Cyanophora and cyanobacterial PSI tetramers. These structural and spectroscopic features reveal characteristic interactions and excitation-energy transfer in the Cyanophora PSI tetramer, suggesting that the Cyanophora PSI could represent a turning point in the evolution of PSI from prokaryotes to eukaryotes
