Diversity strengthens competing teams
How does the composition of a collection of individuals affect its outcome in competition with other collections of individuals? Assuming that individuals can be different, we develop a model to interpolate between individual-level interactions and collective-level consequences. Rooted in theoretical mathematics, the model is not constrained to any specific context. Potential applications include research, education, sports, politics, ecology, agriculture, algorithms and finance. Our first main contribution is a game theoretic model that interpolates between the internal composition of an ensemble of individuals and the repercussions for the ensemble as a whole in competition with others. The second main contribution is the rigorous identification of all equilibrium points and strategies. These equilibria suggest a mechanistic underpinning for biological and physical systems to tend towards increasing diversity due to the strength it imparts to the system in competition with others.Peer reviewe

Structure of glassy lithium sulfate films sputtered in nitrogen (LISON): Insight from Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations
Raman spectra of thin solid electrolyte films obtained by sputtering a
lithium sulfate target in nitrogen plasma are measured and compared to ab
initio electronic structure calculations for clusters composed of 28 atoms.
Agreement between measured and calculated spectra is obtained when oxygen atoms
are replaced by nitrogen atoms and when the nitrogen atoms form bonds with each
other. This suggests that the incorporation of nitrogen during the sputtering
process leads to structures in the film, which prevent crystallization of these
thin film salt glasses.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Polarized Neutron Laue Diffraction on a Crystal Containing Dynamically Polarized Proton Spins
We report on a polarized-neutron Laue diffraction experiment on a single
crystal of neodynium doped lanthanum magnesium nitrate hydrate containing
polarized proton spins. By using dynamic nuclear polarization to polarize the
proton spins, we demonstrate that the intensities of the Bragg peaks can be
enhanced or diminished significantly, whilst the incoherent background, due to
proton spin disorder, is reduced. It follows that the method offers unique
possibilities to tune continuously the contrast of the Bragg reflections and
thereby represents a new tool for increasing substantially the signal-to-noise
ratio in neutron diffraction patterns of hydrogenous matter.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Higher-capacity communication links based on two-mode phase-sensitive amplifiers
Optical communication links are usually made with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, which amplify the signal waves in a phase-insensitive (PI) manner. They can also be made with parametric fiber amplifiers, in which the signal waves interact with idler waves. If information is transmitted using only the signals, parametric amplifiers are PI and their noise figures are comparable to those of erbium amplifiers. However, transmitting correlated information in the signals and idlers, or copying the signals prior to transmission, allows parametric amplifiers to be phase-sensitive (PS), which lowers their noise figures. The information capacities of two-mode PS links exceed those of the corresponding PI links by 2 b/s-Hz
The Distribution of Redshifts in New Samples of Quasi-stellar Objects
Two new samples of QSOs have been constructed from recent surveys to test the
hypothesis that the redshift distribution of bright QSOs is periodic in
. The first of these comprises 57 different redshifts among all
known close pairs or multiple QSOs, with image separations 10\arcsec,
and the second consists of 39 QSOs selected through their X-ray emission and
their proximity to bright comparatively nearby active galaxies. The redshift
distributions of the samples are found to exhibit distinct peaks with a
periodic separation of in identical to that claimed
in earlier samples but now extended out to higher redshift peaks and 4.47, predicted by the formula but never seen before. The periodicity
is also seen in a third sample, the 78 QSOs of the 3C and 3CR catalogues. It is
present in these three datasets at an overall significance level -
, and appears not to be explicable by spectroscopic or similar
