A Modeling of the Super-Eddington Luminosity in Nova Outbursts: V1974 Cygni
We have modeled nova light curves exceeding the Eddington luminosity. It has
been suggested that a porous structure develops in nova envelopes during the
super Eddington phase and the effective opacity is much reduced for such a
porous atmosphere. Based on this reduced opacity model, we have calculated
envelope structures and light curves of novae. The optically thick wind model
is used to simulate nova winds. We find that the photospheric luminosity and
the wind mass-loss rate increase inversely proportional to the reducing factor
of opacities, but the wind velocity hardly changes. We also reproduce the
optical light curve of V1974 Cygni (Nova Cygni 1992) in the super-Eddington
phase, which lasts 13 days from the optical peak 1.7 mag above the Eddington

Ramification theory for varieties over a local field
We define generalizations of classical invariants of wild ramification for
coverings on a variety of arbitrary dimension over a local field. For an l-adic
sheaf, we define its Swan class as a 0-cycle class supported on the wild
ramification locus. We prove a formula of Riemann-Roch type for the Swan
conductor of cohomology together with its relative version, assuming that the
local field is of mixed characteristic.
We also prove the integrality of the Swan class for curves over a local field
as a generalization of the Hasse-Arf theorem. We derive a proof of a conjecture
of Serre on the Artin character for a group action with an isolated fixed point

Clustering of Conditional Mutual Information for Quantum Gibbs States above a Threshold Temperature
We prove that the quantum Gibbs states of spin systems above a certain threshold temperature are approximate quantum Markov networks, meaning that the conditional mutual information decays rapidly with distance. We demonstrate the exponential decay for short-ranged interacting systems and power-law decay for long-ranged interacting systems. Consequently, we establish the efficiency of quantum Gibbs sampling algorithms, a strong version of the area law, the quasilocality of effective Hamiltonians on subsystems, a clustering theorem for mutual information, and a polynomial-time algorithm for classical Gibbs state simulations
Impacts of the Hutan Kamasyarakatan (HKm) Social Forestry Program in the Sumberjaya Watershed, West Lampung District of Sumatra
This paper assesses the economic impacts of the Hutan Kamasyarakatan (HKm) social forestry program in the Sumberjaya watershed in West Lampung District of Sumatra, Indonesia, which began in 2001 to provide farmer groups permits to use already deforested state Protection Forest (PF) land in exchange for protecting remaining forests, planting timber and agro-forestry trees in their coffee plantations, and using soil and water conservation measures. The study is based on analysis of a survey conducted in 2005 for 640 plots in the watershed, selected using a stratified random sample of land of different tenure categories, and their operator households, and surveys of communities with PF land and HKm groups in the watershed. We find that HKm permit holders are poorer on average than owners of private land, but have comparable wealth to users of other eligible PF land who have not applied or received HKm permits, and users of National Park (NP) land, which is not eligible for HKm. Compared to eligible non-participants, households with a HKm permit by 2005 have greater education, are more involved in producer organizations, and have better access to markets, roads and technical assistance. Many communities and households are not aware of the program or its requirements, including some of those in HKm groups. Program participants and applicants perceive that it substantially increases tenure security, land values, land investments and incomes. Econometric analysis and propensity score matching methods using the survey data provide only limited support for these perceptions, showing that the program had statistically insignificant impacts on land purchase values, soil and water conservation investments, soil fertility management practices, and profits. The program did significantly increase planting of timber and multi-purpose agroforestry trees, but these have offsetting impacts on profits, with multi-purpose trees contributing to higher profits and timber trees causing lower profits because timber harvesting is not allowed. These findings indicate that the program has potentially important pro-poor benefits, though realization of these benefits is limited by potential beneficiaries lack of access to necessary human and social capital, markets and technical assistance; lack of awareness about the program; and program restrictions that require planting of timber trees but prohibit timber harvesting.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
Effective Hamiltonians for atoms in very strong magnetic fields
We propose three effective Hamiltonians which approximate atoms in very
strong homogeneous magnetic fields modelled by the Pauli Hamiltonian, with
fixed total angular momentum with respect to magnetic field axis. All three
Hamiltonians describe electrons and a fixed nucleus where the Coulomb
interaction has been replaced by -dependent one-dimensional effective
(vector valued) potentials but without magnetic field. Two of them are solvable
in at least the one electron case. We briefly sketch how these Hamiltonians can
be used to analyse the bottom of the spectrum of such atoms.Comment: 43 page
Relativistic Diskoseismology. I. Analytical Results for 'Gravity Modes'
We generalize previous calculations to a fully relativistic treatment of
adiabatic oscillations which are trapped in the inner regions of accretion
disks by non-Newtonian gravitational effects of a black hole. We employ the
Kerr geometry within the scalar potential formalism of Ipser and Lindblom,
neglecting the gravitational field of the disk. This approach treats
perturbations of arbitrary stationary, axisymmetric, perfect fluid models. It
is applied here to thin accretion disks. Approximate analytic eigenfunctions
and eigenfrequencies are obtained for the most robust and observable class of
modes, which corresponds roughly to the gravity (internal) oscillations of
stars. The dependence of the oscillation frequencies on the mass and angular
momentum of the black hole is exhibited. These trapped modes do not exist in
Newtonian gravity, and thus provide a signature and probe of the strong-field
structure of black holes. Our predictions are relevant to observations which
could detect modulation of the X-ray luminosity from stellar mass black holes
in our galaxy and the UV and optical luminosity from supermassive black holes

In-the-Gap SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova, Var73 Dra with a Supercycle of about 60 Days
An intensive photometric-observation campaign of the recently discovered SU
UMa-type dwarf nova, Var73 Dra was conducted from 2002 August to 2003 February.
We caught three superoutbursts in 2002 October, December and 2003 February. The
recurrence cycle of the superoutburst (supercycle) is indicated to be 60
d, the shortest among the values known so far in SU UMa stars and close to
those of ER UMa stars. The superhump periods measured during the first two
superoutbursts were 0.104885(93) d, and 0.10623(16) d, respectively. A
0.10424(3)-d periodicity was detected in quiescence. The change rate of the
superhump period during the second superoutburst was , which
is an order of magnitude larger than the largest value ever known. Outburst
activity has changed from a phase of frequent normal outbursts and infrequent
superoutbursts in 2001 to a phase of infrequent normal outbursts and frequent
superoutbursts in 2002. Our observations are negative to an idea that this star
is an related object to ER UMa stars in terms of the duty cycle of the
superoutburst and the recurrence cycle of the normal outburst. However, to
trace the superhump evolution throughout a superoutburst, and from quiescence

Photometric Studies of a WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Nova Candidate, ASAS160048-4846.2
We report on our time-resolved CCD photometry during the 2005 June
superoutburst of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova candidate, ASAS 160048-4846.2. The
ordinary superhumps underwent a complex evolution during the superoutburst. The
superhump amplitude experienced a regrowth, and had two peaks. The superhump
period decreased when the superhump amplitude reached to the first maximum,
successively gradually increased until the second maximum of the amplitude, and
finally decreased again. Investigating other SU UMa-type dwarf novae which show
an increase of the superhump period, we found the same trend of the superhump
evolution in superoutbursts of them. We speculate that the superhump regrowth
in the amplitude has a close relation to the increase of the superhump period,
and all of SU UMa-type dwarf novae with a superhump regrowth follow the same
evolution of the ordinary superhumps as that of ASAS 160048-4846.2.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
