Changes of Circulatory and Nervous Diseases Mortality Patterns during Periods of Exceptional Solar Events

    No full text
A statistical analysis of the relation between exceptional solar events and daily numbers of deaths in the Czech Republic is presented. In particular, we concentrate on diseases of the nervous system (group VI from ICD-10—International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision) and diseases of the circulatory system (group IX from ICD-10). We demonstrate that the neurological diseases exhibit greater instability during the period of rising and falling solar activity. We study the daily numbers of deaths, separately for both sexes and two age groups (under 39 and 40+), during the Solar Cycles No. 23 and No. 24. We focus on exceptionally strong solar events in this period, such as the “Bastille Day event” on 14 July 2000, “Halloween solar storm” on 28 October 2003, and events on 7 January 1997, 2 April 2000, and on 7 September 2005. Special attention is paid to “St. Patrick’s Day storm” on 17 March 2015, the strongest geomagnetic storm of the Solar Cycle No. 24 that occurred following a coronal mass ejection (CME). We investigate the changes in the daily numbers of deaths during 1 month before and 1 month after these exceptional solar events. We take specific storm dynamics of their geophysical parameters into consideration. It has been verified that, for diseases of the nervous system, women are generally more sensitive than men. On the contrary, this differences between men and women have not been found for diseases of the circulatory system. Our findings suggest that the impact of the hazardous space weather conditions on human health depends on the specific dynamic and strength of the solar storm

Impact of changes in Earth thermal plasma parameters and solar indices on mortality by cause in the Czech Republic

    Get PDF
The aim of this diploma thesis was to study the dependence of the intensity of mortality in the Czech Republic, according to the chosen causes of death, on the Solar activity during the increasing and decreasing phase of the Solar cycle in the period 1994-2011, using the methods of the multivariate statistical analysis. The Solar activity was represented by the indices R, Kp, F10.7 and Dst, and also by the height of the F2 layer and TEC for the Czech Republic. The typology of time profiles for causes of death was identified with the help of cluster analysis using time. The dependence between the analyzed time series was investigated using the multivariate statistical analysis. The correlation of the intensity of mortality from coronary heart disease, from stroke, Edwards' and Pataus' syndrom with the Solar activity parameters was discovered, as well as a stronger dependence on the ionosphere parametres related to the Czech Republic area

The wider context of the impact of solar activity on mortality by cause in the Czech Republic

The wider context of the impact of solar activity on mortality by cause in the Czech Republic Abstract The presented dissertation investigates the influence of extraterestrial phenomena, in the whole scope of their possible effects, on human population. It analyses the influence of climate-change induced fluctuation of solar activity on the population, as well as the impact of the concentration of cosmogenic radionuclides on human health. In the introduction, the manifestation of solar activity on Earth is described, the results of the present research is summarized, and the used methods of data processing and the data sources are described. The primary focus of this work is the association of mortality from the causes of death recorded under chapter IV. Diseases of the nervous system and chapter IX. Diseases of the circulatory system of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) in the Czech Republic with the changes in the level of solar activity and its exceptional fluctuations. The main aim is to determine the possible link between the daily numbers of dead by the respective causes of death, by sex and age groups in the Czech Republic, on global as well as on geographically specific daily values of solar, ionospheric, and geomagnetic parameters in the years 1994-2013. These are..

Circulatory and Nervous Diseases Mortality Patterns—Comparison of Geomagnetic Storms and Quiet Periods

The aim of this paper is to statistically examine whether there are different patterns in daily numbers of deaths during the quiet periods of solar activity, in contrast to the periods of the strong solar storms. We considered three periods of solar storms (storm of 14 July 2000 Bastille Day Event, storm of 28 October 2003 Halloween Solar Storms, and storm of 17 March 2015 St. Patrick’s Day event) and three periods of continuous very low solar activity (13 September–24 October 1996, 21 July–20 August 2008, and 31 July–31 August 2009) during the Solar Cycles No. 23 and No. 24. In particular, we focus on diseases of the nervous system (group VI from ICD-10) and diseases of the circulatory system (group IX from ICD-10) separately for both sexes and two age groups (under 39 and 40+). We demonstrate that in the resulting graphical models there was a connection between the daily number of deaths and all indices of solar and geomagnetic activity in periods of low solar activity in contrast to periods of strong solar storms in some monitored groups according to age, sex, and group of diagnosis

The impact of cosmic-origin background radiation on human survival in the Czech Republic

We evaluate the lifetime attributable risks induced by an increasing concentration of cosmic radiation and cosmogenic radionuclides during periods of low solar activity for the specific conditions in the Czech Republic. The concentration of cosmic radiation and cosmogenic radionuclides reaches its highest values during the solar minima when the Earth’s magnetosphere is more penetrable. The computed estimate of lifetime attributable risks from solid neoplasms (colon, lung, and stomach) induced by doses of natural background radiation is higher for the period of low activity in solar cycle No. 24 than for the forced solar activity in the previous solar cycle Nos. 19-23. We estimated the lifetime attributable risks induced by the annual dose of natural background radiation by sex for the Czech Republic and the USA. In addition, three different scenarios based on dose radiation level were explored. The cosmogenic radionuclides in our environment may thus play a greater role than in the last decades.13214
