In Vitro Evaluation of Apricot Cultivars Response to Pseudomonas syringae Pathovars: Image Processing as an Alternative Method
Türkiye, with an apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) production amount of 833,398 tons per year, ranks first in fresh apricot production and dried apricot export in the world. Malatya, Iğdır, and Elazığ constitute the main apricot production centers in Turkey. Many table and dried apricot cultivars have been grown in Türkiye. Local apricot cultivars such as cv. Şalak (or Aprikoz), cv. Tebereze, cv. Ordubat, cv. Ağcanabat, and cv. Ağerik are widely grown in the Aras Valley, including Iğdır and Kağızman. In this study, DNA barcoding of local cultivars based on the ITS region was performed and their distribution demonstrated in the Aras Valley. The reactions of these apricot cultivars to the causal agents of bacterial canker, which negatively affect the yield and quality of apricot cultivation, were also determined. Alternative methods such as image-processing technology and CHAID analysis have also been successfully used for cultivar reaction tests. It was determined that "Şalak" is economically important and the most common apricot cultivar in the Aras Valley. In addition, the Ağcanabat cultivar was sensitive to the causal agents of disease, while other local apricot cultivars were tolerant to it
Determination and monitoring of body weight in animal husbandry are of
great importance in terms of profitability, early diagnosis of diseases, saving the
amount of drugs used. However, the majority of farms do not weigh livestock for
reasons most farms do not have a scale or, even if they do, the weighing is time
consuming, laborious, and can cause stress on animals. In recent years, various
estimation methods have been developed to determine the live weights of animals
by using body measurements in order to prevent negativity from classical weighing
methods. Although these methods take less time compared to weighing, stress
formation in animals and injuring human cannot be prevented. In this study, an
image processing and machine learning-based method is proposed to estimate body
weight as an alternative to these traditional methods. For this purpose, the body
weights of cattle were estimated by using their three-dimensional depth view taken
with a fixed camera positioned at a height of 2.65m from the ground without
disturbing the animals. Since all cattle were not at the same camera shooting angle,
their body weight could not be predicted automatically, but approximately 10
images were taken from each cattle and after the appropriate ones were selected and
filed, the dorsal areas of the cattle were automatically calculated from the images
in this folder. In addition, cattle heights values were also estimated using the depth
image were used as inputs (independent variables) in the methods. It is aimed to
gain a new perspective to the literature by image processing method in which cattle
heights are estimated using depth view. In the study, the artificial neural networks
approach used in machine learning was examined in detail, and many training
combinations were tried in ANN. In addition to ANN, live weights of cattle were
estimated with MARS and CHAID methods, which are new to used in animal husbandry, and the findings are presented to the reader within the scope of the thesis
to give an idea. Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values of approach were
defined as 4.15, 4.75, and 5.36% in the body weight estimations by using Artificial
Neural Network (ANN), Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and
Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) methods, respectively. The
R2 values of the estimates by each approach were 0.9467, 0.9334, and 0.9211, and
the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values were 31.63, 32.95, and 38.42kg
respectively. MAPE, R2 and RMSE values were found to be 5.02%, 0.9266 and
37.06 kg, respectively, with the multiple linear regression (MLR) method, which is
more frequently used in animal husbandry. During the experimental studies in
artificial neural networks, 972 artificial neural network trainings were carried out
using different parameter values. In addition to Levenberg-Marquardt (LM),
Bayesian Regularization (BR) and Gradient Descent with Adaptive Learning Rate
(GDX) algorithms which are among the learning algorithms used in ANN were
compared in terms of error reduction and the lowest MAPE value (4.56%) on
average was obtained from LM algorithm with 2-8-8-1 network architecture
training. The results of the study show that body weight of cattle can be predicted
successfully by machine learning and image processing method
IDENTIFICATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF NATIVE WALNUT GENOTYPES PECULIAR TO DARENDE DISTRICT OF MALATYA PROVINCE: USE OF FACTOR ANALYSIS SCORES IN MULTIPLE LINEAR REGRESSION
WOS: 000392920900009Two main aims of this investigation were to predict kernel ratio (KR) and kernel weight (KW) from some walnut characteristics, respectively. For these aims, a total of 112 Walnut genotypes growing in nature were collected at Darende District of Malatya province in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkiye. The walnut characteristics evaluated were nut length (NL), nut width (NW), nut height (NH), nut weight (NWe), shell thickness (ST), kernel ratio (KR) and kernel weight (KW), respectively. Independent variables were subjected to factor analysis based on principal component extraction method and VARIMAX rotation. On the basis of jointly using factor scores in multiple regression, KR (81.3 % R-2 and 80.6 % adjusted R-2) and KW (94.7% R-2 and 94.5% adjusted R-2) characteristics were predicted by using four factor scores with a big accuracy without multicollinearity problem. Consequently, the present results revealed that, walnuts of heavier KW and NWe in the prediction of KR would be expected to produce those of higher KR, and walnuts of higher values in NH, NW, NWe, ST, NL, and KR in the prediction of KW would be expected to produce those of heavier KW. The knowledge may help walnut breeders to improve new selection strategies
Electrophysiologic vestibular evaluation in type 2 diabetic and prediabetic patients: Air conduction ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials
Objective: Chronically increased blood glucose levels may affect the vestibular system by damaging cells and neural structures in diabetes mellitus (DM). We aimed to search the effects of neurovascular degeneration on the vestibular system in type 2 DM and prediabetic patients by using air-conducted ocular (oVEMP) and cervical (cVEMP) vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. Design: Prospective study. Study sample: Thirty diabetic, 30 prediabetic patients, and 31 age-and sex-matched controls having no peripheral or central vestibular disease, were enrolled. All participants were evaluated by audiovestibular tests, oVEMP, and cVEMP. Results: In the diabetic group, mean values of both oVEMP and cVEMP p1, n1 latencies were significantly longer compared to the prediabetic group and the control group, whereas latencies were similar in prediabetic and the control groups. Bilateral neural dysfunction was recognized in both tests and lateralization was not seen in VEMP asymmetric ratios. In the diabetic group, prevalence of pathological p1 and n1 latencies in oVEMP were 30.4% and 37.5%, whereas they were 53.7%, 59.3% in cVEMP, respectively. p1 latencies of cVEMP and oVEMP were positively correlated with HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose level in the diabetic group. Conclusion: Subclinical vestibular neuropathy can be a newly defined diabetes-related complication
Best Practice Recommendations for Geriatric Dysphagia Management with 5 Ws and 1H
Background: Dysphagia is a geriatric syndrome. Changes in the whole body that occur with aging also affect swallowing functions and cause presbyphagia. This condition may progress to oropharyngeal and/or esophageal dysphagia in the presence of secondary causes that increase in incidence with aging. However, no study has been published that provides recommendations for use in clinical practice that addresses in detail all aspects of the management of dysphagia in geriatric individuals. This study aimed to answer almost all potential questions and problems in the management of geriatric dysphagia in clinical practice. Methods: A multidisciplinary team created this recommendation guide using the seven-step and three-round modified Delphi method via e-mail. The study included 39 experts from 29 centers in 14 cities. Results: Based on the 5W and 1H method, we developed 216 detailed recommendations for older adults from the perspective of different disciplines dealing with older people. Conclusion: This consensus-based recommendation is a useful guide to address practical clinical questions in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and follow-up for the management of geriatric dysphagia and also contains detailed commentary on these issues
