Quality TV and Social Distinction: An Experiment on How Complex Television Series Valorize Their Users

This paper addresses the question as to whether serial quality TV has the potential to valorize its fans. We draw on Bourdieu’s theory of distinction, assuming that demonstrated preference for a specific cultural taste has consequences for the attribution of capital endowment overall, and especially within an adept group. These assumptions are tested via a 3 (preference for high-culture vs. conventional television vs. quality TV series) x 1 online experiment with between subject design plus control group (N = 389). Results showed that conspicuously favouring serial quality TV has the potential to function as a distinctive sign – at least to some extent. Significantly more cultural capital is ascribed to a quality TV fan than to a person showing a preference for conventional television. Within a certain group of connoisseurs, a quality TV taste is even worth as much as a preference for high-culture. Implications are discussed with regard to the theory of distinction and quality TV series as the object of investigation

Geteilte Aufmerksamkeit und Erinnerungsleistung. Ein Experiment zur Verarbeitung von Audioinhalten in Multitasking-Situationen

Radio gilt als Begleitmedium. Selbst Inhalten wortlastiger Sendungen, Podcasts oder Hörbüchern wird selten die alleinige Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Stattdessen findet ein Großteil der Nutzung parallel zu anderen Tätigkeiten statt, etwa beim Autofahren oder dem Surfen im Internet. Die vorliegende Studie geht unter Anwendung des Limited Capacity-Modells von Lang (2000, 2006) der Frage nach, welche Auswirkungen Paralleltätigkeiten unterschiedlicher Anforderungsniveaus auf die Verarbeitungskapazität beim Hören von Audioinhalten haben. In einer experimentellen Onlinestudie (N = 309) wurde gezeigt, dass den drei Verarbeitungs-Subprozessen Enkodierung, Speicherung und Abruf bei anspruchsvollen Tätigkeiten weniger Ressourcen zur Verfügung stehen. Eine einfache Paralleltätigkeit führte dagegen weder bei der Enkodierung noch beim Abruf zu Interferenzeffekten. Lediglich die Speicherung wurde beeinträchtigt. Geringes Vorwissen sorgte zudem für eine Verstärkung der Interferenzeffekte. Textlastige Audioinhalte wie Podcasts oder Radio-Nachrichten können demnach nur mit Einschränkungen gehaltvoll nebenbei rezipiert werden

A Just and Happy Ending?

Cognitive responses to crime drama received little attention in communication research compared to affective responses. This study builds on the integrated model of enjoyment for crime drama and examines the role of viewer’s ‘judgment of justice’ – the viewer’s moral judgment of the fairness and propriety of the punishment received for a crime committed – for enjoyment. Furthermore, we theoretically discuss the role of the ‘judgment of others’ as trigger for reflective moral reasoning and the stability of the viewer’s moral judgment. We conducted a lab experiment with N=148 students watching an interactive movie and an online follow-up survey after one week. Results confirm that viewer’s enjoyment is a function of the viewer’s judgment of justice. Furthermore, the judgment of others served as a moral compass for the individual viewer as they adjusted their moral judgment if it was not in line with others’ judgment
