Westward Bound is a detailed study of sex and violence in Canada\u27s prairie provinces and British Columbia-the circumstances and causes of that violence, its policing and prosecution, and the role of both in the shaping of class, race, and gender relations during the settlement era. Lesley Erickson\u27s study can be read profitably along with studies of the us. West, such as David Peterson del Mar\u27s Beaten Down: A History of Interpersonal Violence in the West (2002). Erickson makes few comparisons to the US., framing her analysis instead mostly in relation to historiography on other parts of Canada and Britain. But her book provides valuable material for historians of the Great Plains and the larger American West

Compact mass flow meter based on a micro Coriolis flow sensor

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a compact ready-to-use micro Coriolis mass flow meter. The full scale flow is 2 g/h (for water at a pressure drop of 2 bar). It has a zero stability of 2 mg/h and an accuracy of 0.5% reading. The temperature drift between 10 and 50 ºC is below 1 mg/h/ºC. The meter is robust, has standard fluidic connections and can be read out by a PC or laptop via USB. Its performance was tested for several common gases (helium, nitrogen, argon and air) and liquids (water and IPA)

In this paper we demonstrate a compact ready-to-use micro Coriolis mass flow meter. The full scale flow is 1 g/h (for water at a pressure drop < 1 bar). It has a zero stability of 2 mg/h and an accuracy of 0.5% reading for both liquids and gases. The temperature drift between 10 and 50 °C is below 1 mg/h/°C. The meter is robust, has standard fluidic connections and can be read out by means of a PC or laptop via USB. Its performance was tested for several common gases (hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, argon and air) and liquids (water and isopropanol). As in all Coriolis mass flow meters, the meter is also able to measure the actual density of the medium flowing through the tube. The sensitivity of the measured density is ~1 Hz.m3/kg

Background Among the most frequently encountered mutations in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are those in the lamin A/C (LMNA) gene. Our goal was to analyze the LMNA gene in patients with DCM and/or conduction disease referred to the cardiogenetics outpatient clinic and to evaluate the prevalence of LMNA mutations and their clinical expression. Methods and Results The LMNA gene was screened in 61 index patients. Eleven mutations (including 6 novel) were identified, mainly in the subgroup of familial DCM with cardiac conduction disease (3/10 index patients) and in patients with DCM and Emery-Dreifuss, Limb-Girdle, or unclassified forms of muscular dystrophy (7/8 index patients). In addition, a mutation was identified in 1 of 4 families with only cardiac conduction disease. We did not identify any large deletions or duplications.Genotype-phenotype relationships revealed a high rate of sudden death and cardiac transplants in carriers of the p.N 195K mutation. Our study confirmed that the p.R225X mutation leads to cardiac conduction disease with late or no development of DCM, underscoring the importance of this mutation in putative familial "lone conduction disease." Nearly one third of LMNA mutation carriers had experienced a thromboembolic event. Conclusions This study highlights the role of LMNA mutations in DCM and related disorders. A severe phenotype in p.N 195K mutation carriers and preferential cardiac conduction disease in p.R225X carriers was encountered. Because of the clinical variability, including the development of associated symptoms in time, LMNA screening should be considered in patients with DCM or familial lone conduction diseas
