The Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites as a Mechanism for Further European Union Foreign Policy Integration: An Analysis of Language and Objectives

Culture and cultural heritage have long been ignored or pushed into the background when it comes to being considered in foreign and security policy decisions by major world players, including the European Union. However, as the EU’s desired Common Foreign and Security Policy continues to face large hurdles due to indifference and even repulsion towards continued integration and a larger focus on national sovereignty, the governing bodies of the EU have sought new ways to further integration in this field without relying on solely military action or policy. One such way they have found to do this has been through the protection of cultural heritage and, as such, greater support for UNESCO initiatives and programs. Since 2012, global unrest has only grown, especially in the Middle East and North Africa. As a result, more and more cultural heritage sites are being threatened or destroyed by armed conflict. This paper demonstrates through an analysis of changing language, and thus changing objectives, within official EU statements, speeches, and documents, the EU’s changing view about the usefulness of cultural heritage in creating a common foreign and security policy. The underlying belief of this is the thought that by investing in the protection of cultural heritage sites through UNESCO, the EU helps to stabilize tumultuous regions by rebuilding a sense of identity and solidarity. Thus, culture must be brought to the forefront of foreign and security policy for the EU and is a way to continue to grow European integration in this area

What Moral Obligations do Healthcare Providers Have to Offer Language Services?

This paper analyzes the need for language services in the healthcare system. While U.S. law requires the provision of medical services, patients and families often do not receive the services they need. Even patients and family members with strong English language abilities may struggle with medical language or in an emotionally charged context. This paper uses a feminist analysis, drawing on Social Contract Theory and Kantian ethics, to argue for the ethical responsibility of healthcare providers to offer adequate interpretive services

Effects of writing language objectives on the language proficiency of English Language Learners

Teachers of English Language Learners are faced with the challenge of developing their students’ second language. This study investigates the impact of integrating language instruction during mathematics instruction. The research question asks: What are the effects of using writing language objectives on language proficiency of English Language Learners? The intervention was implemented in a fourth grade dual language classroom comprised of 24 native Spanish speakers of varying English language proficiency levels. During the intervention the researcher modeled writing language objectives, provided more opportunities to write during math lessons, assessed the language objectives, and provided students with written corrective feedback on their writing. The writing samples of five students were analyzed through quantitative rubric data, error analysis, and qualitative trends. The results indicated that integrating language instruction in the content areas, using writing language objectives and a system of written corrective feedback can aid English Language Learners in their second language writing development

Field Excavations at Sylvester Manor

This chapter describes the overall field strategy and summarizes nine seasons of field excavations at Sylvester Manor. All tested site areas are described, with greatest detail given to the areas relevant to the research questions on the early plantation period, as well as the pre-Contact/Colonial Native American occupation areas. This overview of the excavations also provides a broad interpretation of the results relating to the early colonial landscape, associations between site areas, and the longer term Native American occupation of the site

The Half Life of Environmental Racism: Reproductive Justice and Nuclear Technology on Indigenous Lands

Nuclear waste on indigenous lands is a reproductive justice issue. Indigenous communities experience high rates of miscarriage and reproductive cancers, which remove bodily autonomy and reproductive choice. Negative health outcomes make communities unsafe places to raise children, and the potential for increased exposure to toxins through traditional cultural practices impacts a community’s ability to raise children with those cultural practices. This paper draws on bioethical theory, secondary historical and sociological analysis, and primary source accounts. This paper argues, through a series of historical case studies, that these impacts of nuclear waste are the result of systemic racism against indigenous communities and need to be taken into consideration as energy and waste storage policies are developed to address climate change. Additionally, this paper examines current climate change discourse in this context

Mathematical specification of hitomezashi designs

Two mathematical aspects of the centuries-old Japanese sashiko stitching form hitomezashi are discussed: the encoding of designs using words from a binary alphabet, and duality. Traditional hitomezashi designs are analysed using these two ideas. Self-dual hitomezashi designs related to Fibonacci snowflakes, which we term Pell persimmon polyomino patterns, are proposed. Both these designs and the binary words used to generate them appear to be new to their respective literatures.Comment: 25 pages; 21 figure
