    Linearization and Coordination in German

    Get PDF
This paper attempts a novel approach to certain coordination constructions in German and other Germanic languages. It will be shown that virtually all previous attempts at describing such constructions involve asymmetric conjuncts, in violation of the general like category constraint on coordination. While independent evidence for the kinds of mechanisms that license such asymmetry is weak, these analyses in addition are incapable of reflecting the close relationship of the constructions in question with another type of coordination. Since the reason for the asymmetry is essentially the insistence on phrase structure as the sole means of describing syntactic structure (i.e. by relating structure and surface representation in terms of the terminal yield of a tree), we will develop an alternative analysis that is empirically adequate and respects the like category constraint necessitating a different relation between structure and surface string which we will call "Linearization"

The Power of Christ Compelled Her: The Intersectional Identities and Cultural Logic of Bishop Alma B. White

    Get PDF
In a culture inhospitable to women preachers, Alma Bridwell White not only became a successful preacher, but went on to become the first female bishop in the U.S. The leader of her own religious organization, the Pillar of Fire, she simultaneously offered her proud support to the early feminist movement and the KKK. Alma White is an example of an oppressed oppressor who rhetorically maneuvers the tensions that arise amongst her various and seemingly contradictory identities. Her autobiographical work, The Story of My Life and the Pillar of Fire represents a concerted effort to not only construct a culturally palatable religious identity as divinely endorsed fundamentalist, white supremacist, feminist Christian, but to use that divinity in the service of inspiring transformation of the holy spirit and steadfast devotion in followers of her organization, the Pillar of Fire. In this project, I argue that White uses a religious pattern of thought in pursuit of her goals - demonize, forebode, self deify

    The Persuasive Force of Demanding

    Get PDF
Demanding is a fundamental rhetorical strategy for marginalized groups, but recent rhetorical theories of demanding have not explained how speakers can design demands to influence addressees to accede. Psychoanalytic and decolonial theories have identified constitutive functions, but have not explained how speakers can design demands that pressure addressees to accede. Speech act theories have explained specific kinds of demands but have not synthesized insights into a model of demanding generally. We draw on normative pragmatic theory to argue that speakers design demands that generate persuasive force by openly making visible their intent to influence addressees to accede and bringing to bear a reciprocal obligation for themselves and addressees to live up to the norm of “right makes might.

Protocol to develop a synthetic biology toolkit for the non-model bacterium \u3ci\u3eR. palustris\u3c/i\u3e

Numerous biology tools are developed to work for model organisms, which, however, do not work effectively in non-model organisms. Here, we present a protocol for developing a synthetic biology toolkit for Rhodopseudomonas palustris CGA009, a non-model bacterium with unique metabolic properties. We describe steps for introducing and characterizing biological devices in nonmodel bacteria, such as the utilization of fluorescence markers and RT-qPCR. This protocol may also be applicable for other non-model organisms. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Immethun et al..
