    Sports Dentistry and Dental Traumatology- A Review

    Dental traumatology is a major connecting link between sports and dentistry. Sporting activities have become a huge integral part for those people who want to get involved in recreational activities. Dentistry plays a key role in handling oral and maxillofacial injuries which arise due to any sports activity. Sports dentistry is actually associated with prevention of injuries of oral and maxillofacial region and specific oral diseases in this particular area and its manifestations. Over the years, various preventive measures have become a significant part of sports dentistry which includes the use of mouthguard and dietary counselling. A sports team dentist, who plays a huge part in the diagnosis, management and prevention of injuries and diseases in sports-persons is also a great need in schools and colleges. In this review, we discuss the relationship of sports and dental diseases and how the parents and teachers are becoming an important factor in prevention of sports related injuries

    A study on awareness of Dental students in Electronic Waste Management

    Background: Electronic Waste or e-waste is one of the rapidly growing problems in the world. The old electronic appliances such as computers, laptops, TVs, DVD players and mobile phones etc which have disposed by their users come in this category. The presence of hazardous chemicals in electronic products is severely compromising human health and the Environment. This study was conducted with the aim to assess the awareness of Dental students in ewaste management. Materials and Method: A cross-section study was carried out in the month of January, 2017 among third year, final year students and interns of Swami Devi Dyal Hospital and Dental College, Panchkula. The E-Waste Management Awareness Inventory (EWMAI) was used to check the awareness of students regarding management of e-waste. All data analysis was done using the statistical package of social sciences 17.0 software (SPSS Inc; Chicago IL). Chisquare test was applied to test the association between variables. All reported probability values are based on two-sided tests and compared to a significance level of 5%.Results: A total of 100 students participated in the cross-sectional survey. The study sample consisted of 65 female and 35 male students. Only 37% of the males and 46% of females know about the formal e-waste collection services.10% of the males and 16% of females have knowledge on e-waste government policy. Conclusion: There is a need for increased public awareness through health education on hazards and handling of e-waste management along with strict legislations by the government

    Association of occupational stress factors on nicotine dependence among patients visiting dental care unit of Indo-Tibetian border police force station in India

    Background. Tobacco use is the foremost preventable cause of death and disease in the world today and work strain might be related with nicotine dependence by its provoking effect. Objective. To assess the association between occupational stress and nicotine dependence. Material and methods. A cross sectional survey was conducted among 200 subjects visiting a satellite dental clinic of Swami Devi Dyal Hospital and Dental College, Barwala, Panchkula, India. Nicotine dependence was measured using the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). The extent of the stress factors experienced at work was assessed using the Effort-Reward Imbalance scale (ERI). Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were employed for statistical analysis. Confidence level and level of significance were set at 95% and 5% respectively. Results. The results of bivariate analysis revealed association of occupational stress with age, marital status, educational status, level of nicotine dependence, frequency of cigarette smoking and religious attendance. However, multivariate analysis elicited the significant association of occupational stress with only two variables, level of nicotine dependence and frequency of smoking. Conclusion. Occupational stress was found to be associated with nicotine dependence in the present study implying a need of other tranquil measures to be incorporated for the relief of work related stress
