The grip dispute (kumi-kata ) in judo: A scoping review

    Get PDF
In judo combat, the grip (kumi-kata) helps to control and to dominate the opponent, and per the current rules is a prerequisite to executing a throwing technique. In this scoping review, articles and reviews published in scientific journals in English were searched in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and SPORTDiscus databases from inception until December 2020. The studies were classified into technical-tactical or time-motion analyses, grip or grip attempts, grip locations on uke´s (athlete receiving the attack) judogi (judo uniform) or hands that performed the grips, and one or two hands holding. Articles evaluating the physical and physiological capacities of grip dispute were excluded. From 286 articles identified, 41 were included in the final selection. Two reviewers screened the records independently for eligibility. One reviewer extracted all data and the other reviewed the data for accuracy. The main results showed that: i) more experienced athletes hold the judogi for less time before attacking and focus their vision on the face and collar; ii) male athletes, especially heavy ones, hold longer in the judogi and use more defensive grips (collar and collar); iii) the most used grip was collar and sleeve; iv) the most used position was kenka-yotsu (opposite sides). The result of this scoping review may assist coaches and athletes to develop training strategies according to the athletes’ technical-tactical objectives, as well as future investigations that can be conducted related to grip dispute in judo

Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) is one of the side effects associated with glucocorticoid (GC) therapy. In 2014, the Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research (JSBMR) provided new guidelines for the management and treatment of GIOP. The aim of the present study was to clarify the prevalence of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) requiring treatment according to the new guidelines and to identify risk factors associated with lack of treatment in these patients. Patients in the 2018 Akita Orthopedic group on Rheumatoid Arthritis (AORA) database were enrolled. Of 2,234 patients with RA in the database, 683 (30.6%) met the 2014 JSBMR guideline treatment criteria, and 480 (70.3%) had been treated. The untreated group included a larger number of males, younger patients, and patients treated in clinics rather than hospital (p<0.001, p=0.015, and p<0.001, respectively). Multivariate analyses found that male sex, younger age, and clinic-based RA care were significant risk factors associated with lack of treatment (p<0.001, p=0.013, and p<0.001, respectively). Thus, male sex, younger age, and clinic-based care were identified as risk factor

Effect of anti-inflammatory supplementation with whey peptide and exercise therapy in patients with COPD

SummaryBackgroundOne of the major pathophysiologies in advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been attributed to systemic inflammation. Meta-analysis of the 2005 Cochrane Database concluded the effect of nutritional supplementation alone on stable COPD was insufficient to promote body weight gain or exercise capacity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of nutritional supplementation therapy using a nutritional supplement containing whey peptide with low-intensity exercise therapy in stable elderly patients with COPD.MethodIn stable elderly COPD patients with %IBW and %FEV1 of less than 110 and 80%, respectively, anti-inflammatory nutritional supplementation therapy was added to low-intensity exercise therapy. Thirty-six COPD patients were divided into those with and those without the ingestion of an anti-inflammatory nutritional supplement containing whey peptide, which exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect. These two groups were designated as the nutritional support and the control groups, respectively. The body composition, skeletal muscle strength, exercise tolerance, health-related QOL (HRQOL), and inflammatory cytokines were evaluated before and three months after nutritional support combined with exercise therapy in both the nutritional support group and the control group.ResultsIn the nutritional support group, the body weight, %IBW, FM, energy intake, %AC, Alb, PImax, PEmax, 6MWD, WBI, emotional function, and CRQ total were significantly increased, and the levels of hsCRP, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were reduced significantly, while no significant change was noted in any item of physiological evaluation or any biomarker in the control group.ConclusionConcomitant use of a anti-inflammatory nutritional supplement containing whey peptide, which exhibits an anti-inflammatory effect, with exercise therapy in stable elderly COPD patients with %IBW<110% and %FEV1<80% may not only increase body weight but may also inhibit systemic inflammation and thus improve exercise tolerance and HRQOL

Triple‐crystal x‐ray diffraction analysis of reactive ion etched gallium arsenide

This is the published version. Copyright 1994 American Institute of PhysicsThe effect of BCl3 reactive ion etching on the structural perfection of GaAs has been studied with diffuse x‐ray scattering measurementsconducted by high‐resolution triple‐crystal x‐ray diffraction. While using a symmetric 004 diffraction geometry revealed no discernible differences between etched and unetched samples, using the more surface‐sensitive and highly asymmetric 113 reflection revealed that the reactive ion etched samples etched displayed less diffusely scattered intensity than unetched samples, indicating a higher level of structural perfection. Increasing the reaction ion etch bias voltage was found to result in decreased diffuse scattering initially, until an apparent threshold voltage was reached, after which no further structural improvement was observed. Furthermore, we have shown that this reduction in process‐induced surfacestructural damage is not due merely to the removal of residual chemical‐mechanical polishing damage
